I'm sure most of you couldn't care less about the Mets, but lately they have been quite intriguing.

the mets 1, 2, 3 in the batting order might be as good as there is in baseball. the SS is very very fast, Matsui is a solid number 2 and Carlos Beltran is about as good as they come.

where the mets are really weird is their 4, 5, 6 and 7 spots. these four will probably change with Piazza most likely holding the #4 spot. but all four of these guys will probably put up between 27 to 35 homeruns (Piazza, Floyd, Cameron and Mientkiewicz), decent power but the averages will probably be low with lots of K's.

but the most intriguing player in their lineup is probably the best #8 batter in the MLB (and he probably won't stay at #8), David Wright. this kid is the next great 3rd baseman.

will be interesting to watch them although they really have no shot at beating the braves this year, not with that pitching staff, good for 5 innings in each game but their top 3 starters will go 6 mb 7 and they have no middle relief.

Season 2

Well, with a month and change left until the season starts, it's time for a new thread.

C Paul Lo Duca
1B Carlos ("C-Del") Delgado
2B See below
SS Jose Reyes
3B Mr. David Wright
CF Carlos ("C-Bel") Beltran
LF Cliff Floyd
RF Victor Diaz/Xavier Nady

Regarding 2B:
This season looks promising and we have a slew of 2B's ready to take the position. It seems like Boone has cornered the mets by stating he wont join a team as a reserve, Matsui showed up at camp with a new personal trainer (from the Seibu Lions, his old Japanese team)., Anderson Hernanez brings a AAA phenom season that in 19 at bats appeared as smoke and mirrors in the ML, and Jeff Keppinger, and when he had is only stint in the majors in 2004 as a fill in roll, in 33 games with 116 AB's he batted 284 with 3 home runs and stole 2 bases.

Regarding RF:
As far as the Nady/Diaz platoon, I'd really love to see Diaz get the go, I really think he can put up 280/20/90 type numbers, but lets see what Nady can do.

As far as the rotation, there's 3 locks:
Pedro Martinez
Tom Glavine
Steve Trachsel

Regarding the rest of the rotation:
Then, Victor Zambrano and Aaron Heilman are all but promised the final two spots... a few others including Yusaku Iriki, Jose ("It's Lima Time!") Lima, Brian Bannister, John Maine and Alay Soler are competing for starting rolls.

Regarding Relief Pitching:
The relief core looks solid and looks to be some mixture of Wagner closing, Duaner Sanchez setting up, Chad Bradford, a leftie SU (Royce Ring, Dae Koo, Darren Oliver), Jorge Julio, Heath Bell Steve Schmoll, Juan Padilla, Mitch Wylie, and Matt Perisho. Most of them competing for spots...

Regarding the bench:
They have a slew of bench players in Julio Franco, Jose Valentin, Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro, Chris Woodward, and those who don't get starting positions out of spring training.

Mets = poo. Now give the Tigers a top prospect for Urbani, this Wright kid should do.

I'm pleased with just about everything the Mets did this offseason. They got truly one of the best players in Beltran, a great (at least for 2 seasons anyways) pitcher in Pedro who will put asses in the seats at Shea..etc. They got a great infield insurance policy in Miguel Cairo who was excellent with the Yankees. I also like Willie Randolph as manager..I think he'll do just fine.

So far this spring Jose Reyes has looked great, Kaz Matsui looks surprisingly good at second, David Wright is gonna be a star and Doug M. is as good defensively as it gets at first (and he has decent enough offensive skills). Piazza has looked really good this spring and he actually has been throwing out bases runners trying to steal second.

I think the outfield of Cliff Floyd, Carlos Beltran and Mike Cameron could be one of the better outfields in baseball though a healthy Floyd is a must.

One thing I loved seeing this spring is all the base stealing. These Mets will be stealing like hell under Willie Randolph.

The pitching should be fine though that bullpen needs major help. Pedro, Glavine and Benson should all be good. Zambrano needs to learn how to throw strikes but the talent is there. The Trachsel injury was a shock and he will be missed...Kaz Ishii is no Trachsel.

I expect a good, fun and competitive season from the Mets. I don't see them winning the division but a wildcard is not too far fetched.

I say they are an 85 win team, which compared to the past couple of years is a drastic improvement.

no doubt, they made great moves in the off season, omar minaya deserves kudos.

braves (ya, i'm a braves fan living in Mets Land, NJ) will probably win the division tho, a lot of people are picking the phillies, but the phillies just suck, they have no real winning tradition there and just don't know how to win.

how long do you think Wright will stay at the 8th hitting spot tho?

i think he should be 5th.

That wont last too long. He'll start killing the ball soon enough. Some say that Willie did this to give Cameron more at-bats during games since he just came back from an injury. I think slowly David will go lower in the lineup. The nice thing about having Beltran, a healthy Piazza..etc.. is that there is less pressure on David. He should succeed nicely.

The lineup will probably be:

1) Reyes
2) Matsui
3) Beltran
4) Piazza
5) Floyd
6) Wright
7) Cameron
8) Mientkiewicz

Reyes, Matsui, Beltran are all switch hitters so Floyd and Wright can switch depending on who is the opposing pitcher.

In no way is Doug Mientkiewicz even close to a 27 to 35 HR guy. His best year was 15 homers in 2001. The Mets have a lot of good players for the 1 ,2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 holes, but they lack the middle of the lineup guys who really crush the ball. Floyd is always an injury risk, and Piazza is really getting up their in age. The Met's pen is also pretty awful, though their SP should be improved and will be solid 1 through 3. Zambrano and Benson HAVE to have good seasons for the Mets to contend, and they better hope Glavine doesn't start to decay (he'll probably be solid though). Losing Trachsel sucks for them, as Ishii isn't a good pitcher... he walks as many guys as he K's. David Wright looks like the real deal though; if he starts mashing the ball like he is or will be capable of, then he could slide down into the 5 hole.

I think they'll be vastly improved over the last couple years, and a fun team to watch because of the speed they have, like someone said above they're going to be stealing like crazy. My biggest hope for the season is keeping everyone, especially reyes, healthy. Maybe playoffs this year, but filling a couple holes they can easily become major contendors for the WS in 2006.

I haven't been excited about the Mets since the lockout (and then baseball in general)... but times are certainly going to change this year... not much more to add except Wright should definitely hit 6th at the lowest. I think he would thrive under pressure judging from how he handled himself as the spotlight shined on him more and more at the end of last year. Can't let him have a quiet & shadowed sophomore season...

Pedro should really rebound after last year.....

Although the best curve ball now belongs to Ben Sheets, Pedro should still get up around 250-270K's

Sheets was downright nasty last year... check out his K/BB ratio!

Edit: Pedro will need to pitch around 235-240 innings to hit 250 k's, based on his past K/9 innings numbers... not gonna happen, I don't think.

eMMM!
EEEEE!

METS! METS! METS!

Can't wait to see a Mets team that can actually hit. Been a few years since we had a decent lineup in there. I felt the last few years the pitching staff was getting the shaft. They've actually had a respectable ERA for the last 3 years. Moved to Atlanta 2 years ago, and I'm tired of watching the Braves smack my Mets around like schoolchildren. Maybe this year we get a little payback. Bobby Cox is the best REGULAR SEASON manager in MLB history though, so it'll be tough.

Cleveland Indians are gonna be damn good, better watch out. I'd love to see them and Boston be in the ALCS, because then I could truly say whichever team won I would be happy.

And gotta support the locals too, hopefully the A's and Giants do well.

Am I the only person who hates the Yanks and the SOX? I always thought the World's most annoying fans title went to Yankee fans, but after 5 months of hearing SOX fans they don't seem so bad.

September 2005 - 10 Redsox caps in all of Atlanta.
November 2005 - You can't go 5 feet without seeing one.
