Why does China need a big military? They are well on their way to dominating the world economically. Taiwan will be conquered without a shot, when in 30 years the U.S. economy will be dependent on Chinese loans to get us thru the Social Security crisis. The U.S. will have to stand aside as China imposes its will on Taiwan.
Not to mention that the U.S. technological lead will be a thing of the past way before that.
I love how the "China will own the US" myth still perpetuates itself. A glance at the foreign holdings of US public debt should be most enlightening. Furthermore the Chinese don't invent/develop advanced technologies, they have to buy or try to steal them from Japan/ Europe/United States where there is actual incentive to create them.
A large proportion of new debt is being acquired by the Chinese. And the only country with even the possibility of buying the huge new debt from the SS crisis is China.
And lets not forget that we used to laugh at Japanese imports. Now they are ahead of the U.S. technologically in many areas.
They can buy all the debt they want, Every dollar of debt they own is just one more reason to go to war with them. I assure you that if there was a war with china the first thing we would do is invalidate every bond china owns.
US bonds are obviously fungible, so you can't invalidate debt held by China alone. You should invalidate it all. That would turn the US in a third world country overnight, as every little American saver suddenly finds his savings in T-bills are now worth nothing.
