BURN!
HAhhahah!

What will you roll?

Not 100% sure yet.

When I played the beta, I made a bunch of characters.
Some of my favorites were Ranger/Marksman/Bladedancer, Pyro/Elementalist/Archon or Chloromancer (added survivability), and Shaman/Druid/Warden.

I'm kind of hesitant to play a cleric as I got tired of being a healer in other MMOs and I'm afraid thats all I'd be used for again. Healing is boring.

I couldn't get into the warrior classes as they just seemed to die so quickly, despite the heavy armor.

argh...46 minutes left...

I was just reading up on it and apparently Rift uses the same Gamebyro engine as Warhammer. Fuck. That. Shit.

Eh?  Engine looks pretty good to me, and performs well.  I have all settings maxed except for 8x AF and no AA, no performance hiccups even when jumping in huge groups for rifts.

is it just me or do the graphics look worse now than when they were in beta, particularly character and npc graphics?

edit: durr! it's a new install so I have to re-do the settings.

question: I got the collector's edition (digital) so I have that soulstone thinger. I assume that's a 1 time use?

Oh and right now I'm on the Corthana server, playing a Ranger/Marksman/Bard named Esmerelda. Gimme a shout out if you're on there.
I started a few other characters but don't have as much fun as I do with the Ranger/Marksman class.

It's also the same game engine as that used in Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3, and Sid Meier's Civ 4, among other games. Shouldn't you give the game a chance (which you could have done on the open beta week) before dismissing it wholesale?

When a developer licenses a game engine, there is a 99.99% chance they modify it to suit their needs. The important thing is what twists the developer has added to this game and whether it is fun to play.

Then I would recommend against a cleric. I have a cleric with a heal spec, a tank spec, and a melee DPS spec. All are effective and have been used when doing dungeons with friends and guildmates, but when grouping with randoms I always stick with the heal spec. The reason for this is pretty simple - for most of the game almost any problem can be solved by simply throwing more healing at it. Even the dungeons that incorporate DPS race mechanics can simply be outhealed (up until the mid 30's). The cleric DPS and tank specs are good, but they won't keep a bad group going.

You'd probably have more fun with a mage or a rogue, as both can provide very good healing support if needed (Chloromancer, Bard) but you won't be expected to do so unless you volunteer. So you get the best of the both worlds being able to switch to support for terrible groups, but doing other stuff when you want to.

I'm currently level 13, Warrior calling and specced Champion/Reaver/Warlord. I'm using strictly 2H weapons (love them) but I find the DPS is lacking. Maybe it's just me, or poor items or both but my strongest attack is barely doing 100 dmg.

My weapon is really bad too so it can't help (4.9 DPS 2Hander...).

Anyways, done my forst Warfront yesterday, it's chaotic in there. Black Garden it's called. Lots of people inthere and the targetting is very important and a little hard at first. But TAB is your friend. I still managed to end up with the most kills/deathblows and 3rd in damage output. It was fun but I have a feeling it'll get repoetitive quickly.

Next step, first dungeon...something of the Fae?! I got some quests in there and can'T wait to experience the group dungeons.

I tried champion/riftblade/something in beta and it was weak as hell.
I also started a Paragon/something last night and it was weak as hell too.

I tried out a Stormcaller and I had to blast enemies like 4 or 5 times with my spell to kill them compared to like 3 times with Pyro. Some classes are really weak compared to others.

I'll continue on this way till i'm bored. I really want to plya this toon till 50 so I can really see if it's gonna stay "weak" or not. I must say that most of the talents early on are not really DPS boosters but more about +hit% and +dmg% (Champion), DoT (Reaver) and auras (Warlord) but nothing groundbreaking. I'm currently questing to get the Riftblade soul so maybe i'll switch Reaver with it for my main DPS build.

In groups (rifts, Warfronts, etc) my contribution/damage seem to be in the upper half so I guess it's just a matter of perception.

All in all, although a bit repetitive at first, it got enough appeal to keep me glued to the screen for at least the 3 months sub I bought.

FYI, all the game servers are down for updates, etc. (I guess they are feeding the hamsters some extra pellets of...well, whatever hamsters eat) before the game launches at 10AM Pacific. Trion is adding 31 new servers - 19 of them for North America - for the expected crowds.

One smart thing they are doing is bringing up the new servers an hour before they restart the beta and headstart servers. I'm not sure that's going to be enough, though. They might have been better off simply locking the headstart servers to new players for 24 hours.

In other news, I'm still loving the game but on the fence whether or not to stick with the Faeblight server. I love the "old-school" community concept on Fae, but I simply don't have the time and inclination to sit through long queues to log in (most of my play is prime time: 7PM to 11PM on weekdays). Especially since I intend to raid at some point, and I simply cannot structure my work scheduled to leave early so I can race home to log in two hours ahead of any raid start time. Bah.

I feel your "pain". I'm looking for another server too but not knowing what is the community like of the other side, it's making it harder to just switch over there.

My play time is similar than yours (4:30pm to midnight on weekdays) so coming home and having to wait hours in queue is bleh.

If you find a nice server, lemme know, i'll move over there.

Especially PvP warfronts - lulz.

Well not completely lulz. With so many ranged rogues and DPS clerics addicted to that knockback attack running around in Black Garden and the Codex, even 1 player actually healing is enough to turn the balance of an entire match right now.

I'm going to check out Estrael, which seems to be the growing home for the Faeblight spillover crowd. I reserved the name "Avogadro" there a few days ago just in case.

Defiant or Guardian?

EDIT: Estrael seems to be a really nice server from what I read on it's forum. Friendly and helpful. Might be my new home.

Honestly, I'm not too worried about the queues. Friday/Sat/Sunday queues were ridiculous at like 2 hours. But last night I tried at like 6PM pacific time and it was down to 45 minutes (prime playing time). Honestly I would give it a week or two before you move unless you really have an issue with it?

One thing I have to say is that I (mostly) like the way the RIFT devs write. Tool tips, patch notes, etc. They write them like they're designed to be read by normal people, not programmers that will ooh and ahh at the various patch changes they put through or convoluted statistics on a spell or skill. Hell, I am a programmer and that stuff still gets annoying.

Ahh funny. I was telling my friend it looked and felt a lot like Warhammer. I do think the game itself is hella better though. But the look and feel is very close imo. Better animations on the avatars than warhammer.

My character on Faeblight is a Defiant, and I had planned to stick with Defiant if I move, but it's not a 100% sure choice. I tried out the Guardian side during beta (got a mage to L28) and liked it too.

@pontifex: Corthana was one of my options, but I opted to investigate Estrael because as Rhezuss says the community seemed pretty mature, helpful, and nice - like Faeblight. I don't role-play myself (although I'm totally cool with people who choose to) but tend to be attracted to RP servers because of the community quality.

Didn't play as much today due to RL stuff, partly through 31 though. I'm really liking the bard, I am incredibly hard to kill and usually just ignore people attackin me in warfronts and just stand there while I'm doing my own thing helping the team out. I quest using the bard soul as well, the lower dps from the other rogue souls does make it feel slower at times. But my survivability is great and I've found pulling a handful of mobs at a time and just using my AOE coda works out great, I can kill 4 a little bit slower then I can kill 1. If I didn't have my G15 keyboard though I'm not sure I would keep playing the class simply cause of the motifs. I have a macro setup to play all 5 of them with one button. Having to keep refreshing them every 30 secs or so could become a real pain in the ass, in PvE I only use them with multiple mobs/group/rifts things, in PvP they are on the entire time as they should be.

Even though charts don't tell the whole story, every warfront I play in, at the end I check most healing done and I am normally 2-4 times higher then the next person, I don't know if this has anything to do with that but I also win around 95% of the warfronts I play as well (could be luck and nothing to do with me).

Not enough people seem to be willing to play support and just want to do lots of dmg.

I'm enjoying the game though quite a bit so far though.

Question for those who are playing, I'm trying to gauge how money making is, I'm currently 31 with 37 plat, I think that is average but I am just curious. I have runecrafting and mining, so I runebreak all the greens and stuff I get and I smelt and sell the bars as well as cloth I get.

Kaotik,
How are you using your macros? I have a G15 too and can't seem to get them to work. I've never used the macros in a game before.

I'm trying to set up a macro that will play my 1st motif and then attack using a 1.5 second skill. But once I get more motifs I's like to set it up like you do. Kind of reminds me of "twisting" with a paladin in DAoC.
