by definition CPU can be used to term the big hunk of metal as it really is the central processing unit. Its rare these days that somebody calls a processor a "cpu", because its not really correct.

Apparently I live in a different world than you do. The entirety of the machine is PC or computer, or Mac. The central processing unit/amd chip/intel chip is the CPU... you know, the one under the big fat metal thing with fins.

The system unit is occasionally referred to as the CPU,
though this really means central processing unit.

In mainframes, you also get things like NAS, which would be the storage component of the whole system, so the CPU (as in system) could be referred to as a CPU, because it processes, and doesn't include things like storage, in those cases.
