Mini Review on the Micron 1100 SSD

I thought i would share this with you guys.
While doing the typical Amazon browsing, i noticed these guys:

At that price for 2TB i thought it was a steal... seeing how the samsung counter part is more then double.

So how does these guys compare to the samsung?


Windows Device Manager:

These tests were run on the Gigabyte X299 Aorus Gaming 9 Motherboard.

Micron 1100 2TB:

Samsung 850 EVO 1TB:

Not bad for a drive that costs HALF the price of the EVO huh?

And for giggles... the 960 PRO:

So overall the micron 1100 has a 1yr warranty directly though vendor.
Incase you didnt know, the Crucial was a subdivision of Micron.

I wish i had a crucial MX500 to compare these guys too.
The only crucial i have is a MX100 which would not be a fair comparison as those drives are much older.

This seems like a really solid deal, but I do wonder about the 1 year warranty. I'm currently using the fear of that coming back to haunt me as a reason to not pick this up, but it sure is tempting.

yeah the 1 year worried me so i puchased a square trade plan with it.

I believe i had 30 days to get one on the product, so it should be technically covered for 4yrs for the extra 8 dollars or so.
And they give u back the amazon credit according to the policy if the thing should die.

Well i will have to see the exact conditions and rules.

I really don't appreciate you making this deal that much more tempting by pointing out the Square Trade warranty. I am trying NOT to buy this and you are not helping.

That is a really good deal (though the price is now $25 higher than when you first posted).

P.S. I've seen these large Micron drives on sale before as well.....and the the very affordable protection plan (4-Year Protection for $7.75 or 3-Year Protection for $4.16) makes this look even better to me.

(Hmmm.....I will keep my eye out for more of these Micron SATA SSDs)

Sequential read speeds are a bit low for the Micron 1100 which is likely in part due to the controller.
It also looks like the 2TB capacity has lower sequential read speeds than the smaller capacities which is not what you would usually expect.
Something that can also be seen with the MX300 2TB:

There looks like there may be something else affecting the results here on top of that since speeds for all the drives are a bit lower than you'd see in most reviews (not just sequential read speeds either).

Do i dump my 7920X @ 5ghz for my 1800X which can only do 4ghz for a tad bit more I/O?

hmmm.... i think i wont miss that tad bit i/o, but i will miss the processor speed + extra cores from shifting platforms.

This is why you heard me ranting a storm in that meltdown thread about not wanting to install those dumb patches.... This is a gaming machine, i dont do anything like manage my bank accounts and paypal stuff... i do that on my office machine.

This machine is meant for just gaming, and occassional web browsing, with the intention of me getting nailed by malware once in a while for me to have to reset W10 every now and then.

But will Microsoft give me that option... :T

Yes you can avoid unnecessary performance drops by NOT installing updated BIOSes that MURDER iops.
Windows will update as well and that can be disabled through a registry edit OR using Steve Gibson's tool:

Would you recommend disabling the meltdown patch using the tool? Rig in sig, currently on BIOS 3402. I don't typically use VMs on this.

I just pulled the trigger on this for my 10-yo X58 system, I'd love to report on this, but I'm having trouble migrating Windows over from the old HDD. I got it from Amazon for $394, damn good deal imho.

this honestly is the perfect steam drive... lol...

Can store a bunch of stupidly obnoxiously large 50+gb AAA title games.
Performance is very good for fast loadup times.

And still seems to be the cheapest $/GB solution you can get.

I see the 1TB for $270 which isn't what I'd call a great price. The 2TB is $325 on Amazon which I think is actually cheaper than when @aigomorla picked up his.
