Snagged a key, gonna give it a whirl. Loved Freelancer so if it's anything like that I'm already interested.

It is. You can buy upgraded parts, but you just can't buy a different type of ship. It's all about increasingly better crafted or dropped parts, an ever-upgrading system with the same chassis.

It WILL be free to play + item shop. This was set in stone when Gamigo bought Reakktor.

Gotcha. I thought there'd be a small "entrance fee" so to speak but apparently not, so even more impressive!

So I went through the tutorial and it seemed cool, up until I tried to do the first mission. So much lag I really couldn't do anything. I'll try it again, but really, the lag is bad.

All of the starter "open" zones (read: pvp enabled) around the starting station are going to be chocked full of lag. Those who played StarWars Galaxies will notice that there is a lot of bumblebee and rubberbanding -just like KESSEL.

If you want lag-free missions, dock at the station and open the mission terminal.

Once you get past the prologue by picking a faction (after level 5 and after completing certain missions), the same thing applies. All open pvp zones seem to lag when a number of people are in the same sector. Either change instances of that sector or go find a different sector.

Remember, unless you have specific instructions to go complete a task in those open sectors, you should still be able to complete missions with various station terminal missions.

I found the same thing, but only in that first sector. The other 2 sectors you had to go to in that mission also had a bunch of people in but didn't lag nearly as bad. I'm not sure why it's so different.

It's numbers. If the other sectors didn't lag, it's because they had fewer players in them.

Makes sense. The mission steps weren't explained very well and it took me a bit to figure out what they wanted me to do after enabling that first droid (or w/e they call it). I'm sure there was a good chunk of people getting stuck there longer as well for the same reason.

I started it, the intro was pretty good. The voice acting was pretty bad, but the gameplay so far is fun. Reminds me a lot of Freelancer.

Here's the answer to a a bunch of common questions:

Before you ask ANY questions, for the love of Jebus please, go into mouse mode (space bar) and look at ALL of the buttons that appear at the left, top, and right of your screen. This is how you will play the game outside of combat.

Read! The game tells you a lot about how to get the job done, don't skip the help windows when they pop up! Things you might miss, like the ability to right-click people and objects in the game to interact with them (in mouse mode), will make your gameplay much more pleasant.

If you need to locate a person or an object in your sector, Press U. This opens a list of hostile, neutral, and friendly targets in your sector including NPCs that are in their own ships patrolling friendly stations (like Noah and The Spire), stations to communicate with (right-click), specific ships for quests, containers that need checking, probes that need downloading, whatever the hell you're looking for, it'll be there.

When all else fails, try something. Try to minimize the number of questions asked in global by making an good effort to solve the problem before asking. Remember, try the buttons in Mouse Mode or Press U; what you'll be looking for will most likely be found using one of these.

Do not mix weapon types installed until after the prologue. (I'll explain later if someone asks)

Shields are stupid heavy (SIX mass !!) and pointless at this low level, buy a repair kit and learn to fly without one, noob.

You can't get to Pan's Junkyard until after you've rescued the Priest. Go do other storyline missions.

Enjoying the game so far as I chug through the storyline missions. Lag can be bad at times. Some of the VA is good, like the Professor. But a lot of it is bad. I also feel like there are a few too many cinematics. Too many epic videos of me undocking in noob freighter ships.

The cinematics drop drastically post-prologue.

Bloom is a huge FPS sponge. Drop it or just turn it off. Some people are reporting +20 FPS after removing bloom alone.

So what you're saying is for the price, it's worth it? (Price being free, genre being space shooter, competition being none) It's staying on my hard drive even though I haven't played in two weeks. There's nothing else like it right now, so until something better comes along, I'll suffer.

What I'm saying is, it's like any other MMO that enters the market, buggy and laggy.

What alarms me is that there does not seem to be much progress since January. If it hadn't been for the fact that this specific niche has been effectively dead since Freelancer (mini-revival and shout out for DarkStar One), it wouldn't really hold much sway over me.

I wish a P2P mmo company would pick this game up and make it less grindy. I would pay the monthly if it was just tweaked added more missions and other things. For a F2P its actually pretty good and pretty good looking.

Anyone having an issue with framerates? I've got almost everything set to it's lowest, except draw distance and it's murdering my machine in 10+ ship firefights.

I know my X2 6000+ (AM2) is aging, probably kicking on for 5 years old in the tech world but this takes the cake!

I'm also experiencing an odd bug. I played the same mission 10 times yesterday, same map, same mission type... but on two occasions, my framerates dropped into single digits and barely made it past 16 all mission. As soon as I got back to base, it was fine and going on the same mission again straight after, was fine too.

I'm running on Pentium D 3.2 w/ 4870 and I've not had any issues with framerates at 1920x1080. My only real issue is lag, bad lag.

Throw in a Ctrl + F9

and

/a show_connection 1

See what your FPS and Ping/Latency is like.

I'm chugging into the tens when in a solo instance with 10+ ships flying around at almost lowest settings.

5 years is an eternity in the tech world. Old machine is old.
