missing DVD drive

When booting BIOS sees the DVD drive set up as slave on IDE 2. And yes, the regular CD drive on IDE 2 is set as master.


Originally win2000 saw the DVD drive installed drivers and then rebooted. ***NOTE*** Right before it rebooted is displayed a message (I believe it was an error message). This message goes by so fast I can't read it.

I've tried "Adding and Searching" for new hardware and nothing is found.

I've also installed DVD software (Power DVD) and it doesnt see a DVD drive either.

I've tried different combinations of the DVD drive set up as master and slave on both IDE channels with no different results.

Each time I move the DVD drive to a different channel Win 2000 will go through the routine described above.

This DVD drive will work in my other 2 systems.

Any ideas??

More info like your system specs, the brand of DVD drive, are you using win2K SP2? would be helpful but as a generic troubleshoot, I would say check to see if there is newer firmware available for the drive that addresses the issue.

have you tried a new ide cable? if you hook up just the dvd (alone on a channel) will it be detected properly?

If you hook it up as a slave to the hard drive does it work properly?

I've tried all three of those things.

The BIOS will detect the drive and show up on POST

But it will not show up anywhere in Win 2K.

does it show up under device manager?

do you have the secondary ide chaneel apear as working etc and any bus master drivers installed?

what motherboard and chipset is it?

Just installed my Toshiba DVD drive - I have just about the same problem as you do - the system either sees my Plextor CDR drive
or the Toshiba drive. I haven't had time to start making adjustments but a friend who is a tech told me to put the Plextor as master and to install the Toshiba as slave on the same ide cable( right now I have each of the drives on a different ide controller).

Is there a Plextor drive on your system?

Don't forget about updating the BIOS.

Example: If you are using an ASUS A7V board, you must update to version 1004 or above. Otherwise, Win2K and WinXP will not recognize any CD-ROMs on the secondary IDE. Weird but true since I spent a week on this problem.
