By not asking questions when I really don't have any, aren't I just demonstrating this?

With jobs of any real complexity there will always be a point where you need to recognize who, what, and how to ask a question. You will not/can't ever know everything

Maybe these people see the absolute idiocy of working for someone who will not allow them to take a phone call or text someone when they want to. Shocking, I know....

In every case I see people saying we were going to hire the guy (probably because he was smart enough to smell the stale corporate stench in the interview room) but then he dared to answer his phone in my presence. I mean what does that say about you and how pitifully you have bought into the corporate slavery scheme?

Smells like bait.

Are you saying there aren't job related events where you shouldn't answer your phone / texts?

Impressing people goes well beyond wearing nice clothes. People have cared less and less what people wear and look like (minus being unhygenic or crazy clothes) for years now. Nerds get full sleeve tattoos and shit. It's all about work experience, skills and personality.

To me it's not about impressing, it's about looking the part.

If you know the office is shirt and tie, you better AT LEAST be in a shirt in tie. Why would I hire a candidate who can't even be bothered to do enough research to look the part.

It is really silly when you go to an interview and they expect every computer technical candidate to know every possible programming language and interface that the company is involved in. It is just unrealistic. They think every employee should come with years of experience in every miniscule technology they are using. That does not happen in the real world unless the person changes jobs every time he finds another job making more money. Do they really want someone who will leave as soon as they find a better job? Sometimes there is an advantage to hiring a person right out of college. They havent learned all the wrong things yet.

Recently went through some interviews. One of them went pretty poorly for reasons similar to this. Basically they were asking questions about the tools I've used, how to fix things, etc. Then they asked if I've used feature X, which I hadn't. I knew the theory on what feature X was for but it was a newer feature we didn't use at my previous employer. So I answered that I didn't know what the tool did but I know what the problem X is trying to fix is. So he asks how do I use feature X...so I again reiterate I have never done so but perhaps it works like this or maybe this based on how feature Y works. Continue on and then he asks do I use advanced X. The entire time this guy had his phone out checking email I don't think he paid any attention to my answers else he wouldn't be asking me stuff I literally have zero way to know. Its the programming equivalent of asking if you know Cobol and then asking you to write Cobol when you say you don't.

As for questions you can always ask questions. In the tech field asking why the person works at that company or why they've stayed so long is always valid plus it gives you a great insight into what drives people there. Ask what a bad day looks like. What causes the most grief during crunch time. Are you expanding the team or is this backfill (you probably know this already hopefully). For my current job I went to glass door and read about the company and positions, there was some older very negative stuff up there. So I asked point blank about it. They talked about the problem in detail and what they've done to fix it. Use the question section to 1) determine if you really want to work there 2) push the idea that they need to win you over and you aren't just desperately looking and 3) that you are interested enough in the position to have done some research.

No generation prior to the Millenials has ever had a poor job interview. This is completely unprecedented and totally newsworthy.
lol, very true

Youth are always stupid. Always have been, always will be. That's what makes them the YOUTH.

So, there are obviously two sides of an interview -- the interviewer(s) and interviewee. I won't tolerate rude interviewers any longer. Below is a repost of a post I made a few years ago describing the worst interview I ever attended as the interviewee
You ain't seen shit son. I remember interviewing for tech jobs and the interview people were HR people. They didn't know a god damn thing about tech at all. They asked me about my final project in university and it was obviously that neither of them had any clue what I was talking about. Why would they ask me about my tech project if they're both HR people who probably failed high school math?? Absolutely mind boggling.

btw that happened like 5 times. The people doing hiring for tech jobs were HR people.

You pull up to the order window at mcdonalds.
"Hello and welcome to... hold on, I need to take this call."
You wait for 2 minutes.
"Sorry about that. Larissa was dumped and she wanted to cry with me. Can I take your order?"

It says that the candidate was providing acceptable technical answers up to that point, but their conduct either demonstrated blatant disrespect for the interviewer or a complete ignorance of Western social norms. Since most hiring managers understand that teaching technical skills is much easier (and the knowledge much easier to quantify) than teaching manners and etiquette, a faux paus like answering a cell phone sends a very clear signal to the interviewer that the candidate is not the right person for a job that requires any type of human interaction.

Nice political troll attempt, though

Had a guy interview at my company for a software developer position. He was a total douche and referred to himself as a "bro-grammer". He got a phone call in the middle of an interview, pulled his phone out, looked at us sorta confused like he was considering asking us if it was ok, then walked out the room without saying a word to have a 5 minute phone call. It was rather odd. He was really smart and we probably would have made him an offer if he had a better attitude.

Haha. Wow. Typical millennial behavior.

You have to see how many millennial we interview that are total douchebags.

Even when hired, they get run out in less than a year.

I know that you're trolling, but if you're IN THE MIDDLE OF TALKING TO SOMEONE, is it OK to answer your phone? Ever? No, it is not.

This is also a gigantic red flag that if you do get hired, you will probably be surrounded by clueless coworkers because of their incompetent hiring process.

HR is just a level to filter out the bigger morons and nut jobs. After that you still need to talk to an engineer who will decide if you can actually do the damn job.

For hynix I had both in the room at the same time.

LOL, HR people are easy to fool and their eyes just glaze over. Try again. I've worked at one company that had semi-competent HR people. The rest of them were full of clueless buffoons who really had no marketable skills so they said "Hey, you guys can work in HR."

Many in Gen Y weren't raised with baby boomers values, thats what they mean by "traditional."

Can't wait until the baby boomers are out honestly.

Actually Gen Y is very bad at handling their sicktime off, they come in sick anyway and make everyone else sick as if getting sick will cause you to lose your job.
