You can believe that they are synonym, and i can believe that you're stupid and close minded.

On the other hand, jury nullification provides an important mechanism for feedback. Jurors sometimes use nullification to send messages to prosecutors about misplaced enforcement priorities or what they see as harassing or abusive prosecutions. Jury nullification prevents our criminal justice system from becoming too rigid--it provides some play in the joints for justice, if jurors use their power wisely.

If it's voluntary, you'll end up with professional jurors, and institutional bias. I'm not a big fan of the mandatory service, but I think it's the best way to do it with the current system.

Its almost like this already. People with important jobs can get off fairly easily with a note from their employer about how they can't be spared. Its certainly not a random cross section of the population at least.

I would imagine that juries on self defense cases or situations where a criminal was hurt on your property and is suing would love to know they could go for nullification. These are the exact situations where someone might be guilty of the letter of the law but not of the spirit and as such nullification would be appropriate. Yes it has been abused in the past and could be abused again but it should be an important tool in ensuring you are rightfully judged by your peers not just held up against the law.

When I had jury duty anyone that gave any kind of BS 'I hate blacks' answer or any of that crap was grilled pretty hard and not excused. Those that had plans that would be interrupted were allowed to bring it up with the judge during a break and if they had proof that they weren't making stuff up were let go. We had 45 people in the room to pick the jury from so plenty of people were going to get dropped but the guy took a plea before the end of the day so nobody got picked.

Yeah, that can be crappy if the trial goes on for multiple days. I was on a jury pool for a trial which the Judge said could take a week and a half. I don't think the people who didn't try to get off realized that they would for the most part lose a weeks worth of a paycheck.
