Was amped up last night to play halo 2 on live with a bunch of friends. Fired it up and it crashed everytime we were logging in. It would make a crazy sound and artifacts would appear all over the screen. The console was then irrecoverable at that point. So I kept turning it on and off until I saw it. The dreaded RED RING. It goes away every now and then so I don't know what's up. We only got half a game of halo in and finished ninja turtles. Sigh....goddamn you microsoft.

This is bad. Why do people keep buying new ones? Kick MS out of the videogame industry if they can't get this right.

I don't think anyone has the authority to "kick them out of the videogame industry"

Besides once you get a working console (which isn't THAT hard) it's an awesome machine.

The problem is that the problems with 360s could happen to anyone it seems like. My 360 has overheated many times, but I haven't gotten a hardware failure yet. I'm still afraid that its going to happen sometime, so even though I have a working console, I'm still worried about how long it will stay that way.

I'm hoping mine lasts at LEAST until they start replacing broken ones with new ones with the updated cooler cpus

Consumers do.

They keep buying them because it has games like Gears of War that are exclusive and phenomenal ...and already available for purchase.

Usually this would be the case, but remember your talking about Microsoft here. Profitability in the Xbox division seems like more of a convenience to them as opposed to a necessity.

If we went by this standard then there would never have been a PS2.

Playing PS1 upside down anyone?

The only problem PS2 had was the disc read error. While it was a huge problem, it only affected the first 1 or 2 models of the PS3 (like the 30000 and 30001 or something similar). Basically, if it wasn't a launch console, it was fine.

Still, the error occured after the warranty...so that sucked. At least they fixed the problem, though, where MS still has yet to eliminate the problem on the 360.

Actually I think it affected versions 1-4 and they got it right with versions 5-7. Then after that versions 9 and 10 was little iffy sometimes on the laser but not as bad as the first 4. Versions 8 was Japan only and 11 was Euro only. Then came the Slim line at version 12 which some had overheating problems afaik version 13-15 are fine.

Pretty much MS shouldn't have skimped on the cooling for the 360 which is where most all the problems are coming from. But how is one to know months(or years) down the road its just not gonna cut it and cause a high failure rate? I'm sure had they known they wouldn't have went cheap on the cooling.

But Sony only needed to buy different lasers from a different company. MS needs to redesign the cooling along with other things so it might not be as simple.

If MS can get the RROD problem under control this fall with a revison, then the 360 will be in a great position in the market.

If not then it will continue to suck up money in repair fees and drive away angry customers.

I think you misread him. There would never have been a PS2. Playing PS1 upside down anyone?

Of course, the original Xbox had issues too, didn't it? So there wouldn't have been a 360 either.

Hardware failure are unacceptable. It pisses me off to no end that MS has taken so long to fix their issues. It forced me to buy mine at Costco when I could have potentially gotten a better deal elsewhere. At least they've extended the warranty to cover the RRoD for 3 years. I had a Sony DVD player die on me, googled the error and found that it was a very common problem caused by a design flaw, and it normally happens after 18-24 months - but of course they didn't extend the warranty. My wife had a Vaio laptop that also had a known, common issue. No extended warranty there. After getting burned on $2000 worth of Sony hardware, is it any surprise that I'm apprehensive about buying more? I don't buy any of their consumer electronics anymore. The only Sony products I buy anymore are their video games/systems.
