I don't believe that someone is something simply because they believe they are. Is a transgendered man really a woman the moment they decide or is it only after they've finished surgery? Was David Koresh really God? The same complexity you claim clouds my judgement I claim clouds a simple definition.
And don't misunderstand me. Unlike a lot of the people in this thread that don't see Jenna as a woman, I don't have any hatred toward transgendered. I don't see them as lesser people. I fully support LGBT rights. I was outraged when Californians passed prop 8 at the same time they defended the rights of chickens (full disclosure: my actually opinion is let the state recognize "civil unions" and let the church keep "marriage", but prop 8 just plain bans it all outright). I've physically participated in a gay rights demonstrations. I'd continue to support them going forward... with the one difficult part being what this thread highlights.
Let's take something simpler. Something that doesn't allow for "the privately run pageant can do whatever they want" complexity. Which bathroom should a transgendered person use? I don't think anyone here will be able to convince me that Jenna isn't a male, but the question is should Jenna be treated as a male or female which isn't so simple? So, which bathroom should Jenna use? I agree, that if nothing else for the sake of everyone's comfort, Jenna should use the female bathroom.
It still leaves a lot of gray room for someone to figure out their own personal definition of the which gender "counts" though. You can call it some great big complex thing where it's not clear exactly what moment "I want to be female" turns in to "I am female", but don't be surprised if that cloudiness comes with the price of not other people disagreeing with you about where that line is.
