I canceled my sub the other day before it renewed for June.
lots of people that played a lot in my guild are now not even logging in and i just got bored of running the same instances over and over.

The game was fun for the leveling to 50 and even after 50 running dungeons with a good group was fun.

They made it too easy to level and don't have enough variety at 50 to keep me interested.

After I tried the Rift trial I figured I'd try the WoW trial, but it is slow as SHIT downloading and installing so I looked at some Youtube videos and Rift and Wow are like...identical twins. Group members go in the same spot, quests, the hotbars, literal clones.

So...does WoW actually offer anything cool that Rift does not, that I should do a 4 day download for it? (Nothing else takes more than a 7 hour night of downloading even for similar filesizes)

Both games are too easy to level your toon, in my opinion. As you stated there are vast similarities between the two games. Rift gives you the ability to do away w/ alts somewhat (but not entirely). Rift also has graphics that are well beyond what WoW can offer.

I believe WoW has a better soundtrack.

The leveling experience in Rift was sort of weird. Leveling my main at launch was good fun and it definitely felt fast. I would have been OK with them nerfing xp gains by 10% just to stretch it out a little. However, my opinion has changed now that I tried leveling alts. At least for me, that feels like it takes forever since the leveling content never changes. It's also way less fun with the leveling zones more or less empty unless an invasion is happening. Forget about group quests or doing the "normal" dungeon in the zone at a level-appropriate time.

Well, at least with Everquest you could level up in other race newbie areas.

Of course, that became easier to do after Plane of Knowledge came out.

Honestly, forget 10% experience nerf as suggested. Drop it down by 30%. Levelling was just way too fast.

Some of the Rift dungeons were fun but there were not enough of them and some of them just felt kind of small and simple. Keep in mind I'm used to sprawling large dungeons from EQ1 like Upper and Lower Guk, Solusek A and B, Chardok, Sebilis. And those were just from the original game and first expansion. There are a lot of great dungeons in the later expansions as well.

Rift dungeon grinding got pretty repetitive considering most people just build a role for maximum AE damage. There wasn't a lot of variety until you got to bosses. Contrast that with EQ1 where half the mobs will run when low on health and most mobs are powerful enough that you can't just run in and AE groups down. You had to be aware of healer mobs when pulling multiple mobs and wizard mobs actually gated.

Again, aside from bosses, mobs just didn't seem as interactive and "real" in Rift as in such an old game like EQ1. In EQ1 you'd better learn who the cleric mobs are because they will drop a Complete Heal, wizard mobs will gate and likely bring a train, and many mobs will run when low on health. There's no easy button.

The original EQ1 development team also did a great job on skill/spell upgrades in the original game as you leveled up. In a game like Rift (I have almost no experience in WoW) you wanted to get to 50 ASAP to maximize your abilities because your character didn't "feel" complete until then. I think this is partially the fault of the multi-class system where you had the ability to pick and choose your skill set but a build which is good for levelling may not be the one you want to run in a dungeon. In EQ1 you could feel your character growing stronger as you leveled. You still had your core abilities and those never changed. Only get stronger as you leveled. Granted you didn't get certain core abilities until your late teens in EQ1. It was still early enough that your character didn't feel stifled or incomplete. Again, I think this is due to the stricter control on skill/spell gain.

I play there too.

You on Defiant or Guardian?

Although my computer crapped out on me. I suspect the motherboard has been going on me for quite a while but I've been too lazy to change it. It finally crapped out on me and won't even boot from my Windows install disc. I think it might have killed my WD Raptor which lost its partition, shows CRC errors, and now has issues formatting it. RMA time.

I've been fairly monotonous in my droning on and on about a EQ1 w/ updated gfx and interface. Keep everything else the same. Let me work for it.

I think I've hit "Officially Bored with Rift" as of today. I have no desire to try to raid, or level up more characters or whatnot. Time to drop my account on craigslist and see if anybody wants it.

I'd love to be on the design team that gets to discuss the next EQ. It would be so fun, what did EQ do right, what did EQ2 do right (...), what has happened in the MMO genre as a whole, where is it going, how do you keep the classical feel while giving people things they expect from this day and age. How do you make it addicting. What do we do with the lore. I think I'd have more fun working on the game than actually playing it....

My guild is going through serious drama right now and there's a decent chance it might either split up or simply disband. With transfers coming up, this might be a chance to make a fresh start on a new shard, so just in case....

Does anyone have thoughts on a busy/full PvE shard for a Defiant player (I already know about Wolfsbane)? My main is a raid-geared warrior with 164 toughness and 229 hit (mix of T1/T2/T3 gear including a couple of GSB items). I also have a death resist setup for plant tanking in the Greenscale fight and RoS, and in a pinch can do mediocre DPS. I have experience tanking all T2s, raid and expert rifts, and the first three bosses in Greenscale.

I'd prefer a shard that has a lot of East Coast time activity (basically 7PM to 10:30PM Eastern time which equates to 4PM to 7:30PM Pacific/server time).

i'm going to guess that you'll only be able to move to low pop or medium pop servers to try to balance things out.

Good point. Now that I think about it, a better way to go about it is to find (or organize!) a guild that's raids/plays during East Coast prime time, and transfer to the server where they plan to set up.

so, Rift is on sale for $9.99 for the next couple days... think it's worth buying just as something to waste time with for the next couple months?

my living room is a bitch to cool during the summer time, which means I spend a lot of my weekend locked inside my spare room/home office, so I tend to PC game during the summer months and play my 360 during the fall/winter/spring.

If you want good gfx and a leveling process that is largely accelerated and on auto-pilot - than yes. Also, if you enjoy being able to do almost whatever you want - than yes !
