Obscure piece of literature or adaptations of names already within the game or a part of my real life identity.

I just pick whatever comes to mind/whats on my mind.

One of my GUild Wars characters (if hes still there, haven't played that game/account in a long time) is Toilet Punisher cause my buddy came over one day and said he was gonna punish our toilet. He gave 'er a good workout.

My other GW character is Sub Utex. Basically I was probably tore up on subbies at the time of creation.

And yes I know GW isn't a MMO but whatever.

MMO are not the only games to have character names.

Anywho, I prefer something stupid and/or nasty that isnt taken yet. It helps me remember it and helps other people remember me (if I am playing online).
Poon Jab is a good one but it usually gets banned after a while and then it and variations on it are made illegal in character creation.

The only places where its allowed have already been claimed.

In guild wars when I finally made a female character I called her Elridia Silvermoon. I like those kinds of names for chicks.
For guys its normally Griff or Chainsaw or Todd.

Also, if you really wanna know where to get names try looking at some traditional RPG sources.

If you dig around online at some RPG sites, you could find a name generator or two.

Hit they keyboard a few times, delete letters where necessary, until something manageable comes out :>

i usually use obscure characters in books or the chaarcters who are only minor supporting roles, like the random villager who dies to some monster attack or the 27th guy in the platoon.

Occasionally I'll use the name of a major character from a book if its a pretty obscure book and i like it.

someytimes i just use the random name generator or a combination of the name generator and adding or removing letters.

Make something up which is pleasing to the ear. Keep it short though, that comic is spot-on about some people's names - I remember a cleric in EQ named Nosferematu Dontgetmanytells. If you name your character something stupid, expect to be treated as such (eg. Leetdawg, Buttfux, etc.). And for the love of god don't be the 500th guy to want "Legolas", but not get it, so add letters until you get it, ending up with something like Llllegggolasss or Ggganddddalffff.

i never understood that. i guess people just like to be asshats.
don't you play a game to be immersed in the world, especially when its an MMO?

Sadly it would often take me a loooong time to come up with an MMO character name. Have to think about the character, the class and the appearance and come up with something that fits and that I can live with. Not so long or awkwardly spelled that it would be a PITA to type exactly though. Something that sounds like it could be a real name in the settting. The idea being that if the name sucked to me later on, I'd be pretty much stuck with it.

A sickness really I suppose. Life would certainly be easier if I could just type in Ultimatekillerdestructionshadowdarkness, PiMpMaStAh984 or PooBreath or whatever. But truth be told, I usually avoid players with names like those. Not that all of them are immature asses, but the chances that they are seem to go up.

Unfortunately most people don't. And the genre is moving away from immersion.

Humorous names that stand out a bit. For Wow:

Meansam(priest), Chargingmom(Warrior), CrustyMcSuds (Mage), or the ever generic NaughtyRogue.

For Wow, I named my Undead Warrior "Nzkhek." Just made it up. Thought it looked undeadish.

For City of Heroes, I had a Female Mezmerizer with a huge bust that I named "The Titilator." I thought it was clever

depends on the game.
FF games i tend to use the names of people i know. make me feel slightly more interested in the characters and so i can call them up and tell them they just died.
for FPS war-style games i tend to go with something from either war books or movies. i usually lean toward Yossarian, if appropriate.
everything else i make up a character with a slightly epic and comic-booky type name. i try to lean toward something simple that sounds like it should already exist (in some cases, it does, im sure). generally, i like to keep with the style of the game. so i would use a Doctor ______ for a game like City of Heroes but not for a WoW because it wouldnt make as muchs sense. but i usually have a pretty good idea what type of chracter i want before coming up with a name.
the above sort of suggests i put a lot of thought into it but i tend to just come up with something that i will remember, i like and that people i know who also play that game will easily be able to remember and/or spell.

I generally just come up with something random. I try to keep it short and all lower case without special characters, because I hate messaging people with long convoluted names that are a pain to type.

There are a bunch of name generators out there if you're feeling lazy:

I have a single name for every one of my charecters. i got the idea of a place called "Kalrod" then i add something. Like in GW, i have Lord Kalrod, kalrod's Fallen, Warrior of kalrod, etc. get something like that...
