It blue screened my laptop

To be fair it did give me a warning that my drivers were out of date when I initially launched it up, but this is pretty ridiculous. Laptop will still power on, but nothing comes up on the screen at all. I've plugged it into an external monitor and it will load up on there, but theres tons of lines and other artifacts all over the screen. Ran out of time this morning but I'm gonna update the drivers when I get home and pray it didn't destroy my graphics card.

If you are trying Rift for the first time in Beta 5, your experience will not be as good as it would have been in Beta 4. Part of this beta phase is stress-testing the servers. Do not be surprised to experience lag, random crashes or disconnects, and a flood of new players stealing your quest mobs and generally acting clueless.

However, Trion is not fiddling while Rome burns. They opened up something like 20 new servers to handle the new players, and have already published at least one significant patch/hotfix to get things running more smoothly.

Despite the flaky playing conditions, I played for about 4 hours last night and had a lot of fun. I'm still in for a preorder, since I now know for sure that my new rig will run it flawlessly.

I didn't have any hopes of this game being good but, while it really is more of the same, I've been having fun for the first couple of days. I'm not to the point where I'll plunk down some cash but I like what I've seen so far.

Finally I can get the ranger soul! Which I did already.

All I have to say now that I've tried messing around with every rogue build, there really is only ONE great build, some okay builds, and a bunch of worthless souls.

Best build by far is....

Bard + Ranger. Add any third soul you want for flavor. Marksman or Sab for dps work well.

Why bard + ranger? Well let's see...

As a ranger you get a pet that is damn tough, holds agro, instantly charges into battle, and deals nice dps. You get an instant cast health over time ability for your pet, and a few decent buffs and passive talents.

As a bard you get... buffs and heals. With buffs you can make that simple pet about as strong as any warrior with almost comparable DPS. With bard healing, you can keep that pet and yourself alive indefinitely. The bard and ranger souls also deal out nice dps on their own. You get a ton of abilities that attack your target that can not miss, be parried, dodged, or blocked. Which means that no matter how high the monster is that you are fighting, you will always be doing damage and healing at the same time.

Add in Sab for some more non missing DPS with charges and detonate + some nie AOE dps, or marksman for slightly more single target dps than the sab when you don't miss and you have the perfect rogue package. I prefer the sab because of the AoE sticky bomb with the bard speed buff lets you get away from tight spots if you ever get in one.

In all seriousness, it's not much different than a necro + cloramancer + pyromancer combo for mages. Just less squishy and more consistent DPS over all while healing. Less burst healing though, but more buffs.

I've tried all the other combinations of rogue souls out there, and this is by far the best for PVE right now. Great solo and very useful in groups.


Unfortunately, too many of the rogue souls are absolute trash still even in this beta. Riftstalkers, nightblades, blade dancers, and assassins are just so underpowered compared to the other souls, there is no reason to main any of these souls.

As for warrior builds here's some of my personal favs...

Best tank against physical damage is: Paladin/Reaver/Warlord
Best all around tanks are either: Pal/Reaver/Void or War/Reaver/Void
Best melee dps in the game is: Paragon/Champ/Riftblade (maining any of these three is great for dps)


You really can not go wrong with any of those builds for warrior there. It's silly how strong warriors in this game are.


I haven't messed with mages too much, but they are pretty powerful with most of their souls. Some of the mage souls overlap a little too much though like getting elementalist, warlock, and necro souls all at once is not really a good idea. Most mages pick pyro for dps, clora for healing/support, and one of the other souls for flavor (most of the rest have pets of some sort). The order picked isn't that big of a deal. You can go full support and be one of the best healers in the game as a cloramancer, or go full pyro and be one of the best dpsers in the game, or go full pet class to make solo PVE easier while still being a nice jack of all trades character.

Clerics I haven't touched at all at this point though. But I do know that most of the souls are pretty darn powerful no matter what combination chosen.

I made one of these last night after I found out that bards are in the game. Bard + ranger will be insanely popular I'd imagine. I did bard/ranger/nightblade and it seems pretty good, though I'm going to focus on bard the most since I like support classes more.

If I get the game in retail, I'm probably going to play a cleric role as a primary. I haven't touched them in beta really and I don't think I want to spoil myself or suffer from burnout by doing so.

Problem with nightblade is that it doesn't really add much. Actually, it is really weak and unarguably the worst soul in the game right now. It's just trash. If you want stealth, go assassin since assassin stealth later becomes a toggle ability and not on a timer. If you want range damage, go marksmen or ranger or play a mage. If you want melee damage... play a warrior. Nightblades try to do this blend of dot damage, range damage, melee damage, stealth thingie and end up doing NOTHING right. The only reason people picked it previously was for the energy gaining talent which is no longer there and really no longer needed with beta 5 release that fixed energy problems rogues had.

It seriously needs a remake in my opinion.

Played a little bit last night. Impressed with what I saw. Story is pretty interesting as well. I am leaning 60/40 towards a pre order but we'll see. Will be able to play more this evening.

Shhhh - don't give it away! :ninja: It seems like hardly anyone is playing a warrior on my server (I'm on Wolfsbane, Defiant side) and I don't want the word getting out on how awesome they are.

Seriously though, you've nailed my two specs. I have Paladin/Reaver/Warlord for tanking and Champion/Paragon/X for melee DPS while solo leveling. Right now X is Beastmaster because I wanted to try having a pet, but I did have Riftblade in there for a while. The Champion/Paragon combo is so strong though, you could have almost anything else as your third soul and do just fine.

I'd imagine that most people are just fooling around. There's been plenty of talk on my server on how warriors are destroying everything. They'll be plenty popular come release time.

Warriors, clerics, and mages are damn powerful in this game. Rogues are the most populous though because it tends to be one of the better, if not best, pvp class of all other games...

So when people are used to how rogues fare in other games and come here, there is a bit of shock. Many haven't tried other classes yet to see how bad rogue compare to the other 3.

The only rogue soul that does well in pvp is the saboteur. That is only because in group fights, no one notices the charges being built up on them as the charges themselves do no damage. Once the charges are detonated though.... With a lucky crit for both the detonation ability and all the charges the damage was insane. The crit changes have scaled that back though somewhat. A good sab in group pvp could stay out of the way building charges and not being attacked before blowing someone up. The other rogue classes in pvp and pve (with the exception I noted above) are really lackluster.

Loving my Judicator/Shaman so far. Good damage, heals on attack, massive self buffs and some decent self and group heals (plus I get some damage shields and crowd control later).

Amazing for soloing, but I worry about PvP viability. Primarily that I'll be stuck between "Not tough enough" and "Not bursty enough". We shall see.

If you level up to 25, give Deepstrike Mines a try. The boss fights are a bit more challenging.

Got into Beta yesterday and been messing with a Cleric tank build. Something like this.

I really feel that right now people are trying to do too much with their builds and while I understand wanting to be able to solo well everyone I know in this beta is basically saying. Well I do good damage I can tank and heal myself with a pet. Well thats 4 very different playstyles and I doubt you'll be much use in a dungeon with me.

Looking at my cleric build I focused on what I needed to tank and then filling in DPS talents as needed. Things like Hammer of Virtue I only grabbed to get Dedication and because of a lack of anything good left in Shaman or Purifier. I took Purifier as my third tree only for the shield spell.

I see so many people building like this (I just picked random talents FYI) and saying they can do it all. Maybe in solo play but in some of the tougher dungeons I've been doing these do it alls do poor damage can't heal and die quickly. The only plus tends to be they bring some buffs but I'm bringing a couple buffs as well and doing a job.

I have found some quality players in the upper levels of the beta and we have been grouping together and doing quite well I'm on the fence about this game. I feel like they had 2 really good ideas in the selecting your own talent trees from a couple and the active events like rifts and such but then they shoehorned it into your stale WoW clone.

Had they not directly copied everything except those two aspects from WoW I could see a future in this game but as it stands I don't see it. It will forever be known a WoW clone unless they differentiate themselves more which I think its a bit late for.

As far as it being a WoW clone, what do you expect? Every MMO that wasn't a WoW clone since WoW released has failed. Even Bioware's The Old Republic looks to be a WoW clone set in a different universe. Blizzard came up with a winning formula for how an MMO should be done, and companies are emulating it.

part of it is similar to warhammer, the closing of rifts. the only pet peeve i have so far with that is the leaderboard doesn't show you the 'final score'

and i do not know how the loot is determined by it.


most players in beta got an email with extra vip keys for future events. if any of you wants to give it a try, just pm. the download is p2p and about 7 gig.

I expect a original thought in a game. The counter to what you said is that lots of WoW clones failed as well.

you can set flags.. and there are also 'battleground' you can queue up to pvp.

i did it once, it was about a 9 minutes queue. as a defiant, probably would be faster with the other faction (forgot the name)

I want innovation. FFXI rocked (Hell I'm considering Resubbing right now), SWG rocked, EVE is still awesome and they didn't copy WoW to do it. No WoW clone has actually succeeded.

If I'm considering an MMO and its a rehash of WoW with one or 2 cool new features than theres no point in playing it when I can play WoW and KNOW the game will be there in 6 months.

Blizzard came up with a winning formula yes but someone else can come up with another.
