Mini Rant: My HOA being hypocritical?

I guess there are bigger fish to fry, but this one irked me just a bit. I try to keep my house looking nice, keep the yard in check, etc.

However, I got a nastygram from the HOA last month telling me that the back of my house needed to be pressure washed, "In the interest of preserving the overall appearance of the neighborhood and the value of the property."

True, there was a bit of green mildew/algae (whatever you want to call it) on the backside of the house, but it wasn't really all that bad as I had just pressure washed it myself last summer. After getting the letter, I pulled out my pressure washer to do the deed, but the damn thing wasn't working. So I scheduled a company to come out to pressure wash the house and clean the gutters.

No harm no foul. However, this afternoon, I decided to take my son and dog for a walk around the neighborhood and noticed that the community property lawn (the grass lining the sidewalk -- about a 1/4 mile long, 10 ft wide along both sides of the road -- along the main road of the neighborhood which is maintained by the HOA) hasn't been cut in about a month is nearly a foot tall.

Considering this is among the first things you see when entering the neighborhood, it just struck me as a bit hypocritical to call out a homeowner (while probably justified) without taking care of your own business...

My HOA ever dings me about anything on the back of my house they are going to be very busy explaining why they were trespassing on my property. There is no way they would know anything about the back of my house unless they come into my yard.

The only folks who go to HOA meetings are those who love to witness cruelty to someone else or, those who go to beg for mercy. HOA's are havens for all the misguided folks who were picked on in third grade and have never forgiven the world.

My house backs up to the woods, but when you're walking down the community sidewalk, you can see a portion of the back of my house. I'm guessing the HOA peeps were walking along the sidewalk, spotted the back of my house, and said "BOOM, GOT HIM!"

It's dark out, so I can't get a shot of the back of the house right now, but here's a front shot I took a few days ago -- you see how you can see the back of the house in the background? You get a similar (more limited view) of the back of my house when walking along the sidewalk (especially before the trees have had a chance to "fill in" with leaves).

I would bring it up, but I decided to call them this afternoon. I called and left a message; they called me back within about an hour. The management company said that they have gotten a number of complaints from homeowners in the past week about the high grass. Apparently, the maintenance crew that usually cuts the grass decided they will get around to cutting it "when they feel like it", and she's currently in the process of taking bids for a new contractor. She said that she "hopes" that they'll have somebody by the end of next week, but could offer no guarantees.

There isn't a lot of direct sun that falls on the back side of my house, so mildew (I assume that's what it is) does start to accumulate on the back of the house, especially if there is a lot of moisture in the air. That's why I pressure wash the right and back side every summer. The front and left side of the house get a pretty direct shot of sunlight, so the mildew never builds up on those sides.
