My granddaughter wants to play Minecraft because her cousins are playing. I've never played. Are there items she will have to buy from a store that she will be pestering me about?

It's a one time fee as far as I know unless you play on a private server that can charge fee's for some stuff.

A: nope.

but the amount of time you will spend on it will wind up costing you more.

They make 3 versions:

1. PC
2. Console
3. Pocket

The PC version is $27:

https://minecraft.net/store

The console version is available for Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. They are both downloadable, no discs required. $20 on the Xbox store:

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/P...115-d802584111f7?nosplash=1&DownloadType=Game

Also $20 on the Playstation store:

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en...tion/cid=UP4433-NPUB31419_00-TRIALUPGRADE0001

The Pocket editions run on Apple iOS or Android devices. The iOS version is $7 and runs on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad:

https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/minecraft-pocket-edition/id479516143?mt=8

The Android version is also $7:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mojang.minecraftpe

Minecraft will also run on the Amazon Kindle line of budget tablets. If she doesn't have a tablet already, the base $49 Fire tablet will play Minecraft Pocket Edition:

http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Display-Wi-Fi-GB-Special/dp/B00TSUGXKE/

For double the money, they make a kid's version with a rubbery case & an awesome 2-year warranty: (they basically fix or replace it if you break it)

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YYZEQ1G/

There's also Minecraft Story Mode (story-based version of Minecraft), but most people just play the regular Minecraft game.

Also, if you're not familiar with Minecraft:

1. It's basically a Lego video game. You're dropped into a world where you can build stuff in 3D. From there, it gets as complex as you want. For example, you can combine materials to make glass or swords using a crafting table. You can play by yourself in creative mode or survival mode (where you need to eat & build shelters from monsters at night), or play on a server with other people.

2. The graphics are terrible. Like 8-bit in 3D. But that's not the point. The point is the creativity (i.e. building stuff). There's a barrier to entry because it looks stupid, but once you play with it for a bit, you'll start to understand the appeal.

3. It is addicting. I didn't get into it until last year. Kids go to bed & you'll still be playing it hours later haha. If you ever enjoy Legos or building models or woodwork, you'll get a kick out of Minecraft.

4. There is a massive community behind it. Tons of mods. Youtube videos. Toys. All kinds of crazy stuff. For example, you can buy a bracelet that has a USB stick inside that runs the game plus your save files & backs it up to the cloud, so you can play Minecraft wherever you go: (at home with your parents or at your grandpa's house)

They're using HoloLens to let you play an Augmented Reality version of Minecraft on your coffee table: (skip to 2:30)

People have build working calculators, computers, and even hard drives in Minecraft. Companies are doing AI testing in Minecraft. You can do deathmatches or build monuments. That's just the tip of the iceberg!

Man, back in 2011 my whole shop had a Minecraft server that I hosted at the house. That was a freaking blast, except when one guy just picked a direction and kept walking for weeks and the world file size was near a GB.

Wow, thanks for all the detailed responses. She has access to an original, first gen Kindle and a Dell Venue 8 and a Wii.
She also has access to the wife's 17" laptop but it would be better to keep her off that.

MC is about the most open and versatile game I have ever seen.

There are about a billion mods available for it changing it into a billion different things than just vanilla MC. The problem lies in the fact that the modding community and mod process sucks ass.

I was so happy when my kids figured it out on their own and I never had to look at MC and it's bullshit mods again.

That being said, it's an incredibly amazing game.

The PC version is honestly the best. Console is good, but building and moving with sticks instead of mouse is a pain. Pocket edition is even worse in controls. Story mode is an entirely separate game.

Modding is incredible, and I reccomend using techit or feedthebeast as clients. They've got everything pre-packaged and separate from the other installs so you don't need to worry about any issues in one game effecting the other versions. The only mod you need in all versions is optifine.

You two could also play together if you set up a server. (Free and fairly easy to do.) Two licenses for the price of one AAA game is pretty great. I've got way too many hours in the game. :S

My 2 yr old just started watching her bro playing it. I guess she'll be next. This game is never gonna die, lol. Yes, I've had to buy this game for every gadget he's had + the toys + the legos + clothes. So, that 1 time purchase is definitely just the start, but it's fun to see the stuff they create and how much they get into it.
