Maybe these people see the absolute idiocy of working for someone who will not allow them to take a phone call or text someone when they want to. Shocking, I know....

In every case I see people saying we were going to hire the guy (probably because he was smart enough to smell the stale corporate stench in the interview room) but then he dared to answer his phone in my presence. I mean what does that say about you and how pitifully you have bought into the corporate slavery scheme?
LOL! I hope you enjoyed writing ever word of that troll.

Actually Gen Y is very bad at handling their sicktime off, they come in sick anyway and make everyone else sick as if getting sick will cause you to lose your job.

It's no longer considered morally acceptable to take your grandparents out to the pasture in their miserable senility, so we have to go about it in more subtle ways.

Wearing Jeans and a Dress shirt to the interview thinking its okay.

hahahaha

Not sure this is a millennial thing. For example, I worked as a contractor for a guy who wears a full suit and tie to work every day with a strict "no jeans" dress code for the entire customer-facing staff (probably all staff). As a security contractor I had a uniform, but I wanted to apply for a position directly with the company and would need to interview with him again. Last time I interviewed as a contractor wearing dress pants and a dress shirt and all went well. This time, if anything different, I thought I should wear a suit. I consulted my mother who suggested the worst: Jeans and a dress shirt.

DOH!

She was born in the '40s and lived all over the USA and thinks this is OK.

I interviewed a guy; maybe early-30s who has a USC EE undergrad and was working with my company as a circuit designer for years. He was demoted to a test technician, and then he applied to work with us on device development and fab. Two of my bosses (I have so many bosses) interviewed him on the phone and wanted me to talk to him. I insisted that it be in person.

He sat across from me, slouched in his chair with knees spread. I'd tell him that we work on some intense stuff with short deadlines and demanding goals; how does he feel he would do on something like that? He'd respond, "I dunno. I never did it before." Twice during my 30-minute talk with him, he shrugged. That was his answer; he shrugged at me!

I strongly objected to his hiring, and we passed on him. I understand why he's a technician.

One of the guys in my graduate research group was finishing his PhD. He was in his 30s because he stayed in school forever. Had like physics undergrad at Harvard and masters at MIT, both parents we profs at MIT, and he did his PhD at UIUC. He looked great on paper.

Grad advisor got him an interview at Sandia, and this guy pulled out pics of his cats from his wallet, started imitating his cats, and told the interviewer about how he came home to find his gf in bed with some dude on Christmas day. The interviewer called my grad advisor to let him know what the guy had done.

He got hired by a Chicago law firm. Last I heard, they were paying him to study for the bar so he could do patent work if he passed.

I've worn jeans and a tee shirt to interviews, and have gotten jobs. Then again, I'm and Engineer working in Silicon Valley.

same here. i've had places actually specifically tell me not to wear a suit. i really dont mind wearing a suit... i actually like wearing ties occasionally just for fun, but yeah.

i got offered a job once on the spot by the ceo of a place , while wearing jeans , a pair of adidas and a polo shirt. this was in LA though in tech.

a few places said it was ok to wear shorts, but i haven't quite gone there yet. though i would have to say all the jobs i've actually ended up taking i had a tie on for the interview.

No surprise, the more I interact with younger people these days the more I realize they are not only clueless but lazy and rather stupid......then again if people my age would have been better parents maybe it wouldn't have turned out this way.

To me it's not about impressing, it's about looking the part.

If you know the office is shirt and tie, you better AT LEAST be in a shirt in tie. Why would I hire a candidate who can't even be bothered to do enough research to look the part.

Why would the candidate need to "look the part"? Shouldn't it be about "doing your job"? Ridiculous.

Because first impressions matter.

To daft people.

BTW, I always make sure to look and act the part, because most people........ are fucking idiots. Doing your job ineffectively is actually why most people who get fired, do not get fired. It's typically because of personality differences or the perception of not "fitting the part".

Which should a good manager hire: An effective employee who looks odd or a well dressed buffoon? The former well get fired for BS and the latter will be kept on and given less and less work and/or pushed around to different departments without reprimand for being an idiot.

Most people only care about surface level shit, not skill, talent, intelligence or the actual product a person delivers. Some companies/mangers do though. These will always outperform morons/shit-companies that value unimportant things.

Sure, in theory it would be great to spend enough time interviewing people to figure out the better worker. In reality you get hired based off of a ~30 minute to 2 hour interview. I typically have to interview 6-7 people a day when we do our campus recruiting so I really don't have that much time to spend with each person.

First impressions come down to limited time. There is no way to fully communicate who you really are, so symbols like the brands of clothes you wear, where your degree came from etc. will communicate probably more than you can communicate verbally over 2 hours.

n00b.. most people are daft.. ergo. you must play dress up to impress the HR twats to make sure they don't ding you on whimsical grounds..

any tech guy worth his salt knows the bare minimum when it comes to job interviews...

try talking to some Google guys who went through the hiring process; 7 rounds of interviews with different departments and levels of management.. asking questions that make your Stanford prof. feel like a buffoon.. and then what? you get keys to the 'good life'? hah!

I love talking to the dunderheads who are in "marketing" who majored in "communications" in undergrad (code word for people who can't do basic algebra).. marketing skanks should be paid $20k /yr. max.. these shitheads are mostly leeches and parasites at companies..

have any programming and/or math skills.. get a 'real' job. or if you have business acumen..do something.. the fucktards who "graduate" from diploma-factories, I mean, "colleges" with shit degrees in non-STEM fields need to be whipped in public..

welcome to america..

Excellent advice.

Often people approach interviews with an Oliver Twist mentality: "Please, sir. May I have a job?" They should approach them with the following in mind: "Why should I work here? What does this company have to offer me? Will I feel challenged here? Can I succeed at this company and in this environment?"

That kind of confidence and attitude is noticeable and gets people hired.

It's a balancing act. Go too far with your advice and you can easily talk yourself out of a job. I started doing that recently with a few interviews where the boss concluded I wouldn't be a good fit, just an honest conclusion based on what I said and what the job entailed. I had a lot of confidence and was a passive, 'show me' candidate. Opening up too much probably about pros and cons of their position.

Was true, and I agreed each time, but still nice to walk away with an offer on the table.

Absolutely true especially at mid size to big places. If its listed on a stock exchange 100% true.

If you are actually incompetent a startup will fire you. I've seen it happen more than once .

At my current job in tech there are several what I call " Forrest gumps" . Likeable totally worthless morons. We try to make sure no one has to count on them but they still screw up. That said management is "nice" and they can't fire nice people. It makes the actual good people angry but yeah it is everywhere.

This is what I liked about sales. No bullshit, your numbers were posted every week for all to see and if they weren't good enough you got fired.

I'd be happy to hire people who can do the job. They just need to work for free for about 3 months so I can see. That way I can take my top 5, get them to work for free for 3 months, then ditch the 4 that suck.

Also, they would still need to buy nice clothes and wear them, because the company policy dictates they wear them!

You should use this as a writing sample for your next interview. If none is requested, use it as the cover letter, because that is a writing sample.
