Might be a stupid question.. but is is possible to use different connections (calbe/adsl) to surf the net?

I know how to do it on cisco routers. So it can be done.
Called Policy routing. PM me for details if you are interested.
However, no clue on how to do it with anything else.

I tried this idea with Cable, and Modem.

I started the Cable in one Window of IE5.5, and opened a second Window of IE.

I started the Modem; the modem connection takes over both windows, and neutralized the Cable.

Though, I have two I.E running the Registry setting for IE is only one, and IE prefers the Modem.

Could be that if I installed Netscape, and assign it to work with the Modem, and IE to work with the cable it will work (but I am too lazy to try).

So if you install two NICs assigne one to The Cable, and one to the DSL.

Leave the DSL with the original Software, (mine came with Netscape), and PPPOE dialup.

Who knows??? May be it will work.

You could just load balance the two of them - Look at Fat Pipe Networks. They have a software router that will load balance on multiple connections.

You may want to also try WinGate... It will allow you to route different traffic over different adapters (NIC's). This may work, but I've never tried it.

Eww. Unless something has changed recently Wingate is a proxy and not a router. Very different functionality that's not compatible with a lot of non-browser-based apps. Not recommended with the likes of Winproxy and FatPipe available.

Definitly something you would have to do with 3rd party software, unless there is a new trick in WinXP (I played around with XP for awhile, didn`t see much about this type of situation). Win95,98,NT,2K does not have built-in support for load
balancing or designating certain traffic to a particular connection on a computer
with multiple broadband connections.

Hardware wise, this is quite possible, but no cheap.

Policy Routing on cisco routers refers to the ability to base routing decisions on factors
other than destination address.
The next hop can be set by source address, socket number, type of service tag or several
other parameters. This is a static service and is a PITA if you don't need the functionality.

If you are cisco command literate, its implimented with route maps.

On the interface its:

ip policy Route_map_name

General:

Route-map Route_map_name 10
match ip address 100
set ip next-hop x.x.x.x

Route-map Route_map_name 20
set ip next-hop y.y.y.y

access-list 100 permit tcp any any

This example will send all tcp packets to x.x.x.x, and the rest to y.y.y.y
