Justin Verlander is 39 years old and just won the Cy Young. The Mets have decided that they're willing to give him $86m for 2 years. The Mets now have over $85 million committed to two pitchers (Scherzer is the other) for 2023 which is higher than the total projected payroll for 7 full teams (Rays Royals Reds Guardians Pirates Orioles Athletics). This puts the Mets projected payroll at $67m more than the Padres.

Edit: Trea Turner headed to the Phillies. 11 years, $300 million, full no-trade clause. I'm thinking the Braves are going to let Swanson go at this point and look towards some of their young talent. Maybe Swanson will embrace the devil magic and head to the Cardinals?

Edit2:
Taijuan Walker: $71M, 4 years in Philly
Haniger agrees to three-year, $43.5 million deal with Giants
Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a one-year, $17.5 contract
Josh Bell to Guardians. $33M, 2 years

Edit3:
Source confirms: Aaron Judge in agreement with Yankees, nine years, $360M.
José Quintana in agreement with Mets on a two-year, $26M contract
Kenley Jansen to Red Sox for 2 years, $32m

Edit4:
Catcher Willson Contreras and the St. Louis Cardinals are in agreement on a five-year, $87.5 million contract,

Edit5:
Bogaerts to Padres $280m / 11 years
Braves Acquire RHP Joe Jiménez (Trade)

Saying buh bye to deGrom for Verlander seems like a great move.

His postseason record was worse than Max’s though…

I would take Verlander over deGrom in a heartbeat, but not for that price.

Trea Turner headed to the Phillies. 11 years, $300 million, full no-trade clause.

I'm not happy about this signing frankly. Yet another super-expensive "old" man starting pitcher.

At least it's only 2 years and if it brings a WS victory I'll be singing a different tune but right now the Mets are a weaker team next season IMO.

Losing DeGrom however hurts far more. Pretty clear he WANTED out.

Verlander had the best ERA in the league this last year's and damn near the best modern ERA of all time. Going to miss him on the Stros.

If he holds up I agree he's a terrific pitcher.... who will start the season @ 40 years old and is coming off of Tommy John surgery.

Him and a geriatric Scherzer as 1-2 do NOT make me optimistic about 2023 for the Mets.

Yeah, I think Cohen pretty much just wants one world series win but... Mets gonna Met. Scherzer died in the post-season when the Braves won the WS, and he seemed to be fatigued towards the end of their season this past year too. I think they'll be good for the regular season but I'd be surprised if they both have the longevity this coming year.

And if they hold the old guys back in the regular season so they're potentially stronger in the playoffs, right now I don't see anyone good enough to take up the slack on that pitching staff.

Plus they share the NL East with the Phillies and Braves who are both pretty dang talented.... and YOUNGER especially in terms of starting pitching.

Houston won this year because they overall had the strongest pitching staff from top to bottom by far especially middle-relief!

Too old. Too many innings on that arm. Too much $$.

Shit WS record.

Exactly why Astros wouldn't sign a multi year.

I'll still miss him. However, our bullpen is deep AF.
There's actually less risk in the JV deal than with Jacob DeGrom. Although JV is old, he just won the CY and could squeeze out another solid season (or two). The damage is limited to $86M.

DeGrom hasn't pitched much the past couple seasons, and that isn't exactly confidence building when you're on the hook for $185M over 5 years.

And STL has their Molina replacement. Catcher Willson Contreras and the St. Louis Cardinals are in agreement on a five-year, $87.5 million contract, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN

I'm not sure Molina is "replaceable" in terms of the intangibles he brought to the Cardinals.

He's another one of those players whose existence proves people that actually believe "there's no such thing as clutch" are 100% mistaken.

Oh, I completely agree, but he's not there no matter how you look at it in 2023. Contreras is a good... position pickup.

Bogaerts to Padres $280m / 11 years

As a Mets fan I have a special deep-seated dislike for Yadier Molina.

Also a TON of respect.... that guy was key to the Cards postseason success over many years. (several @ the expense of my team!)

THIS pleases me!

Not all that excited about Robertson though.... he's just okay.
