I should clarify, I select off letting the application set the vsync, which is actually on in a couple of my games. Same with my anisotropic and anti-aliasing. In games I just crank those settings to their max and let 'er rip.

I had two 4850's and two 5850's in Crossfire, I never had microstudder even once.

When I had a 4870X2 it was terrible, nothing I tried got rid of it and every game I had did it.

completely forgot about my 3870x2 and 4870x2. none of which ever showed any microstutter issues

Never noticed it with my 4870x2, so far so good with 6950 CF.

This is at 1920x1080, i7 920 system running everything from Crysis to Batman: AA to Mass Effect 1-2, Drakensang, Dragon Age, Just Cause 2, Oblivion modded to hell...

To be fair I've rarely played anything that didn't run extremely smoothly already (never tried Crysis or Warhead on the 4870x2, waited for 6950s for example) so maybe it was just less pronounced.

Fingers crossed though that it never shows up, or that I don't notice if it does.

i notice Micro-stutter with every series of card from HD 2900 CF to HD 6970 CrossFire and with GTX 480 and 580 SLI. It is inherent to AFR.
:\

Either you notice it and ignore it or it bothers you. In some cases, it is irritating beyond belief to me and i cannot play multi-GPU with certain games. In most cases, it works really well and i much prefer the overall experience with it to without.

Never noticed it on my 9800GX2, 4870 Tri Fire, 5970, and my current 6970 crossfire setup.

hahahh, that means your gonna test it? i doubt it
What's funny? Do we know each other?
:\

i have been testing it for years. That is the easy part. Demonstrating MS to others is the issue. Even using my HD-HR 1080p camcorder, it is difficult to see the differences side-by-side and often the distortion may be arguably attributed to other factors besides MS.

Simply posting Fraps charts and graphs for an article is also pretty useless and it does not always translate to what you are seeing in-game.

Rendering graphics is as much art as science and it is all a compromise. i prefer using multi-GPU to single GPU for playing games with high details/filtering and maxed out on a 2560x1600 30" display - in most cases.

If memory serves me, if you can maintain an average fps (and lowest) above your monitors refresh rate then it is probably un-noticeable. If your constantly dipping below that rate, then your experiencing it more. A system like mine usually keeps me above 60 fps constantly, but if I were pushing a higher resolution it might become more noticeable. I suppose it could be tested by lowering one's resolution and turning settings down to lowest quality and trying to quantify the stutter at different average fps rates. This would be purely subjective, but might help one understand the issue on their personal system.

Where do i know you from?
:awe:

You may get your review. i am publishing Part one of "SLI vs. CF" tonight or tomorrow. It will touch on MS, but primarily it is showing multi-GPU scaling and especially midrange GPUs (HD 6870/5870 CrossFire & GTS 450/GTX 450/560 SLi) versus the top single cards (HD 6970/6950 and GTX 580/570/480). Part two continues where Part 1 leaves off and explores the more powerful cards in Multi-GPU and CPU scaling.

Then we'll probably get some new cards for Part 3; and maybe Part 4 will cover microstutter. i am going to ask for suggestions on my own forum to set up parameters for testing it.

Single 5870 right now. I ran a few benches, and took some power readings (my entire rig uses about what a GTX480 uses by itself ). I'm swappking everything over to a new case and adding a second 5870... I'll report back in an hour or two if everything goes smoothly... that's a big 'if'.

i have a 5970 and 5870 in tri fire with a e8600 at 5ghz. I don't really notice the microstuttering with new ati drivers. There was a time where it was quite obvious in certain benchmarks like heaven, and just cause 2 was REALLY BAD micro stutter at first. AMD somehow have sync'd things up since then. I'm waiting to upgrade to sandy when it comes back out to see what that looks like at 5ghz. Should unlock much of the bottlenecks i have right now. Even the 5970 by itself was bottlenecked in many titles. Adding another 5870 didn't help that. Trifire doesn't have any more stuttering then crossfire if it's worth adding to the discussion. New games run smooth as butter like Deadspace 2. 200+ fps avg maxed out 1920x1200. I think i noticed a little extra stutter in games that were already stutter prone when aa was set at 8x-32x. For settings i always play with vsync off as 5970 has mouse curser problems in games with vsync enabled (all valve games). I also use 16xAf in everything.

how about you testing this phenomenon?

That is like Christians saying "prove that Jesus did NOT exist or STFU"... Its their way of asserting that Jesus was real.

Is there a way to accurately measure the time it takes to render a frame?

Just got crossfire going on my rig and don't notice any microstudder using 11.2 drivers.

Really impressed with crossfire so far..... after hearing all the bad experiences.

Have faith, microstutter is real! Besides, I've never heard anyone argue Jesus existed by stating you can't prove he didn't. It's the worst analogy I've ever seen.

6870 CF. Game at 1680x1050 at max settings

Only experienced microstutter in Stalker Call of Priypat

I should probably add that Stalker COP in general runs like crap and has even crashed a couple of times. I'm inclined to blame the game since every other app runs flawlessly on my rig.

I'd have to concur with this sentiment

2 x GTX 470s, used to drive either a 2560x1440 U2711 or a 120Hz 1920x1080 XL2410T.

I really wish there was a single GPU solution that could appease my thirst but I don't see that happening any time soon
