Might be in need of, X58, Triple kit

So I'm still running memory tests with my old Perfect Storm DDR3 2000MHz kit, and it seems to be fine one minute then the next it's failing Memtest HCI. Now, I'm jumping ahead and looking at some triple ram kits for my old X58 system. What would you recommend? And why?

Thanks

A little background: It's currently testing at 1914MHz CL9 @ 1.65v It's been about 20 minutes and all instances are beyond 100% I decided to run each instance at 512mb vs the last test which was 2047mb @ 2 instances with one instance at 832mb The last test failed, even at a lower MHz, 1802MHz CL9.

I believe I run a 6GB set of OCZ platinum (DDR3-1600) in my older X58 machine. There are many many routes you could go, including just trying to replace what you have.

Did you read the opening post? I'm pretty sure there was enough info in there that would suggest I'm looking for a new RAM kit

You should be able to buy individual sticks, x3. That is, if you do need to replace. As far as troubleshooting, have you tried other memory tests besides HCI?

Only been working with Memtest HCI and it WILL catch errors if the memory isn't working properly. I usually cross test with the Window Memory Diagnostics but that's all I have.

Looking at other RAM I sit back and wonder what is the fastest this X58 system will take? I see DDR3 is up to 3000MHz. Makes me wonder if this system can take that.

You could also try memtest86+, let it run for a while. As for memory speeds, I dont think X58 would take much more than 2000MHz, but it also depends on your chips memory controller as well as the motherboard.

Is memtest86+ still ran from a disc at boot-up?

It passed 300% on all 4x1024mb instances at 1002MHz CL10, 1.65v, even at 4.6GHz but I'll definitely try another ram test. It passes the Windows Memory Diagnostics, and the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Memory test

Yes, it is generally ran from a CD, or a USB device, or off of a NAS. But yes, you boot to it.

Well it looks like triple channel is the weak point. Kept failing different tests. Took a stick out, ran the memory at 2000MHz 8.8.8.21 2T @ 1.6v, .05 under spec, and the kit is working like a charm. It passed 10 iterations/loops of IBT @ 3072mb, > 200% on 3 instances of 1024mb usage with Memtest HCI, passed Windows mem diag (not judging it as a serious stability test) and I'm about to test Prime95. thanks to an idea i got reading reviews on new egg of all places.. guy said a 2133 CL11 kit would not work on his X58 system and that it might be due to the platform not being able to handle the speeds, and I suspected the IMC might be the issue so dual channel seems to be working great so far on this X58 system. Glad I finally get to use this kit at it's rated specs minus the 1.6v vs the 1.65v requirement.

Memory kit

edit: I hope I don't come back here and say my ram is failing, hah

Well upon a reinstall and all at default speeds I experienced a couple of system freezes that had to powered down from a hard shut down. Never did this before so I'm exiting my usage with these sticks. I'm considering just a single channel for my new memory kit. Either a 4gb or 8gb kit. I can't remember what games would consume more than 2gb of memory. I pay UT4, Rising Storm, CS:GO, and I'm considering the new DOOM. I know 8gb is a safe bet but if I don't need it then i'd rather not use it because I like finding if my system is stable sooner than waiting for 8gb to pass memory tests. But if a game would saturate 4gb then I'd go for 8. What games would use more than 4gb?

EDIT: is there a nanosecond difference between these two crucial sticks? One is a 4gb and the other is an 8gb i'm only doing single channel

4gb

The actual issue is usually the uncore becoming unstable, not the memory becoming unstable. Make sure your uncore is running at the lowest speed possible, which should be 1.5x the memory rate on 32nm cpus. The default uncore I think is 2.66ghz, so it means you are can get a maximum of ddr3 ~1800 without overclocking the uncore, as long as you select the lowest uncore multi.

I reduced the speeds of the CPU, and the ram speed down to 1067MHz, I opened up the timings pretty wide, cl9, while leaving the DIMM and VTT volts the same as when they did 2000MHz at CL8. I think in both instances I had the QPI at the lowest multi, and the uncore at the lowest.. Do you still think it was the Uncore becoming unstable? These memory chips were known to fail within a year, it's been 5yrs so far.

Oh, I was just saying that's the fastest type of ram you can get for x58. As for your issue, it could be the motherboard, cpu, or the memory stick. Also, 8gb dimms might not work on x58, I think it only accepts 4gb maximum, but I'm not sure.

Ah crap!

I think it's the dimms. I had this machine at 4.6GHz with a different kit at lower ram speeds and it was stable afaik

EDIT: found info on the 8gb dimms,
