guys,

I am looking for the best new keyboard out. It will be mainly for gaming but obviously normal use too. Since I built a nice new sleek black computer I thought it might make sense to get a color matching keyboard that is new. I have the greatest gaming keyboard ever though. AT&T RT101, circa 1995. NO annoying windows key. Best gaming keyboard ever...

So I just want a sweet keyboard that is black. A few extra buttons would be ok but nothing that interferes with gaming. I can handle a windows key though. I've mainly looked at the Logitechs, they look the best hands down. But I don't know which model you guys recommend as the best.

Also I'm not totally closed minded to a wireless keyboard. That is one less thing to hook have to crawl under my desk to hook up after a LAN party but the batteries thing, interference is very annoying and the main thing: lag is unacceptable. So if you guys could just give me the best recommendation on a keyboard. If you toss a corded and a wireless keyboard recommendation out i'll buy one of them.

If you need anymore information let me know.

THANK YOU,
Rhin0

When in search of a new keyboard, ALWAYS look to Logitech to provide a solid, reliable, long-lifed product. I've been using Logitech keyboards and mice for YEARS with not a single one going bad or giving me issues. I use them on at least two platforms and they simply work. I even include them with systems I build if the buyer doesn't already have a keyboard and/or mouse that they love and intend to use on the new system. Of all the ones that have gone out with system builds, not a single complaint/problem has reached my ears about them.

kinda cool and reliable typically cannot be found in the same product. Logitech makes rock solid keyboards and mice (been using them for years). In fact, if you look at older mice with the microsoft label on them, in your device manager it will most likely come up as a Logitech mouse.

The best keyboard ever made...

You're used to using your old AT&T model, so this will be right up your alley. These are extremely rare, as they are the only black model IBM ever made, but they're absolutely incredible. They use buckling spring key mechanisms (no mushy rubber membranes), are indestructible, and look incredible with a black PC/monitor/mouse setup (These are jet black, no "charcoal" half-grey looking colors here). They'll run you a bit more $$$ than the latest models from your favorite vendors, but they are well worth it. The cheapest I've seen them is $75-80 on ebay. I'd been wanting one forever, but I wasn't prepared to pay that much. Low and behold, I was cleaning out a cabinet in our office, and BANG... Two brand new ones, never removed from the boxes.

I <3 the wireless keyboard that comes with the Logitech LX700 system. I use that and the MX700. I play a lot of FFXI with them and have yet to notice any problems. I also haven't noticed problems playing FPS games like Doom3 and HL2.

"Windows key" == "Key of Instant Death and Lockups" in DOS games. In Windows/DirectX games, even if it doesn't lock the machine, it still tends to cause you to switch to the desktop when you least expect or want it, and get fragged in the meantime.

L@@K! RARE! LOL...

Yeah, that's the keyboard I use, I bought a spare one too, while I could. I don't think that they are exactly that rare, IBM makes a number of their keyboards in black, but I agree with the first sentiment, it very nearly is the "ultimate keyboard". The mfg sticker on the back of mine is different than the one linked, though. Mine was made in '97, and says "Made by Maxi-Switch for IBM Corp.". Also, the white printing on the keycaps is wearing off, apparently they are only painted-on on this one. (My older AST-branded keyboard, black, soft-touch, made by NMB, has keycaps in which the printing is actually embedded directly in the plastic. Those are the best, the only way that they would wear off, is if you wore the keycap all the way through, which likely won't happen in your lifetime.)

Sweet! I got mine from a dealer in the Cambridge area at the MIT flea for $40/ea or so. (They had cream-colored ones too, I should have picked up at least one of those, but I didn't have enough for two, so I bought another black one.) At one point, the same dealer was selling them over Ebay too, for around the same price. NIB too.

If you like the feel of laptop keys, you should try the Logitech Ultra X keyboard. It is a very quiet keyboard with a good feel. It also has good response. For the price it's a terrific value.

Another  for the Ultra X. Going on 1 year with mine.

I used to pop the Windows keys off my old keyboards, but now I find myself doing a LOT with the keyboard alone and the Windows keys make things much quicker.
