military guy needing some advice

Hello everyone,

I've been on deployment for 6 months and haven't kept up with all the new computer stuff for more than a year. I will be building a new comp and really need some help on what to get. I'd like to keep the price around $1600-$1800 (including a 19'' LCD), but more or less wouldn't really matter much. Primary use is video editing and gaming. I've done overclocking in the past so that's also a possibility.

Mobo, CPU, HD, RAM, Vid, Sound, Monitor, Dual layer DVD±RW, Power supply, Case, & Cooling

i say a sempron set up will do u nice.....u can OC like a mofo and wen the times right......step up to A64 (provided u go for the K8 based sempron 3100 on the socket 754 platform)

tho id imagine a lot off people are gonna tell u socket 939 and some form of winchester revision of the A64

Do you have any preference about AMD or Intel and do you mind waiting a couple of weeks to get a nforce4 boards for AMD?

Thanks everyone for the help. I really don't have a preference as far as AMD or Intel. Worked with both in the past before. If the payoff for the nforce4 boards is worth the wait, I'm willing to do that. Approximately how long though?

I really don't like the fact that the Antec cases are steel... seems like they would weigh a ton after everything is installed. Maybe I'm wrong though, hehe. If the case doesn't matter to you, then get the cheaper Antec cases that come with good PSU's.

Comes to...$1,212 with out shipping. This leaves you about $600-700 on a monitor. You can get a Dell 2001FP for $799 but with coupons the price comes to $599. Just ask around, I'm sure someone has a coupon they are willing to part with.

You are probably right about the Gainward. But it's a Golden Sample, so it's warrentied to overclock to Ultra speeds. I figure when you are playing games you can't hear the thing anyway, plus you get better performance. *shrugs*

By the way, people in the Cases &amp; Cooling board have said to use this Antec True Power PSU ($59.50) for quieter and stronger performance.
