My ATI 5850 works just dandy... The biggest factor for the framerate is the "Lighting Quality"... Once you hit a certain number its starts to smooth edges of shadows, and thats when you lose alot of framerate. We have near identical machines. I can see if I can export my settings so you can see what I'm running and I can give you feedback on the FPS I have so you can compare.

yeah, that would be awesome. I see you're running a 64bit OS, maybe that makes the difference? I am pretty sure my lighting quality is turned way down but i can check that.

I think I already addressed this a little, but Riftstalker/Reaver is one of the highest DPS pairings in the game and brutally effective in PvP due to flamespear spam. I have a warrior that hit 80k damage in a WF at level 13 which is something that my mage has yet to do in the low 20's. I still prefer a healing role on a cleric, but if you want to deal consistent and strong instant cast ranged magic damage you can't beat a Riftstalker/Reaver build.

holy crap. Best i've reached with Champ/Warlord or Champ/Void is 30k....and even that was late teens. 80k is unreal, i never see that even in 20-29 warfronts.

I did try champ/riftstalker in beta and honestly felt the flamespear spam to be really cheap. I don't like playing that way and just used the flamespear stuff to take down fleeing enemies or soften em before bull rush.

up to 22 with my ranger/marksman/bard and other than rifts, it's been all solo.

Hoping to do some instances soon with the guild I joined, stuff I can't do myself.

Any suggestions on a server that isn't full of gibbering retards? Even the RP servers are bad, and I guess the naming guidelines were just a gentle suggestion based on what I saw.

The communities on both Faeblight and Estrael are pretty good. I started on Fae, and moved to Estrael because the queue times were too long. You're going to get your share of idiots no matter what - especially in the newbie zones - but both servers seem to be a step above in player quality.

Brandonb have you looked into your settings at all?

I switched to lighting quality 3 and have seen a decent improvement. I also updated every driver I could find and shut down every extraneous program. Still drops to low/mid teens in the largest of the rift battles but Meridian is more comfortable now. Lighting is actually better now, darker but more real somehow.

Really enjoying the champion/void knight right now. level 31 so I just learned Titan Strike. Kinda makes the other finishing moves pointless

Went to Scarwood Reach but i'm thinking about going back to the Gorge and finishing everything there.

I joined a guild for like 10 minutes then gquit...I can't handle being guilded with people I don't know. Be cool to get an Anandtech guild going. I'm on Harrow, anyone else?

It's all aoe healing though isn't it? I healed a dungeon on my bard and it went ok, but there were times where I really felt like I needed a direct heal on the tank.

Later on a bard gets a finisher which can heal. I use that in PVP quite frequently. I do my normal song that leeches health and gives to raid building up points then click the finisher for the bigger heal.

Hi... I did look at my settings but I could not find a pattern in which would make my computer run consistantly. In some areas I maintain 60 fps, but other areas I do not. I believe it's related to the number of players in an area. Sanctum was slowing down to about 30fps. Rifts can sometimes be higher or lower depending on the number of people. I could not find a way to export my settings, but I will post a screenshot of what I found as "best bang for the buck."

My HD4890 is not agreeing with RIFT. I get a very odd issue (and looking at the forums I'm not alone) where the card stops sending a signal to the monitor and the monitor goes into power-saving mode. Only a hard reset will fix it. Anyone else having that issue?

I'm thinking about picking this up in a day or two. I've already decided to go cleric since healing is my thing and it seems to be the one out of the four that leans towards healing as its main function overall.

Is there an Anandtech guild or a server that most of you are trending towards? I have a friend that might also be trying out the game alongside me and would be nice to be somewhere where I can at least associate with some people.

No AT guild yet and we're somewhat scattered...I know Avogadro and me are on Estrael (but I'm Guardian and he's Defiant) and some are on Faeblight while others on Harrow...

It could be cool to start a AT guild though.

Just hit 47 yesterday. Having a blast. I need to get into a bigger guild though. My guild is currently like 10 people and it's not that great (although everyone in it is awesome).

Yah, but you can't always have it up to 5 combo points when the tank needs it most. You can use the ability "Rift" to give you 5 combo points if it doesn't miss since "Rift" is still considered an attack. But you can only use this ability once every 3 minutes.

You can later pop "Virtuoso" as an ability and spam for 15 seconds any of your bard finishers which includes Coda of Restoration. This is an oh shit button and if you can't take down in 15 seconds what you need to, then your are screwed after the 15 seconds like you would have been before.

Bards are NOT main healers for a group. They are a support soul only. Now, if you have 2 or three bards in a group, you may not need a main healer from the sheer collective combined HOT power that adding multiple bards can do.

Bards in groups are primarily designed to make everyone else do what they do better. Tanks can tank better. Healers can heal better with less stress. DPS can dish out more damage. This is the power of the bard class. On top of this you add a bit of healing and possibly some decent DPS as well. It is literally the only "jack of all trades, master of none" soul in this game. It is not the best healer, it is not the best dps, it can't tank really, and it is not exactly the best buffer (archon is better than bard with permanent toggle buffs instead).

However, what the bard does well is give a little of everything to a group to shore up any weaknesses. A good bard in a good group will allow that group to plow through content it couldn't do before. I know as I am speaking from first hand knowledge. Also, there are plenty of really bad bards out there that simply do not know how the class works in groups. I am talking 40+ bards as well as the lower level ones.

For example, I was in a group with another rogue, we both had bard setups and tank setups. I switched over to tank and he stayed bard. It was getting ROUGH because he almost never kept up his buffs, his heals and dps were really bad, and it was just not going good.

So we switched as I am an excellent bard. It was smooth sailing from there then on, even if he was even crappier at tanking than me. At least I knew how to hold AOE agro all the time as a riftstalker and could keep my shields up. He didn't, but that didn't matter. Because I was the better bard, the group was in far less danger when something slipped past his agro to beat on someone else, or if he forgot to use his finisher to put up his defenses in a timely manner.

Alright, I've got a friend that's going to sponsor me into Rift. That and I just cancelled my LOTRO account since Turbine refuses to respond to my ticket and unban my account (it was banned because of the recent account hacks and they thought my account was compromised, which it wasn't, but I jumped through their hoops anyway and it's been a week since I did what I was supposed to and told them about it asking to reinstate my account).

With that out of the way - Is there a preferred vendor to purchase Rift from? (ie: bonuses, goodies, etc.)

What is this "sponsor" you speak of? Sort of like a referral reward program?

I'm personally going to order the digital version from Amazon, although I'm not sure if I'll get the regular or collector's edition yet. The digital collector's edition gives you a mount, larger default backpack, and a pet. A review says the mount can be used from level 1 on any and all characters you create in the game, otherwise it takes quite a few levels to get one. I'm thinking the extra $10 might be worth it in case the game takes its hold on me and I want to create a couple different toons.

No, a friend that usually drags me along to play multiplayer games. I rarely pay for subscription games, but am willing to play them. So I have friends that hate to play games without people they know. Hence, they pay for my sub.

Actually, after looking, Direct2Drive has 20% off all rpgs right now (including Rift) making it $39.96 for standard and $49.98 for the collectors edition.

If you guys are going to buy it, get the CE. It is totally worth it for the mount and the larger bag alone. You can use the mount at any level, but you have to get it from the mailbox, you won't see the first mailbox till you are out of the noob area and are lvl 6, but that doesn't take more then an hour tops to do. The bag space is just great, as I've been lvl'n up, believe me my inventory was close to full most the time between quest items/crafting/gathering stuff and my bank was full all the time too lol.
Also the mount saves a bunch of cash early on, if you save your money while lvln you could afford to buy the first mount (the same speed one you get from the CE) at around lvl 15-17 iirc.

The rune you get is pretty cool too imo. It has unlimited charges so you get some extra HP for free applying it to your weapon(s).

Yeah, the CE is totally worth it. Saves you a lot of money early on too since you don't have to buy the mount with in-game currency.

I've had the game for a little over a week now, been having a great time with it. I'm playing an assassin character right now - I think he's level 21, playing on Harrow (RP-PVP server). I don't have a lot of time to play - typically just a couple hours a day, but I'm not in any hurry to reach 50.

The rifts are a really nice touch. I like the public quest idea in Warhammer, but you had to seek them out and those areas were typically pretty empty. With the rifts, they bring the public quests to you which makes it a lot more fun. The epic rift items in each zone are pretty awesome as well, so that really encourages people to participate in zone events when they happen.

Moved into Scarlet Gorge for leveling/questing, and went from 25% of the way into L30 to dinging in the space of one night. How, you ask?

Rift Invasions! These are structured a little differently than in the newbie zones. There, you have a combination of protecting wardstones, beating back invasions, and closing rifts. In Scarlet Gorge, it's all defense. When the rifts open, they spawn nonstop swarms of invading mobs at the targeted wardstones. I'm talking something like 30-40 mobs at once. Each invasion force is one boss plus 5-6 underlings, and you need to defeat 50 invasion forces to progress the event, so closing rifts is counterproductive.

It was a lot of fun to stand our ground vs. the invading hordes (we lost and had to retake our wardstone a couple of times, so it's not as simple as "sit there and AoE"), then make one ride to track down the big boss. It was very lucrative too. In addition to leveling, I got something like 800 planarite, a nice assortment of planar focus stones, a couple of blue-quality sourceshards, and a bunch of consumables.

Interesting times with us sharing the zone with the Guardians. For the first zone event I did, the boss spawned on the Defiant half of the map, so we pretty much dealt with it ourselves until some Guardians showed up and helped take it from 20%ish to dead. It so happened that a bunch of them were flagged, so a big PvP battle broke out afterwards - but only after the boss was dead. Business before pleasure after all.

I really like having a bard in a group, but this is right. Very good support and the AOE healing is great for keeping a whole party up (like on the last two bosses in KB), but unless your group is way overleveled you will probably want a cleric or a chloro to MH the tank.
