Microsoft wants to force Windows 10 Mail users to use Edge for email links

Microsoft is testing a new change to its future version of Windows 10 which will probably annoy anyone using the operating system. The software giant revealed today that “we will begin testing a change where links clicked on within the Windows Mail app will open in Microsoft Edge.” The change means if you have Chrome or Firefox set as your default browser in Windows 10, Microsoft will simply ignore that and force you into Edge when you click a link within the Mail app.

I don't have to worry about this because I use Outlook on the web and not the Mail app. MS pissing off more users.

I'm all for stopping the encroaching domination of Google Chrome. But this just strikes me as a terrible idea.

In the era of walled gardens, this seems like more of the same, and it's familiar territory for Microsoft. A little too familiar TBH, I'm a bit surprised by the fact that they didn't think twice after the antitrust verdicts. I guess we'll see more of the same until some major turning point (hopefully) occurs.

Does it matter? I don't use Windows Mail and don't use Edge.

Edge can't even open some PDF files properly and there is no way to fix it.

Isn't this a violation of something they agreed upon in the DOJ Consent Decree? That they would "open" Windows, and allow users to choose which applications they wanted to use for various functionality, thus creating the "Programs and Features" stuff (I think that's it).

No, they are no longer subject to a 17 year old settlement. Lol, that thing expired like 10 years ago.

It does seem like a hacker invitation though - hey if MS can ignore their own default program settings in 10, why can't we? Who knows, maybe they already are!

I hate edge even more than chrome.
