I interviewed a guy; maybe early-30s who has a USC EE undergrad and was working with my company as a circuit designer for years. He was demoted to a test technician, and then he applied to work with us on device development and fab. Two of my bosses (I have so many bosses) interviewed him on the phone and wanted me to talk to him. I insisted that it be in person.
He sat across from me, slouched in his chair with knees spread. I'd tell him that we work on some intense stuff with short deadlines and demanding goals; how does he feel he would do on something like that? He'd respond, "I dunno. I never did it before." Twice during my 30-minute talk with him, he shrugged. That was his answer; he shrugged at me!
I strongly objected to his hiring, and we passed on him. I understand why he's a technician.
One of the guys in my graduate research group was finishing his PhD. He was in his 30s because he stayed in school forever. Had like physics undergrad at Harvard and masters at MIT, both parents we profs at MIT, and he did his PhD at UIUC. He looked great on paper.
Grad advisor got him an interview at Sandia, and this guy pulled out pics of his cats from his wallet, started imitating his cats, and told the interviewer about how he came home to find his gf in bed with some dude on Christmas day. The interviewer called my grad advisor to let him know what the guy had done.
He got hired by a Chicago law firm. Last I heard, they were paying him to study for the bar so he could do patent work if he passed.
