Minimum partition size for Vista beta install?

I have a 4gb partition that I use for WinXP, will Vista beta fit on it? I don't want to have to repartition to give Vista a try...

Need 15G for the install time. My vista drive is 8gb after install. This is a fresh install that I just did last night.
no other apps other than wlm

You could use a program like Partition Magic to resize your partitions so that it fits.

8GB AFTER INSTALL?!?!?!?!?! HOLY CRAP. What the heck is MS thinking? Are they putting in apps also? Including the full MS Office Pro? DVD Player with codecs? Games? Wait, that would still only be about 3 or 4 GB. Forget Vista. Go Linux.

I'm curious... what exactly is filling up that 8gb? It does seem extremely high. I always turn off windows restore points, move the swap file to another partition, turn off hibernate, etc. to slim down XP installs...

All the pretty pictures of course. I don't get it... I thought XP was bad when it take 1 to 1.5 GB and jump that up to 8 GB??????????????? The final may be slimmed down some... Wait and see...

Yeah. I just installed beta 2 today and it used up 8GB. I suggest partitioning at least 10GB.

You can partition it with Qpart, which can be found on Linux Live CDs.

Not that it bothers me much, seeing as harddrives are so cheap, but I can't help but wonder how one makes such a huge OS.
Just comparing to what I know, a fully loaded Redhat EL4 install is something like 4-4.5 GB, but that includes...everything, database, office junk, development tools, etc.

It probably will shrink a bit come retail time, as there is still all the debug code active in it as well. ASlo this is the betas are the ultimate edition which includes everything in it , home, home premium will have less stuff and likely take less room as well

No it checks for a minimum of 15GB before it will install.

First off this is a beta, so even though it's no longer running by default there are a lot of debugging components that are included.

Second, that includes space consumed by the page file, hibernate file, VSS snapshots, system restore and install flats (so no more media required just to install some application like hyperterminal). Do the math and you'll see that the OS itself is consuming much less.

Third, 8GB is how much gets used by Ultimate (other builds that dont include all the components should take a little less).

Fourth, you've got to be kidding me that you're complaining about space. How much does 8GB storage cost nowadays? $3 USD???

vista requires a minimum of 15GB to install. get like 20.

Vista is a big OS...its as simple as that. Its more advanced (or so they say) than XP, so you'd expect it to be bigger.

I performed an initial install of Beta 2, that I received from my Action Pack subscription. Nothing advanced was done; just click, click, next.. click.. and finish..

The reason why it's an issue for me has to do with backups. I strip down my OS partition to a minimum, moving Program Files, swap, temp, and any other non essential files to other partitions. Then I use True Image or Ghost or whatever to image the small OS partition for backup. I can wipe the partition at any time and reinstall or load a backup image to resolve any Windows weirdness I encounter. This is very efficent when the OS partition is 1-2gb, but at 8-15gb it's not going to work so well. I just hope there's something like nLite for Vista eventually to get rid of this bloat.

We'll it?s been awhile since I ran the Vista beta (can't believe I deleted my Linux partition to install it). But could someone do me a favor and take a look at the size of the built in games such as minesweepers, FreeCell, etc. When I had the beta each took up 50mb-60mb of virtual memory (this was x64 so it may be larger than a x86 install). If someone could look up how much space on the disc these applications take up I think we might find some of the install bloat.

As for the memory usage, go ahead and say that the memory usage is high because of the debug code, but on the same install I had Office 2007 and none of those applications took more than that amount of memory to run.

If you setup the exceptions correctly on your imaging software size should be much more managable.

I realize it's easy for you to just blame this on "bloat" but if you actually do a little homework before whining you'll find there really isnt much to complain about.

Err, I'm not whining Skippy, but it *is* an issue. File exceptions in the imaging program don't matter cause I'm imaging the whole partition, not files within it. I want a perfect replica of the *entire* partition with all the low level disk sector information intact. That should have been clear from my previous post, which you either didn't read carefully or didn't understand.

Whatever, just another reason to go with Linux. As TonyRic said, a good distro will be half that size and have most the apps you'll ever need already installed. My guess is that the final version of Vista brings the bloat down something more managable (4-5gb range).
