I've never heard of her before, but her tweet make it very obvious that she is complete worthless racist trash. Too bad she'll get a complete pass from the general media because she is on the "preferred" part of the political spectrum.

I read several articles at a feminism website recently and every single one talks about micro aggression and privilege. They have taken something that is worth keeping in mind and are attempting to turn it into the central mass around which everything else revolves.

Being white and questioning white privilege is a micro aggression and the fact you don't see this is because you are ignorant of your white privilege. What they really want is for you to feel extremely guilty about the color you were born with. hmm, where have we heard that before.

This woman's comment is borne from extreme racism herself.

Senator Dumbarse said:
State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal apparently said on Twitter: "LET ME BE CLEAR. When you exercise your #WhitePrivilege, don't think I'm not going to remember. I will use it for the future. Uncomfortable?"

Isn't the correct response to this just to shrug and go" Yeah, whatever. "

Why are people incapable of not rising to the bait nowadays? Even worse when people take the same argument, whilst decrying the tactic, and make it their own.

just the fact that her comment is questioned indicates white privilege. a stupid concept IMHO.

That is the appropriate response, but it doesn't work in the US. At some point, this will gain enough traction to affect policy. When that happens government and business will have to somehow prevent white privilege from happening, or make sure blacks are equally privileged. There will be lots of forms to fill out, there will be tax credits for the none privileged, there will be mandatory training to teach the privileged how to not exorcise their privilege. All of this will have to be tracked and reported so we'll be able to measure our improvement. There will be a lot of cost and boat load of paperwork for no real return. Though Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton will be paid millions in consulting fees for their seal of approval.

This is a good example of the neurosis that is ingrained in prejudiced people. When you *hate* something, you see it everywhere. Greenman here probably see's a black person maybe once a month. But he heard on the internet one time about this black guy who got something for being black, so he came here to warn us! He is afraid, worried that he will one day have to curb his hatred.

The only thing this senator said was "blah blah privilege" yet the right goes NUTS every time they mention the word. She is trolling you retards! You are just too wrapped up in you idiot echo chamber to see it. If you are actually getting scared that society itself is going to crumble because some black senator mentioned what everybody knows white people have: privilege, then you probably are racist.

When a cop pulls me over, he doesn't have his hand on his gun. He doesn't yell. He speaks NICELY and POLITELY because I am a WHITE GUY in a NICE CAR. That is privilege.

If I were a black guy in a nice car, do you think the cop would have left his hand off his gun?

That's because everyone gets all worked up and starts arguing about it, imbuing it with importance that it doesn't have.

Getting drawn into an argument about something trivial is just allowing the other person to set the agenda and rules. Be like the French, shrug and go "pffft", that annoys people far more if they are trying to drive an issue.

WTF is white privilege anyway ?

Just acting like a normal person ?
It's being let go with a warning for underage drinking and/or small amounts of drugs instead of having the book thrown at you for being a typical kid.

Yet we have several liberals frothing at the mouth in another thread that the NYPD has apparently stopped enforcing such minor offenses...go figure.

Because people don't want individual police making those choices as a political statement instead of a genuine policy shift. Pretty easy to figure don't you think?

People want those laws removed because they are bad laws. They don't want them selectively not enforced because the mayor said something true that made the police sad.

I think most responses in this thread have been pretty low key. No one is outraged. We are discussing the article and what she said. If it was anyone other than a politician, no one would care. The last thing Missouri needs are politicians fanning the racial flames.

Being outraged or not is irrelevant, you've succeeded in turning a stupid tweet into a legitimate subject for discussion.
The tweeter has won in that she's framed the argument and you're all circling her point.

Thank you. It was indeed an very stupid tweet from one of our public leaders and I'm happy to know we can discuss it. The words our politicians say to the public are strong indicators of policy they may pursue, regardless of the medium they use to release those statements. Be it on twitter or in a primetime interview, her words are important.

Can you please expand on what you mean by "making it their own" or "circling her point"?

White Privilege is a myth.

Every negative thing a black man has felt at no matter his age during his life time I have experience as well and I am white.

It is just many blacks have a long rubber band but they can only be stretched so far.

Inviting illegals to USA directly affects black people and I lived in those towns and am also affected.

The best way to get out of the hole is not to get any prison history. Stay clean. Yes you will be stopped. I was stopped as well for being white in some areas. It is rare but it does happen.

It is one of the reasons I left North Carolina.

Remember, white privilege is based on probabilities. Not individual experience.

Politicians are at least as stupid and lazy as the general public. Don't assume that they are intelligent enough to even remember what they tweeted last week never mind construct policy around it.

Can you please expand on what you mean by "making it their own" or "circling her point"?

It's a political move.

Make inflammatory, extreme but vague statement about an issue that you think is important.
This kicks off a starting point for the argument. You'll have a few that agree with you, a lot that disagree and loads that have no opinion.

If you start from a reasonable position it's likely no one will pay any attention and if they do they'll still want to get concessions out of the argument.

As the debate kicks off lots of the "don't cares" will be dragged in, and you'll find that concensus will tend to the more reasonable side of the original point.

Think of it like haggling. You start off really high because people think they got a bargain when you let them beat you down a bit.

The bit about "making it their own" was referring to the way everyone takes an argumentative tactic that they don't like and then uses it to support their opinion. They do this to make a point but it just legitimises the original person.

So person A makes overblown claim of racism, person B then does the same but in an opposite way. Person B thinks he's been clever and nullified person As point but in fact he has legitimised it by using the same tactic.

(hopefully the above will come across but if it doesn't I apologize, I'm on a phone and running around. Its not good for making an extended point)

Tldr; Best to ignore it when people say idiotic things.

And that's a complete mis-framing of the problem. Being treated civilly by law enforcement is not and should never be considered a "privilege" - it should be the expected behavior. The discussion should be about abuses against the civil rights of groups within our society and how to correct those.

By making the discussion about "privilege" it tacitly allows for the expected behavior to be wrong - if having parents who care, or being able to walk down the street without being accosted by law enforcement are seen as a "privilege" then everyone loses. Those who are being abused begin to accept their abuse as normal, and instead of fighting against the abuse, begin fighting to have others abused along with them.

I will not feel guilty or privileged for being treated normally - I will continue to condemn and speak against those who abuse fellow citizens for nothing more than the color of their skin (or type of genitalia, or choice of deity, or gender association.)

This includes those like State Sen. Chappelle-Nadal who want to attack and oppress not only those she sees as her enemies ("privileged" white people) but also her own supporters (abused african-americans who will spend their energy in hating the "privileged" instead of fighting the actual abuses.)
