My 7 year old son's computer (which is a year older than he is), started crashing a lot late last year. It is an old dual core AthlonXP4000 plus with 4GB DDR2 RAM. He started to hog my Phenom II X4 840 so I decided to build him this:

Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini-ITX Computer Case (RC-110-KKN2)
Thermaltake SMART 500W Continuous Power ATX 12V V2.3 / EPS 12V 80 PLUS Active PFC Power Supply PS-SPD-0500NPCWUS-W
ASRock Motherboard DDR3L SDRAM Socket FM2+ A88M-ITX/AC
AMD Black Edition A10-Series APU Processor with Radeon R7 Graphics (A10-7860K-AD786KYBJCSBX)
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s PC3-12800 CL9 1.5V UDIMM 240-Pin Memory (BLS8G3D1609DS1S00)
Toshiba OCZ TL100 Series 2.5" SATA III 240GB SSD (TL100-25SAT3-240G)
The problem I am having is random bluescreen errors
Since the last reinstall of win10 with memory at 1066 here

Wondering if I have a bad motherboard. Going to swap out memory then processor to check. Anyone else using this mobo? Going to also check that I made no installation errors, which for SFF builds is a royal pain in the arse

Memory was originally at its rated 1600. I down clocked it to 1333 and the errors seemed to lessen. When it started crashing again I down clocked to 1066. I will check out the audio drivers when I get home

If the RAM is rated for DDR3-1600 it's extremely unlikely that it's behind the errors when running at that speed. 1600 is a standard JEDEC speed, not an overclock or anything, and should be universally compatible with newer DDR3 hardware. And if the RAM were defective, a downclock wouldn't change that. Run Memtest to check if it might be defective.

My HTPC runs an ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ AC - a slightly different board than yours, but quite similar - alongside an A8-7600. I haven't had any serious issues, and I haven't made any real effort to optimize it on the driver/firmware side. Most of it was installed straight through Windows Update.

If I were you, after running memtest, I would reset the BIOS to stock settings and update it to the newest version, then start looking at driver issues if it still wasn't stable. If none of those work, you're down to process-of-elimination troubleshooting, replacing components one by one until you find the fault.

Still crashing after the audio driver check. I have another FM2 system that I will be taking home to do detailed troubleshooting. I suspect it is probably a bad motherboard but we shall see. One thing I know is I am done with MINI-ITX builds.

Why is that? I get that troubleshooting is more of a hassle due to cramped space, but that's entirely down to your choice of case. There are plenty of "roomy" yet compact ITX cases out there (Fractal Define Nano S, Bitfenix Prodigy, Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ITX), that take up far less space than ATX or mATX cases. And in terms of reliability, there's no reason to suspect that has anything to do with it.

That's very understandable in a CM Elite 110, but that is also one of the smallest ITX cases out there that will accept a full size GPU. As I said above here are plenty of "roomy" ITX cases with good cable management and room for building with relative ease - but most of those weren't around a year or two ago. Still, you don't have to go mid-tower to get easy access to components. Of course the bigger your case the more elbow room you'll have, but I've not heard many complaints of the cases I mentioned above.

Update: Currently running memtest86 14 errors found in test 6 on pass 1 seems to be replacing the third to last F with 7 at some addresses. Going to replace that stick and rerun memtest86. By the way I have no intention of putting a discrete GPU in this machine, ok now up to 20 errors

Sounds like good news in the end then, RAM is at least relatively cheap and easy to replace

Still running on that 4GB stick of RAM. Upgraded my pc from phenom II X4 840 to Ryzen 5 2600 with 16GB ram and RX580 8GB. Son is now almost 10 and hogging my computer again, even though I gave him the RX460 from my old machine. I am planning to get 16GB RAM for him and hopefully he will stop hogging my machine (and he has a blasted Ps4)
