I'm sorry if this has been covered before but I can't find a good answer by searching...

What is the minimum graphics chip/card (NVidea and AMD) required to run a 4K display at 60Hz? None of the hardware vendors make this easy to find because they don't provide the refresh frequency in either the product filters or the specs. My use is for 2D only purposes (no gaming) and ideally I'd like a fanless card.

BTW I'm currently using onboard graphics (see sig) but obviously that won't cut it for 4K at 60Hz.

Ta ta!

There are actually quite a few cards that support 4k displays, it all depends on how low you want to go. You aren't doing anything with 3D, or photoshop or anything like that, just text and web stuff, no videos?
I assume you actually do want at least hardware decoding for videos you watch as well?
For example, a fairly new card like the AMD 460, supports 4k@120Hz, and has what you are looking for, but, again, I am not clear on what you are actually going to be using.

What monitor are you planning on using, and what does it have for input ports?
If you plan to use HDMI your options are more limited, but if the monitor has DP there's a huge number of cheap cards available.

Display port or HDMI 2?

Sadly not many cards will do 4k60hz as that requires DP 1.3( maybe 1.2?) or HDMI 2.

Looks like r7 360 might be the cheapest @ $80ish but at that point you might as well just get a 460 or even 1050 (more $$ though).

The 710 which is usually a good buy for display only for $25ish is DVI and HDMI 1.4 only

DP 1.2 is good for 4k60. The biggest problem with that resolution is that quite often when people want to use it, it's with a 4k TV with an HDMI port. That limits you to the nVidia 900 series and the current gen from both camps.

Yes, I'm looking at the possibility of using a 40" TV (maybe Sammy UN40KU6290) which would limit me to HDMI 2.0. That puts me in the $100+ bracket for a card, and fanless is not an option that I can see.

What's your budget? Are you willing to go used?

Do you want HDR support since you might be using a TV? IIRC it's HDMI 2.0a and newer that has that support.

My budget is $100 max for the card, and I'm OK with going used. Maybe something like THIS? It is HDMI 2.0b and is fanless.

Yeah, that would cut the cheese for your requirements.

There's a GTX 950 for sale in the FS/FT section here, might be worth taking a look at (although it has a fan).

That one seems like it matches your Reqs, though it is slightly over $100 ($105 AR). Not sure if there are any fanless 1050 but guessing they'd be $120+ if so, as fanless usually has a premium.

I am using a Sapphire RX 460 4GB Nitro card, in my OCed i5-6400 rig, to drive a 40" 4K UHD TV @60Hz.

It works really well, and the Nitro cards have a trick, they run so cool under desktop / non-3D loads, that they stop the fans under 50C. So that's an option if you want fanless desktop work.

I really like mine. It plays (vanilla) Skyrim @ 4K too.

If this is for HTPC, it's kinda pointless for now. For the time being you can't hardly do crap in 4k and dont even start on HDR, in terms of content. All due to DRM on PC being left by the wayside forgotten

FYI, I have the UN40KU6290, make sure to use the PC mode to get 4:4:4 chroma. Nice TV for the money, but the remote sucks.

I discovered that my Intel HD 4600 graphics does what I need. It can drive 3840x2160@30Hz which actually works fine for non-gaming purposes. Problem solved with no extra money spent.
