The great and honorable GWB would NEVER . . . I repeat NEVER willingly agree to abridge the inalienable rights of others. You should be scourged for the suggestion.

At least they aren't invaded yet...Guaranteed though if Kerry takes office.

If Taiwan declared independence, China would be foolish to invade. Any US President would have no choice but to jump into the fight. It is our obligation. Some here, especially BBD, have forgotten what Clinton did when the Chinese started making noise. He sent some destroyers as a friendly reminder that Taiwan is an ally that will be defended.

With China pressuring north korea, the current foreign policy is supporting China rather than Taiwan. This is a different view than a few years ago, when Clinton supported Taiwan and before NK was a huge issue with them lobbing missles across japan and all.

Our principles can't be bought, bartered, or shaken. None of this changes anything.

Do you really think that? Do you think Bush would do a damn thing seeing as how our forces are already spread so thin and such meddling in China's affairs would be seen as an act of war?

The United States will never leave an ally's side. We will never sit idly by and let a Godless Communist entity rape and pillage innocent Taiwan. America will never let any of that come to pass without kicking some major ass.

Depends on how many hippies and beatnecks in the US protest...Remember Nam? Doing what is right is not necessarily black and white, unfortunately you have to appease the masses as well even if they have the combined intellect of a brain-dead retard

No oilfield, but they sit on the next best thing, which is a oil shipping pipeline. Which is why I think the US would protect Taiwan.

Thats right, most of the oil that South Korea and Japan receive come from ships that go directly past Taiwan. If China does capture Taiwan, they would be in a position to choke that pipeline. This is bad because a choked pipeline would severely weaken both a SK defense against a NK invasion and the Japanese economy. This would be disastrous for American interests and for American troops in the area.

Also, Taiwan is currently used as a shield against Chinese influence into the Pacific. If China were to take Taiwan, they would use it as an unsinkable carrier in which to project naval influence into the heart of the Pacific and thus reducing American naval superiority in the region. Once again hurting American interests.

Man, for those who do not know, this protest is more of a anti-mainlander Taiwanese (mainland chinese who came to Taiwan after defeated by the communist) rather then anti-communist chinese. DDP (current ruling party) picked this date 2/28 because it was the date when mainland chinese first came to Taiwan 50 some years ago after the defeat and killed many Taiwanese to put down anti-mainlander riot. 228 was a symbol of struggle against the then ruling KMT and not the actual communist Chinese.

The simple fact that DDP chose 228 for the protest just shows that this is another BS political move by the current president Chen to divide Taiwan and get support from native Taiwanese.

It's sad to see Taiwanese infighting against each other while expecting some other country to rescue us if communist Chinese attacks.

The President of the United States is not "the Dub." He's Dubya.

The Brain Dead Aholes being the French who refused to give up their claim or the ones who scheduled the Gulf of Tonkin incident? It was a winnable war that continued to drag on because of a half-assed approach to fighting it. Our boys went in to battle with one arm tied behind their back due to beauracrats who were pandering to the beatnicks and hippies.
