Guys, your getting me too excited.... I have to wait another week and half for the one in new york. Does anyone know where on 34th street is the Manhattan center? Funny thing is I work on 30th and 7th and haven't any clue where. What do I need to bring, just an id or do i need any print out or email

You need to bring your student ID. Alot of people were turned away because they didnt have a school I.D.

Hey Boogak, it seems like it'll held at Erwin Center on the UT campus which is on I-35 and Red River. You can't miss it. Its the big tan concrete doggie dish-like structure and it has an active -matrix screen right next to it. I probably know as much as you about parking.

If anyone has a copy of Visual Studio .NET that they don't want/need, let me know I'm a Computer Info Systems major and was scheduled to go to the one at Miami U in Ohio, but I had class last night so I couldn't make it (plus I wouldn't have gotten back up to Cleveland till real late).

I went to the UCLA VS.NET Launch event. It was pretty cool, it's not all that boring. The demo presentation portion was pretty neat. The guy types EXTREMELY fast, and programs just as fast. But overall, free food, free vs.net, free winxp pro. They let you take the left over bags in the end. I got three, 2 for my friends back at the dorms. Well hope everyone has a good time at their events.

i just went to ebay and searched for Visual Studio NET and about 50 things came up almost all of them selling the same academic copies we got at the launch. Damn some people are actually paying like $200 for them too! I should've snagged another bag while i was at ucla!

The Academic Visual Studio .NET has a retail price of $99.00, I don't understand why people would pay so much for it on E-bay. It is usually pretty easy to get academic copies of software. There are some websites that just ASK if you are a student before you can make a purchase. Some of these people need to get a little more imagination.

Doesn't it bother you guys that M$ is trying to get the new CS students using M$ development tools as soon as possible? You know there are Open Source development products like gcc and others.

well , when i was a first year student here at ucla, they gave us all full visual studio 6.0 pro edition, retail box . i kid you not. later on they switched to academic. I made a bunch of money buying them off people, since we only needed visual C++ for the class, and well they sell that at the studnet store for $30 so why not sell the visual studio. After the school dean called me into the office and 4 more meetings with them, i was finally told that i didn nothing wrong since i signed nothing, and that i explained to them that visual studio was not a required class material. they tried to say it was class material. ANyways the next year because of me you had to sign a waiver to get your visual studio and not sell it. I still dont know who ratted me out, not that i was doing anything wrong, but i felt like i was being ratted out.

Anyways, i dont mind microsoft giving me stuff and trying to woo me over. Whydoesnt the linux community give me stuff. Oh yeah i remember now its free. Yes i've used gcc probably far more than visual studio in the last 2 years or so. Gcc is a good compiler. pico is a half decent text editor. They dont compare at all to visual studio though. Microsoft makes good products. they try to endear themselves to future software engineers. nothing wrong with that, imean if they were giving us crappy software we wouldnt use it, but their software is GOOD. which means they are giving us software we would want to use but just cant afford right now, and our employers will pay in the future so its just giving us a head start. Until someone can do a better job, then microsoft makes the best programming IDE for me (codewarrior sucks ass too).

Yeah, about 3 years ago, they gave away Visual Studio 6.0 Pro at universities. Mine actually came with a sticker on the plastic wraping that said academic. But in order to open it, you had to take off the plastic, and bang, its a regular VS 6.0 Pro.... It even cam with a MSDN subscription for one year.

Sold it on ebay last year for more than $350. Worked out nicely.

Got back from the one at Temple U. in Philadelphia, they gave you the software the second you walked in. People were getting their bag and leaving. They had some really good food there, but I didn't win any prizes :frown:

the one i went to tonight was very strict. they were not letting anyone in without student ID, i saw several people turned away, some waitlist people got in. Also you could not "grab another bag" here. I got what i was after, was worth the drive. band and food was good, first rate

BTW, the MS big day thing sucks ass, dont waste your time

Yeah, I got a confirmation from vslaunch@msdnaa.net a few seconds after submitting. Are you sure you used the correct Email address? If not, as long as you got your name right, I think they'll let you in.

Just got back from the one on Portland... Twice during the presentation one of the three huge TVs displaying their powerpoint presentation switched to a MAC OS desktop! It was hilarious! The first time it was before the thing had gotten going - but the second one was right in the middle of it. The Microsoft guy couldn't help but address it... saying something like, "Could somebody please get rid of the MAC desktop?"

LOL!

Wish I had a camera... it would be like the infamous BSOD during Bill Gates' intro of Windows 98.

Cool,
Another anandtecher went to the Portland event. He he. Well I used to work on the Hi-tech team that provides technical support for the facility. Personally I think the equipment they have there is pretty decent. Only thing is that nobody is ever really in charge of the system. It just causes all the systems to work but, in a really mickey mouse fashion. The system there just got upgraded this winter break. I mean good idea and about time but, there are so many bugs to be worked out still. Ya but, that was kind of funny hmmm Mac and MS. Now if they could of set up chairs.
