As mentioned in the World of Tanks CBT threa, my health isn't great and concentration is hopeless but I plan to update my site with BP info if I can (need to read ToS to see if there is an NDA)

Should be a damn fun game)

Hmm....at first glance it would appear to be Eve w/o the lifetime commitment and simulated fighting. Oh noos....I feel another possible addiction coming....

Hopefully more like Elite than EVE. Think we are due for a space sim that doesn't feel like an Excel spreadsheet in space. We need something that feels fun, epic with that deep space feel. Kinda like Firefly would be very cool and would definitely suck me in. (played EVE for years, love the game but the point and click combat and large fleet lag were turn offs that eventually burned me out) Fingers crossed this F2P game is worth downloading.

One thing I want to know about any game like this is whether or not it uses randomized formulas to determine damage like fantasy RPGs do or whether, if you hit the target, damage is non random/predictable. Any idea about that in this game?

Yea, oddly, the ships look very similar to Eve ships. I played Eve religiously for 4 years...but I finally got tired of moving everything when a corp or alliance would collapse...and well it just ate up too much of my time. I did truely enjoy that game, it just really requires too much time to be "decent" at it.

The only problme I see with a real time battle system (ie: click -> shoot -> damage) is just the same as Eve...lag. They are saying FPS in space..so that would lead me to believe this is the plan, and well..grr..I can never get a decent ping in shooter games.

Given this 2-3 hours and I am feeling the 'new MMO' feel with a vengeance! *lost* is not the word for it.

It's quirky, kinda fun... strange at the moment but I'll get some more game time and write up a first impression on my site for you guys. Hopefully some decent screenies too.

Looks gorgeous graphically but the art style feels bland compared to Freespace 2 imo.

I could very much see myself playing a game like EVE but one that you actually fly the ship as opposed to EVEs "click in space to move" model as well as one that lets you aim instead of EVEs "the guns aim for you" deal.

i used to think like that and then I thought about 1000 people in one solar system dogfighting and how much lag there would be from getting input from the clients enough to recreate a realtime simulation like that. Fuck that I want to play the game.

Then I thought about in a real sci-fi future there would be no dogfighting zipping around each other. Hell in EVE 10km away is close range. 30km to 70km is medium and 70km to 250km is far. Nobody is going to be eyeballing a hunk of lead hitting a target moving 300 meters a second 250km away. Eve is realistic in that sense.

You have a point, and I agree(as per my earlier post), but I do love space shooters. Kinda hoping I get picked for this to try it out...either that or time to dig out Starlancer....

I've been playing this for a few months now, initially I was real excited about the game but as time went on I started to get worried....

First of all, there are many technical issues - random crashes, graphic glitches, bugs etc; well, yes, that's the point of a beta, but some people can't even get past the first few missions! And they're actually the lucky ones for being able to log in, everytime an update is released the patcher gets wonky, players often would have to completely uninstall and reload the files manually themselves...several times. While the team had made good progress fixing the game, but the problems I described above are still happening in an alarming frequency makes it real bothersome for a game that'd been in development since early 2009.

Also, if you're coming from EVE or lusting for a Freespace/TIE Fighter online based sequel....sorry pal, it ain't a living universe where you can slowly build your galactic empire or be an elite fighter pilot in the middle of an epic war, it's no different than your typical F2P arena shooter.

Basically you take a mission from a terminal, get warped to the instanced sector, kill X amount of enemies then jump back for reward, rinse and repeat....of course there are story missions as you grind to certain levels, but they don't deviate far from the standard ones...except with cutscenes. Other than that, there's not much else to do, there are no trade routes or mining runs(a relief for many, I suppose); could fly out to free sectors for open pvp, but it all boils down to who's carrying the most repair drones since lag is pretty bad it'd take a while to kill anyone, sometimes projectile weapons glitch out in the middle of a fight or you may spawn without shields, ridiculous.

Players can customize their pilot with many features but they can't get out of their docked ships and walk around the stations to interact with other avatars...so what's the point of letting someone choose colors for his tatoos? The UI is pretty clunky too, have to wade through waves of non-streamlined menus just to get to what you're looking for..especially not fun during the heat of combat.

Well, maybe I'm being too harsh, but the game is not smooth enough to be enjoyable at this point...and it's gonna be published by a F2P game company, I wonder how much support are they gonna provide?

Wow, it's in beta and it's only been in development for a couple of years? This game is going to fail hard. Good MMOs can't be made in that time frame let alone ones that try to be FPS's too.

Really "when" you get in makes no difference, although with the latest patch changes, this might be the best time to start because you can actually do stuff w/o waiting a month for skills.

I am disappointed in what the above poster said about black prophecy. I didn't have too high expectations, but it really doesn't sound that interesting (the trailers looked decent..but thats not uncommon). Truth is though, after playing Eve, something simpler might seem boring. I would hope it would be different and interesting enough to not warrent such comparisons..but how can you not.

Everytime someone says i should get back into eve, I would of saved $100 in subscription fees if i just ignored the advice. It does not change the months of learning no matter how they do it.
