When you break a blade, you generally do much more than that. The baldes will usaully drop down (boom strike) and chop off or severely mangle the tail boom. You also usually break the blade grips or pull out the ball ends on some of the controls. 50-100 every time you crash, even if its minor.

Also, the blades of the bigger models are weighted at the ends, and could easily kill/impale/maim you if they were to hit you or break and fly into you.

Ouch.

After looking at this thread for two days I finally decided I needed a Helicopter with more control than the one offered here.

I bought a Piccolo FP ARTF for $300 shipped. I was torn betwen this and the Hornet but finally went with the Picollo (cheaper). Both heli can be modded to a collective pitch (CP) from a fixed pitch (FP)

I know experts here has stated to get a gas operated one but I am just not ready for noise and all the other stuff that comes with gas operated RC's

If anyones interested this is the best place I could find for good Electric RC helicopters. Shipping was decent $8 and I believe they are based in florida,

Good luck with the Piccolo. I had one for a couple of years. It's a twitchy little thing. Make sure you do the training gear mod, the hub mod, the blade mod and have plenty of space to fly.

Is the Piccolo fixed-pitch collective? And the Pro adjustable collective?

Edit: not sure I understand the whole TX/no TX thing. I have an old JR radio set; could I use it with one of these without buying the TX? Do these things have the throttle integrated with the RX?

The base piccolo is a FP (fixed pitch collective) the pro has been modded to a CP (collective pitch)

The good thing about the piccolo is that it has a strong user base and has a lot of mods available

check out this page for all the info you will ever need about the PIccolo

Paul Goelz Piccolo site

good luck

I had a gas R/C chopper that I never got round to flying, but I could swear that it was a 5-channel machine: throttle, collective, pitch (main rotor), roll (main rotor), yaw (tailrotor). Do these mini helos dispense with throttle or something?

Well in my opinon you just shot a nail through your own foot, but hey, once you learn to fly a extremely delicate and very twitchy helicopter, the bigger ones will be easier. Don't fly near a road, even small gusts could make you lose it for a newbie.

Do make sure to post your experiences for everyone else. I highly recomend you spend the 200+ dollars for a simulator (that uses your own controller)

Yes, I'd be interested in your progress too AniMig.

gotincon, I understand why AnMig as decided to go on this path. RC helicopters are EXPENSIVE and we want to go the cheapest route possible. I, myself, wanted to get a ultra-micro rc heli to fly around in my room. I'm starting to have second thoughts though.

he could have bought someones used .30 size begginer setup for the same price

Parts will actually be cheaper with a popular .30 size heli, you will prob crash less with a .30 size heli than the small twitchyl heli

the picolo is much worse as a trainer than say the lite machines heli i mentioned earlier.

It is his money, I'm just giving my experienced opinion on the subject, since I have been flying for several years although I am nowhere as good as that kid in the video

At any rate, welcome to the hobby, there are many great websites that can offer help for anything you have ?'s about

I don't get it. Why do you think the kid is flying the helo in that video? The adult guy has the Tx at the beginning and the end. I have no idea WTF the kid is doing there.

Nah, the kid's not flying in that video... The kid is Danny Szabo, I believe... He's pretty good, but that is Jason Krause (adult) flying in that clip.

Hey Gang,
If it goes forward too fast then move the CG (center of gravity) a little further back. There must be some movable weight that can be added near the rear to keep it from pitching too far forward.

But there's nothing more thrilling than watching your mini-heli hover 30 feet above you, and then take off into a huge banked turn, and then flip upside down and crash into a tree.

My god this thread is going to make me wet my pants!
