I run 1600x1200x32 on my Mac Mini with no lag, and no slowdown; I'm not sure what you're talking about in terms of lag. I just recently threw a WD1600JB into a FireWire enclosure and have been booting off of that; the hard drive boost is a big performance jump.
Wow!! you are booting from firewire to your system? Interesting.
Macs have booted off Firewire drives now for a long time. Since the Mini's drive is a Lower RPM Laptop drive, A good Firewire external will be much faster. I am doing the same thign as he is, running 7200RPM Seagate 8-Meg Cache drive in a external Firewire enclosure. Makes a big difference in boot time and application launch speed.
Sometime this summer the new 100GB Seagate Momentus 7200 2.5" Drive is suppsoed to be out. I will be getting that drive for the Mini so I have have a fast drive internal.
