Minor CPU/Video Upgrade: Good/Bad Idea?

I built my PC about 3 years ago and considering doing a CPU & Video card upgrade (if not just the CPU).

Main specs:
AMD 3800+ CPU
2 gigs RAM
Nvidia 7800 GTS

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade to a AMD X2 6400+ (~$200) and a 8800GT (~$250)?

I'm dont' want to get a new motherboard, so my upgrades will revolve around just CPU & video card.

Let me know what you think or have any suggestions?

8800gt can always be reused later on. Personaly, for the cpu, I'd do a bandaid update, like a x2 3800+ and overclock it to 2.6ghz or so. Besides, you have s939, right ? I dun think there are any s939 x2 6400+ cpu's. Should get this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103052

I belive it is a socket 939. There's no better CPU?

What about the 4200+?

Both will OC to roughly the same speed. Both will be slower in single threaded apps compared to your current 3800+, so up to you if you want to go that way, or if you want to OC. You might be best of just buying the 8800gt, and do a mobo/ram/cpu upgrade in q1 2008 or so, when the new AMD dualcores come out, as well as Intel's new dual cores. Or qaudcores if you like of course, but everything should be even cheaper by then, easier to get equal performance in single threaded apps.

If your mobo can OC, the 4200+x2 for $60 is a decent band-aid.

The 8800GT is definitely worth it.
