Queues aren't that bad. I waited like an hour for Faeblight and made my character already. And honestly, if there was massive lag and it was unplayable when you got in would be one thing, but there isn't. So I'll take the queues over the game being unplayable once you logon.

it's not free. i don't know why people keep saying this.

they need to open up more servers and quickly before they lose a ton of customers. warhammer never recovered from their botched start.

if you haven't bought your copy of rift yet i HIGHLY recommend staying away until you are sure they can fix the queue problems. the servers are capped at 1500 each, they have about 25 servers (US and EU) and claim they sold a million copies already. somewhere those figures don't equal out. server queues are around 1000 people on every server right now, and seem to be going up and not down as more people get off work and try to play.

what's really funny is the folks on the rift forums claiming this is the best launch ever for an MMO. making your servers artificially stable by lowering the population cap so much isn't impressive at all, because the majority of your customers can't even play the game.

Trion launched about 10 more US servers since 10 pst.

And Warhammer had a terrible launch strategy. Way too many launch servers and when the initial rush died down all those servers died with a now low population.

Been playing since it went live, damn servers were taken down to a performance tweak. Been having a blast as a bard, lvl 12 and been doing rifts constantly for the last hour, damn town keeps getting raped. Every time we finish an invasion and start to go back questing, another one starts haha.

I think they're a bit overwhelmed. I decided to go for Estrael (sp) since it was the only pve-rp server without a queue when I got in... but when I logged out just now everything is showing high or full, so odds are I won't be getting in after dinner.

Game official launch is march 1st...subscriptions start billing march 1st...
From head start launch february 24th to march 1st, your game time is free of charge.
That's how I see it.

Sure they could have planned that much subs, but name only 1 mainstream MMO that had a smooth launch...only one...even the "too much spoke of when new MMOs are released" WoW had a rough start, I know, I was there day 1.

I'm not arguing that they should have planned that much subs from head start, and i'm sure they did, it's just the effing whines about compensation when the playtime till march 1st is out of charge...even if it's not working "as intended".

It's a freaking game, damn coding and programming and 0s and 1s and when it's flooded with hundreds of thousands of players at once, even the best tested servers will have a hard time...

Anyways, I already pre-ordered but can't play till monday the 28th at like 8pm EST and can't wait to log in and read the effed up global chat filled with kiddies comments about how they want their mother's credit card refunded...

Just got up to level 7 tonight. It was pretty damn packed and laggy right in the starter area where you join the real world. I'm playing a warrior ATM, Champion-Riftblade-Beastmaster. Haven't played a good melee character in a while.

So if you reset your souls with the trainer, are there any penalties other than losing money?

No, you get all you points back but you keep your souls though.

I just wonder - why aren't MMO's at the stage where your characters information is stored on one master server which can be played on any game server so you can progress your character if the server you want to play on is full? Or why MMO's don't follow EVE ONLINE's model - one single server for everyone?

With the weekend coming up - I don't see it getting any better and I don't think it will die down by Monday either.

I just have to chuckle at Trion for suggesting to create a new character on a new server. What happens when that server becomes full? Create a new character on another new server - rinse and repeat until the populations are stabilized?

Why would they offer for free something that they can either charge you for (as a premium service to move characters) or use as a time sink (if you start new toons on different servers)?

I'd love to have more one-world games like EVE, but the fantasy-themed RPG genre is going to have to evolve a bit before it's possible. The game mechanics just don't work well. If you have 50000 people all on the same server trying to complete the same "kill x of enemy Y" quest, how the heck are you going to manage it? Then you have to start looking at something like the layering LOTRO added, where you might have multiple copies of a zone on the same server to handle higher load. IMO that's a pretty terrible solution.

Bear in mind also that while EVE is one-world, it's still relatively small. IIRC average is something like 25-30k players online and their peak is around 40k. That's nothing to sneeze at but it's small compared to many other MMOs. If sales numbers are to be believed there have probably been over 100k people trying to get into Rift tonight, for example. And even with that small-ish population, EVE has plenty of problems with lag and server crashes not to mention daily downtime for maintenance.

1,000,000 accounts already. Seems crazy. I hope we don't have a Warhammer problem with tons of servers at launch followed by many people quitting one month later resulting in empty servers.

Guild left Faeblight due to the queue.

1,000,000 accounts doesn't mean 1,000,000 buyers.
Anyone can create a Trion account without having to buy the game.

It is very difficult to have a game with one single server for everyone. Eve gets away with it because at any given time its total population is in the 5 digit range, and even then there are huge technical prices to be paid. There are systems that are lagfests due to load.

Probably not a reason for seperate servers, but a side benefit is you get to split the avatar naming pool. There are only so many names out there before they sound contrived, so by having seperate servers they also increase the amount of times a particular name can be used game wide. Imagine if wow only allowed one unique name for the entire world. It's hard enough to find a name that isn't taken on a server basis.

Are updated animations still in the pipeline, or have they already applied the updates in the launch client?

I'm playing on Faeblight as a Defiant-side warrior. Character name is also Avogadro. Feel free to say hello if you are playing on Faeblight as well.

I took Thu and Fri off of work, and made it as far as L21, so I'm done with Freemarch and it looks like I pulled ahead of the masses. At least for now. So far the server has been very stable and everything has been smooth!

I think I finally found my first character...after reading the soul trees of each Warrior souls.

I'm gonna try a Paladin/Void Knight/Reaver. 1H weapon & shield, looks like there's cool attacks with the shield from the Paladin soul.

Looks fun!

I played a warrior in beta. It was fun but i decided to go a mage. In beta the riftblade/voidknight combo was pretty OP for pve and pvp. Flamespear/ fiery dot spell/ discharge combo did tons of damage. You could easily do 500 spike damage in the mid teen levels.

Maybe it was a different soul them riftblade though. I forget. At work right now so i cant look it up.

Server's down 30 minutes for maintenance. Good thing TBH, cause I have some RL obligations to handle this afternoon and it would've been tough to pull myself away otherwise....

Is there some kind of newbie guide type thing yet that explains the mechanics behind the rifts, invasions, etc?

Really though, the more I play this game the more I'm liking it.
