So i had two phone interviews. The first was scheduled for 11am. After, I successfully completed the first interview, i was directed to wait for a phone call "later in the day." (exact words). Unfortunately, I was driving when the second interviewer called (at around 2pm), and missed the phone call. I tried to call the number but it was not his direct line. What should I do? Was it totally my fault? I am drafting an email to the first interview, explaining and apologizing that I missed the phone interview. Should I explain that I was in the car driving while he called? Or can i just simply say i "missed the phone call?"

I don't know if I'd want to work for a company which just tells you to wait by the phone all day long for a phone interview.

I would be honest about it and apologize.
waiting around for a call at an unknown time is pretty bad too though. kinda like waiting for the cable guy from 8am until 5pm.

You should have asked for further clarification when the second interview was going to happen and set up a proper appointment. I wouldn't want to wait by the phone all day either and miss a phone call.

If they didn't schedule an exact time, that's on them. Send an email, apologize for being unavailable when the interviewer called and ask what a convenient time to reschedule would be.

I'll second this.

It's really their fault for not giving you a more specific time, but if you want the job it's worth being polite and apologizing for missing their call. If they don't accept the apology then it's probably not a good place to work at.

This.

If it's all the same to you even if you get this job and this is how this company operates you will probably look for another job shortly afterward.

Call them up and apologize that you missed the call. Reaffirm that you're interested in the position and were just driving at the time. Then proactively ask if they're available to speak on a specific day at a specific time. That way, if the answer's no, you're more likely to get a specific time in return.

People seem to forget that in the end you're dealing with other people. Everyone has called someone who was busy and unable to answer the phone. It's not a big deal. Just get in touch and say you were driving, unable to answer, and tried to call back but couldn't reach whoever you were supposed to talk to.

I once was called for a phone interview for an internship while I was walking down the street with some friends. Naturally I couldn't hear what they were saying so I asked them to hold a minute while I moved to a quieter area. This is not unusual and not a big deal.

I wouldn't even say you were driving. Just say you were unavailable. That could mean you were on another meeting, working, in class, driving, whatever. They don't need to know more than that.
