So, are there any family-folks here who made the dreaded minivan purchase? Is the Honda Odyssey the one to beat? I'm really not wanting to spend over ~$22K on the next large family vehicle, which probably means a 2005 or so.

The reason I'm looking at minivans is for the 5-6 trips per year we take to visit family. Our little Mazda Protege gets pretty cramped, especially at xmas time with the 4 of us and presents for ~400 miles each way.

Maybe a decently large SUV with good gas mileage? I think I'm planning on buying next month sometime.

Open to any family vehicle advice.

[Update]

Well, we decided to push off a new car purchase until this time next year, when our budget will have a bit more flex. In the meantime, we still needed a second vehicle until then, for convenience's sake, so we started shopping for cheap used cars.

A friend of my wife's mentioned that they still had their old minivan in the garage, going unused. There's a bit of history as to why it's unused ( Short version - they lost a child to illness a few years back, and they used the van for taking him to doctor appointments and treatments. After he passed, they just didn't have the heart to keep driving it daily. ) They did keep it running, maintained, inspected, etc.

It's a '97 Doge Caravan with 112K miles. Pretty clean inside and out - doesn't look like a 10-year-old vehicle. Runs good - new tires, belts, brakes, filters, plugs, battery. Not the best gas mileage - we've only had it a day, but I'm going to guess it's getting about 18-20mpg.

Gave them $2K for it.

At the very least, we'll have something to trade in (or sell) for our new vehicle next year. Should probably pay for itself by then.

Yup. We're about to trade our '03 Caravan for either Odyssey or Sienna.

OMG...you said the "SUV" word! :Q Shhh!! The birkenstock-wearing-alternative-fuel-vehicle-driving-vegan-no-meat-eating-guns-
ill-people-alternative-life-style-adopting-children-fur-is-murder majority here at AT will freakin' FLAY the flesh from your bones! :Q

Anyway, SUVs were great and better than minivans hands-down...until gas prices went through the freaking roof.

But still...how about a Mazda3 or whatever that hot 5-door hatchback is called? NOT a minivan, for cryin' out loud! BIG car...donkey cart...anything but the ultimate sign of emasculation!

Yeah, gas mileage for the SUVs seems so disproportionately high compared to minivans - even the smaller ones.

I'm also considering a large 4-door truck. I could get a bed cover for trips and actually haul some stuff when needed. But gas mileage would probably be even worse.

But I'm not that distraught over a minivan, as it'll be mainly my wife's day-to-day vehicle, and I'm gonna go ahead and get a bike next year.

You're spot-on about the Mazda3 = cute hatchback; but that's still a "compact/midsize" car, not really a good family hauler. What he needs is the Mazda5 - it's basically a long-wheelbase 3.

Or a Hemi Magnum.

The Odyssey is junk. My wife calls it "the gutless wonder". Her favorite is the Toyota Sienna. Personally I like the Saturn Relay van - DVD system (think of your kids here!), dual automatic doors, etc. The base is $22,335 and has a 240hp V6. If you get them used, even a year or two old, you can a heap of money.

He has a protege... the 3 is going to be cramped as hell as well. the 3 hatchback really isn't any bigger for passengers. the mazda5 I think is grossly underpowered if you factor in all the people you can carry... and I think it's still cramped.

face it, he has to get a minivan

Unless it's a hybrid good luck with that

GMC Acadia/ Saturn Outlook seats 8 and get 16 city/24 hwy. Compare that to the Odyssey's 17 city/ 24 hwy rating. I would definitely look at an Acadia or Outlook.

We have a Mazda MPV, its nice and serves us well. I do believe it is actually classified as a wagon, so my man cajones are still intact..

minivans are a god send for any family. We love ours. Can't believe we survived without it.
if you're manhood is defined by what you drive you got issues (/me looks at his '65 Ford F250 pickup)

A minivan has far more space than most SUVs ever will, unless you're talking about Suburbans. How many kids do you have? What about something like the Saturn Vue Green Line? Otherwise, maybe a station wagon? Lots of room, but not as dorky as a minivan and better mileage than an SUV. For some reason the Subaru Forester has always appealed to me. It's not very stylish, in fact I'm sure a lot of people think it's ugly, but something about it just clicks for me.

The CX-7 is a much nicer vehicle, IMHO. I like the Mazda5, though. It is an entry level vehicle, though.

You call the Odyssey "junk" and then pimp the Relay?

Maybe if she was driving a 1G Ody with the 2.3L I4, but anything 2G+ with the five-speed definitely isn't "gutless" - 3.5L V6 w/240+hp = more than enough hustle for a minivan.

4 of you? Maybe a Subaru outback. 4 seats that will work for long trips (5 in a pinch) and plenty of storage space in the back.

SUV isn't a word genius. It's an acronym.
