Ok, I have the a8n-sli deluxe, latest official bios. AMD x2 3800+, win xp pro w/sp2 slipstreamed. All current updates, latest forceware for my bfg 7800gt, latest nvidia nforce4 drivers. I do not install the firewall or ide drivers.

System runs fine, then I install the hotfix which I received from them this evening...

Reboot, about halfway through the winows startup wav file, it stops, screen goes black, then for about 1/2 second I see a BSOD. Something about logon.. so quick I really can't see more . System reboots on its own, boots up just fine this time. Everything functions fine. I did also do the registry edit they outline.

Every few system restarts (Im installing things and thus the reboots..) it will do this, maybe 50% of the time.

Anyone out there getting BSOD's about LOGON something after applying the hotfix?

Yes, that's the one they sent me.. I just went that way so I could try to get the latest version or the like.. Mine is dated 12/21..

Yes, created that key and gave it that value..

What I'm wondering is if there is a certain order I should apply it?

I went xp install -> nforce drivers, amd dual core driver, windows update, display drivers, hotfix..

What is baffling me is it is not an every reboot kind of thing. If I remove it, the problem goes away, but I get stuttering in NFS:MW. Haven't installed Q4 or COD2 with their dual processor patches yet.

I'll uncheck the restart option and post the error msg back here in the morning.

Right click on My Computer->Manage->Event Viewer. You might find helpful troubleshooting information in the log files.

ok, I'm back. I've tried reinstalling XP, different install orders of the drivers, etc.. here is the error, it comes up during the intro .wav music at the beginning.

This is XP pro sp2 slipstreamed, fully updated. Other than this the system runs flawlessly. I've tried a fresh install, install the dual core AMD driver, then the hotfix with the registry entry, and no windows update, same results. I've also tried both with and without .net 1.1 or 2.0 installed.

i got a similar problem with an A8N-E board (very similar to yours except no sli). Are you sure you have the LATEST bios version and chipset driver (final version for bios, no betas), if you are, this is the order of installation i did to fix the problem:

1. Fresh installation of Windows Xp
2. Install XP SP2
3. Install Nvidia chipset driver (skipped ide, nam, and the audio driver--used the realtek driver)
4. Install AMD Driver, Reboot
5. Install MS Hotfix, Reboot
6. Apply MS Hotfix Reg entry, Reboot
7. Install Video card driver

btw, when i was building my system, i noticed that i got a bad SATA cable, would randomly cause crashes, reboots, BSOD, and disk errors...maybe try switching the SATA cable with the other spares you have.

I agree with this StumbleBum1. Try running Memtest overnight and see if you get any errors.

I'll give this a try tonight what test(s) do you recommend? One thing though, it's not every boot up, maybe ever other or every third one..

To anyone still reading, yes the problem was fixed, it was an older revision of the MS hotfix. I got another dated last week and the problem solved itself. Never actually thought it was the board itself.

Ok, I ran for awhile w/o the hotfix, and dealt with setting affinity to certain games that required it.
So I broke down and installed the "hotfix" from MS, and now, my CS:S steadily crashes the whole PC, no matter which core or both I set it to run on.
before, w/o HF, I could set affinity and run all night w/o troubles. Now, it might run 2 hrs, or 10 mins, but WILL crash, on any setting of core used.
I used the registry entry for disabling it, to no avail.
Now, I'm about to reinstall WinXP to remove this crap of a "hot"fix".
I really wish MS would build something right, and not have to constantly create "fixes" for something, if they do more trouble than good.
I went back and tried 12 different vid drivers (even to 66.93, 77.77, etc w/o dual core enhance) to see if it was a Dual Core driver enhancement that might have been causing this.
Also, reinstalled Steam/CS:S, to be sure.
I will not install this MS HF again.

I got one driving game: NFSMW Black ed. and love it!
And also Jedi Knights Acad. and Prince of Persia which I haven't played in a while.
But yeah, I guess $500 in FPS makes me a fanatic.

(sorry for hijackin' ya post, I'll stop here)

For the record. The Cool 'N Quiet drivers tend to conflict with something in Windows. May have something to do with that fix. I got that same problem too (with the BSOD and everything). With the Cool 'N Quiet driver uninstalled, it appeared to work with no problems.

Could I apply this hotfix if I swap CPU's a lot from dual core to single core and back?? would I need to un-install anything or would it run fine with a single core CPU installed?

I think you would just need to disable it in the registry when you put in a single core CPU.

quote from MS site: "Note This solution favors performance gains over power savings. Although benchmark performance scores may improve, battery life could be negatively affected. Accordingly, this kernel policy change may be disabled by a registry key to allow for maximum flexibility.
How to disable the new performance state policy behavior
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk."

does this mean that the hotfix works without the reg entry and that you should only enter it if you want yo save battery life?

As I understand it the registry entry as entered on the microsoft website with the hex key set to 0 disables the hotfix, whereas set to 1 enables it. It seems to provide the benefits before you add the key however so I would assume that without any key in the registry concerning it that the default behavoir is to initiate the fixes, though I could be wrong. In my case the two applications that crashed due to thread migration ceased crashing before I added the registry key.

If anyone else could verify this it would be great.
