Politicians are at least as stupid and lazy as the general public. Don't assume that they are intelligent enough to even remember what they tweeted last week never mind construct policy around it.

It's a political move.

Make inflammatory, extreme but vague statement about an issue that you think is important.
This kicks off a starting point for the argument. You'll have a few that agree with you, a lot that disagree and loads that have no opinion.

If you start from a reasonable position it's likely no one will pay any attention and if they do they'll still want to get concessions out of the argument.

As the debate kicks off lots of the "don't cares" will be dragged in, and you'll find that concensus will tend to the more reasonable side of the original point.

Think of it like haggling. You start off really high because people think they got a bargain when you let them beat you down a bit.

The bit about "making it their own" was referring to the way everyone takes an argumentative tactic that they don't like and then uses it to support their opinion. They do this to make a point but it just legitimises the original person.

So person A makes overblown claim of racism, person B then does the same but in an opposite way. Person B thinks he's been clever and nullified person As point but in fact he has legitimised it by using the same tactic.

(hopefully the above will come across but if it doesn't I apologize, I'm on a phone and running around. Its not good for making an extended point)

Tldr; Best to ignore it when people say idiotic things.

I see what you are saying, but I didn't apply that argument tactic. My OP attacks her ignorance of the "white privilege" term. Her trying to be inflammatory just goes to show her character. Her post on a forum or by a random person is just another troll, but I'd hate to see twitter-hatred spewing out of a politicians mouth. What is funny is that you describe the argument used in the first post against my OP by TreVader lol. ---> "What does black privilege look like?"

Ah, I see the problem and I apologise. I wasn't trying to pin all of that stuff on you. I did warn you about my post making abilities at the moment.

The original Tweeter is the one pulling the trick with the inflammatory post.
You posted it here and then the rest of it rolled out. That's the way these debates about nonsensical things happen. The was no real point being made in the tweet, in fact it didn't really make any sense. It did however drive and argument that the tweeter wanted to happen to places where she wouldn't have got it.

If you hadn't posted it we wouldn't be talking about what the tweeter wanted us to. That's what I meant about everyone circling her point.

Acknowledging White Privilege means acknowledging there is racism in today's world - which is a big No-No for some folks. In some folk's view, racism only exists when a non-white person claims a white person is being racist - period.

There is no racial profiling. There aren't people who are racist towards black folks. They are just being 'realists', not racists. Just telling it like it is.

Oh, and race baiting, that is totally racist as well. But, there is no actual racism towards non-white people.

Some even have the balls to argue there never was any racism in America; it was all just a bunch of people who were OK with being whipped and beaten to work, for no money whatsoever - the very idea of working hard is reward enough! And, all those studies on how many mustard seeds fit into a human's skull - totally scientific, totally not racist.

Another 'benefit' (self imposed frankly) of white privilege, is being able to decide what is and isn't racism. The person being racially profiled, no no, they do not decide if it is racism (because they are baiting or just trying to get out of a crime),.. the white person who wasn't pulled over for the same thing the black person was pulled over - THEY get to decide what is/isn't racism.

What a joke.

WTF is white privilege anyway ?

Just acting like a normal person ?

I am a victim of white privilege:

In Kindergarden in the 1970's it is lunch time and I open my lunch box to eat my pbj and as I grab it and move it to my mouth a little black boy takes it from me and eats it in anger as he stared at me.

A good example of white privilege at work is what went on when that idiot rancher was camping out on FBLM land and the government wanted him off. You had white guys with sniper rifles zeroed in ON POLICE threatening to shoot them. FOR DAYS.

When was the last time a black person, or any group of black people, pointed guns at federal officers for hours and threatened them physically and verbally with death?

What do you think would happen if a bunch of black people from Compton decided they didn't like the government and pointed guns at local cops? And threatened them?

I can't recall a single instance of a black person acting like that and not ending up dead or in jail. There you go. Privilege

And that's a complete mis-framing of the problem. Being treated civilly by law enforcement is not and should never be considered a "privilege" - it should be the expected behavior. The discussion should be about abuses against the civil rights of groups within our society and how to correct those.

By making the discussion about "privilege" it tacitly allows for the expected behavior to be wrong - if having parents who care, or being able to walk down the street without being accosted by law enforcement are seen as a "privilege" then everyone loses. Those who are being abused begin to accept their abuse as normal, and instead of fighting against the abuse, begin fighting to have others abused along with them.

I will not feel guilty or privileged for being treated normally - I will continue to condemn and speak against those who abuse fellow citizens for nothing more than the color of their skin (or type of genitalia, or choice of deity, or gender association.)

This includes those like State Sen. Chappelle-Nadal who want to attack and oppress not only those she sees as her enemies ("privileged" white people) but also her own supporters (abused african-americans who will spend their energy in hating the "privileged" instead of fighting the actual abuses.)

Well said.

Bingo. That's the problem with the word "privilege" as currently used as a pejorative by social justice warriors. It connotes something undeserved, something that should be eliminated or "checked", when in fact it should be expected by everyone.

That could have been me..... if I remember correctly didn't I give you a tittie twister to boot? Don't worry it had nothing to do with your skin color, I just didn't like nerds back then. I am much more tolerant now.

This. I remember that guy on The Young Turks saying he was excited to see black people starting to carry guns and acting like white people after that Ferguson thing. Why? Immediate gun control. Black people with guns -> immediately need to make it illegal to have guns.

Cenk's right. If you get a bunch of black men doing something, it's only a matter of time before white people make it illegal. Most of our drug laws are based on old school racism. Banning opium was an attack on the Chinese. Banning cocaine was an attack on blacks, and the propaganda was so absurd that it's almost unbelievable. Cocaine crazed black men are raping white women! Then alcohol was banned, the ban destroyed white communities, and it was reversed a decade later. Drug laws have absolutely destroyed black communities and it doesn't look like they'll be reversed any time soon.

Great post! I never thought of that in relation to guns. Now that I think about it, I have never seen a black person walk around with an assault rifle in public. I see it regularly on white civilians.

Remember when they were doing that "open carry" protest and that black kid got shot for open carrying in a store? And the other black kid who was shot for LOOKING at an on-shelf gun at Walmart?

I agree with you. I guess the best way to get gun control would be to arm every minority. I guarantee the NRA would be 1000% FOR backround checks of black people were offered free guns. I wish beretta would do a promotion where if your skin is darker than a certain shade you get a free 92F.

I wonder how righties would like that?

What a joke.

Racism is for real.

I believe it.

But I also feel iffy about the term 'white privilege' as it seems to attempt to assign 'guilt' for just living in a normal society. Instead, I prefer to call it what it is. People being assholes to black people and making their life harder than it should be.

Remember, white privilege is based on probabilities. Not individual experience.

Which is why people need to stop using it to judge individuals. That is simply prejudice.

Acknowledging White Privilege means acknowledging there is racism in today's world - which is a big No-No for some folks. In some folk's view, racism only exists when a non-white person claims a white person is being racist - period.

The way you're phrasing this, it sounds like you're saying that racism can't exist outside of privilege (or power, oppression, whatever you want to call it)

This is unfortunately how sociologists have reframed "isms", making the statement that black people can't be racist (and women can't be sexist)

One major problem I have with the "white privilege" term is that it places all non-white people, or so-called "people of color", whatever that means, in the same privilege-lacking group. That's really deflecting any actual analysis of issues that specific groups have in whatever historical/cultural context they're in. And while the issues black people face in this country may have some overlap with the issues hispanic people face, it'd be very ignorant and insensitive to simply consider them to have the exact same issues. Much less asian people, who are considered to be "of color" or "white" depending on however it best suits the argument - but generally speaking they tend to be given an exemption from white privilege guilt.

The underlying concept, that racism is driven by no more than a direct rejection of a person based on his or her skin pigment not being exactly white, is really silly and makes it impossible to really understand racism, much less do anything about it.

Looks more like female privilege Or a funny Tick-Tack commercial.

It's funny - when it happens to white males it's white privilege, but when it happens to white females it's "benevolent sexism", with an underlying message that it's thanks to misogyny.

For example:

Black people far outnumber white people in prison -> racism against black people
Men far outnumber women in prison (including white men vs white women) -> misogyny

And on the flip side:

Men are heavily overrepresented among rape perpetrators -> misogyny
Black people are heavily overrepresented among rape perpetrators -> racism against black people

I was mostly joking, but I should've been clearer about that.

I am of two minds about the "white privilege". On the one hand, I have non-white family members and I can tell you right now I would never ever want to trade places with them, and appear even part middle-eastern.

On the other hand, when I applied to college I took the SATs and since they had no "middle eastern" race thing I put african-american (my father was born in Cairo). I scored very well, and NAACP offered me a $50,000 scholarship if I were to basically just ask for it. Well, I didn't because I am not black. Or even african. But still, it's bullshit that if you put one race on a college app, you can get in with a 300-600 pt SAT deficit from another race. And $50,000 in scholarship money for an SAT score that would merely warrant a "nice job" to a white guy. Which is what I got.

So IDK.

PSA: Cairo IS in Africa:

Cairo is the capital of the north African country of Egypt. It is one of the largest cities in the world and it is the largest in Africa.

You should have taken the money.
