There is something, I think it's pea soup, that says to put it in the microwave for 10 minutes. I always think that's insane and never trust it, I put it in for 2 and the soup is very hot even after that. I find on some products the directions can be WAY off. Maybe if it was frozen at absolute zero when you took it out of the freezer then those directions would apply.

maybe these directions were from when microwaves just came out and have never been updated? aren't they much more powerful ovens now?

I think companies that make products like this and the one in OP do their testing in Tibet.

I've seen folks like this. The only way they know how to prepare food is to stick it in the microwave or take out of a package. Sad, really.

My napkin math says that a 1000W microwave should be able to heat 2.5 cups of water to OVER 680 DEGREES CELSIUS in 28 minutes.

I conclude your rice has undergone nuclear fission.

I see you posted the directions which did save your ass from some ridicule.
But, never ever ever have I seen directions that length for microwaving something like that.

I would have realized this and not cooked it that long, but I guess you aren't much of a cook and just took the directions verbatim.
Send pics to the company. Profit?

EVERY rice dish i have seen calls for 20-28 min cooking in a microwave. he was right on the time. sending in pics would get alaugh since he used the wrong size bowl.

i just don't see the point of useing a microwave for rice. it does not take long on the stove top.

Hmmmm.... if I cooked that in any size dish in my microwave for that amount of time it would boil over terribly.

no it wouldn't he used a dish half the size he should have. that was one of the problems.

if he would have used the proper size dish it wouldn't have boiled over.

1. pour 2 cups of uncooked rice into medium pot (6 qt pot should suffice)
2. pour 4 cups of water into pot
3. turn burner on high and put pot on top of burner
4. bring to boil
5. turn heat all the way down and set timer for 20 minutes
6. after timer goes off, turn burner off
7. enjoy hot rice

prep time: 1 minute
cook time: boil time + 20 minutes

note: this will make a LOT of rice. i like to just spoon the rice out of the pot onto my dishes. after the pot has cooled off i leave it on the stove covered if i intend to finish the contents before the end of the next day. otherwise, i put the cooled off pot in the fridge.

Yea, but all the ones I've seen call for 50% power at 20+ minutes

My point is IF he had fallowed the directions it wouldn't boiled over. in this case the OP used a bowl half the size it says to use. IF he had it at the right power setting and time it wouldn't have boiled over.

The microwave is perfectly fine for cooking rice. Anyone who believes otherwise is just being dumb. Whenever we don't feel like using the rice cooker, we use something similar to this. Add rice, double the water, and 12 minutes later, have hot delicious rice!

We don't generally eat rice in our house, but as I posted earlier, we DO cook rice to feed to our dogs. It's the closest to "people food" that they get. (and is vet approved)
Microwave cooking for rice is simple and turns out every time. (as long as you follow the very simple directions)

twice as much water as rice, put in a bowl that has at least twice the capacity of the amount you're cooking, soak for 10 minutes, microwave on high for 12-13 minutes.

I wish they wouldn't put power levels on microwave ovens, it is deceptive. Majority 99% of microwaves have two levels, on and off. All the power level does is toggle the on/off of the magnetron every few seconds.

No. You put the rice in the flimsy lean cuisine plastic container from last night, fill water to top and microwave on high for 28 minutes.

:hmm: For some reason, I suspect that might give less-than-desirable results...

This may be a stupid question... but is 50% at 20 minutes essentially the same as 100% at 10 minutes then?

The same amount of energy would be used, but faster heating means that heat will transfer through food less.. hence burnt outside and raw inside. Lower power will heat more evenly

sort of. The idea of the power level in most microwaves is that the food has time to cool down before it is heated again. So something heating for 1 minute at 50% would get heated for 5 seconds, cool for 5 seconds, heat for 5, cool for 5 , etc.

I guess a better analogy would be turning the stove top on high and placing a pan of food on the burner for 5 seconds then lifting it off for 5 seconds and repeating.

I have one of those, they are great when you travel.

I think being able to cook a passable meal (not frozen dinners) in a microwave is a pretty useful skill to have. You can get access to a microwave pretty easily in hotels so it's a good way to make cheap non-fast food when you travel. Not saying that you should cook all your meals in a microwave, but turning your nose at it is a bit short sighted imo.

But, never ever ever have I seen directions that length for microwaving something like that.

It didn't save him from ridicule, he used a 3.125 cup holder when it clearly said 2 quart. He's trying to defy the laws of physics! 28 min of cooking dry rice without room for water and without checking even once = super fail

Also, he's cooking long grain rice, not white rice. The time while it seems high is actually normal for that type of rice.

http://www.wikihow.com/Cook-Rice-in-a-Microwave

# Cover, place in the microwave and set the time. Here are some suggested guidelines for a 700 watt microwave and white rice:

* 1/2 cup rice, 9 minutes
* 3/4 cup rice, 12 minutes
* 1 cup rice, 16 minutes
* 1 1/4 cups rice, 20 minutes
* 1 1/2 cups rice, 23 minutes

For brown rice, start with three cups of boiling water per cup of rice and cook it for 25 minutes.[1] Adjust through trial and error.

It's also btw, another reason why cooking rice in a microwave is so much fail. It's actually better and more efficient on a stovetop.

There isn't anything that gets placed into the microwave for 28 minutes. This is impossible. Thawing meat in the microwave doesn't even take 10 minutes. In fact, it starts to cook at around 6 minutes.

You must have read the directions wrong.

You must have read this thread wrong. he posted a picture of the directions and they do indeed say 28 minutes.
