My IS always made decent money, and I always used the 122.

Were you premium then?

Or maybe the extra damage makes enough extra credits to offset the shell cost. I suppose I'll find out for myself in the next couple of days, hopefully.

I ran the 122 and premium on IS as well. Always made money, each and every single game. But then I was pretty good with the IS.

I was always net positive with or without premium. By net positive I mean I made enough on even modest victories to offset the occasional loss of credits. But, I liked the IS and did fairly well with it. If you suck with it and don't run premium you will probably break even or be close to breaking even.

I haven't been premium in a while and I believe I am even breaking even in my IS3.

I only lose credits on my t-50 with nonprem. Have obj 704, is-4, kv, panther, 3001DB... always make money on those tanks unless i miss like 3 shots in a row.

Really? I can easily lose credits with my T-50, but with a fairly decent game I rarely do. It certainly isn't making much, maybe a thousand or two on good games, but it is earning.

with prem on a t-50 i never lose credits. I don't have a prem account right now and in a bad game I can lose 2-3k pretty easily.... This tank can't kill anything big and scouting just doesn't give you a lot of money/exp if there is nothing hitting the stuff you've sighted. With most of your teammates from dumbfuckistan sometimes i'm lucky to get 500 exp on a win.

Hi guys, I just downloaded the game and will hopefully play my first match tonight Before that happens, I have a few questions from the pov of a huge noob. I've had a lot of FPS & RTS experience, dunno if either of those are relevant here. Anyway...

1) Does my nation choice matter? I've heard that generally, soviet = beefy, german = snipers (powerful gun?), american = fast/maneuverable. Is that about right? Is one nation particularly good to start on, or just pick whatever looks the coolest? haha
2) Does the initial nation choice limit your future choices? Like if I get mid/high tier tanks w/the soviets, will I be starting from 0 if I want to try german?
3) I don't want to get into the game and be totally worthless to my team. Are there primers on general overall strategy & map layouts or should I just learn as I go?
4) I know there's a match-making system so I'm not fighting Tiger IIs in my POS-mobile, but even then I assume that in the low tier/light tanks, I should be scouting or going after artillery or something like that? Does that mean running out ahead/away from the main group? Any tips?

If there are good noob guides or things i should read, I can do that (esp if these questions have all been addressed in this thread, tho I'm never sure what info in this thread is relevant b/c it sounds like the game has changed a lot). But I didn't want to spend a ton of time searching/reading when I could be playing instead, lol.

elcs has a few guides up for all the tank classes. You can look through it.

The nation choices are fairly distinctive. Each nation's lines (medium, heavy, TD) are distinctive and are very different from one another.

Germans in general have faster firing, accurate guns that don't do a ton of damage.
Russians have big heavy inaccurate but powerful guns. Slow loading.
american I never played so can't tell you how their guns are. But their tanks in general are fairly maneuverable but have no armor.

2) yes. Each nation is unique. Exp you earn from one nation will not carry to another nation (unless you convert them to free exp). But engines, modules, ammo etc are not cross-compatible.

3) Enjoy the game. Learn as you go. By the time you get to tier 4-5 you'll know the map layouts better, and then you can start learning roles of each individual tanks. Before that its just everyone rushing out for a big brawl.

4) Some little tanks are very dangerous when left unchecked but in general if you're in a light tank you should be looking for the artillery. You can be a forward spotter as well, but don't expect to live long. If you're spotting, make sure your buddies have a good firing line to the tank you're spotting. Otherwise they'll just vanish off the map when your tank blows up.

In general, relax and just play. Get a feel for the game.

Few tips:

- If you can, get a premium account. More money and lvl faster really helps in the beginning to get past the shitmobiles.
- past tier 4, train your crew to 75% if possible. At this point you will keep your tanks long enough that having a 50% crew will really make your life miserable.
- Don't fire wildly. Firing reveals your position, when you shoot you want to make sure you hit the guy. Irrelevant when you're in a tiny tank but in a big tank its important.
- Use high explosive rounds when you can't penetrate the guy reliably from where you're at. This will become important as you start fighting heavy tanks like the KV series.
- USE COVER. A tank in the open is a dead tank.

Ah, that might explain it. I don't use my T-50 as much of a scout. I usually hang back a bit, and then go arty/TD hunting. If I run across a lone heavy I'll probably play with them a bit - if I can get a few shots through I'll keep it up until a teammate arrives, if not I'll just speed away before I mess up and they get a lucky shot in.

Found the elcs guides. Didn't know he had a whole gaming website but I'll look through that info before getting into the game. That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for to help me get started.

Fast firing + accurate. I guess I'm going for Germany then. Wish real-life germany had made more use of sloped armor though :/ I know that was a bit of an issue for them IRL; does that translate into problems in-game as well? And is there any reason not to start w/germans?

I don't think I'll get a premium account right away. Gotta at least see if I like the game or not before putting money into it. Though getting 1 month of premium as a trial isn't that expensive.

Last question: after i get acquainted w/the game, is there an AT group that would want someone driving a POS? haha

edit: any suggested mods? I saw elcs uses several UI changes. And I heard about re-skins that highlight vulnerable regions, which seems like a great learning tool.

edit2: how do you know when to upgrade your tank vs save up to get to the next tier?

If you are on the US Server - join group ATOT (password: moomoo).

Suggested mods are up to you.

Usually by the time you unlock the xp for the next tier you should have enough money. People usually go Tracks > Turret > Gun > Engine > Radio > Next Tank. Tanks have weight limits and you usually have to get tracks first before you can get a better turret or gun. I usually research all my modules before I unlock the next tank since most can be used on other tanks. It is a lot easier to get xp on a upgraded tank vs a stock tank.

I must admit, I bought gold today during the veterans day special (thank you to all the vets). I picked up a Type 59 since I enjoyed mediums during beta and I'm grinding the heavies for free tanks / garage slots right now.

Player Tips (not really):

- Always rush into battle alone, to beat the other tanks on your team before they can kill the enemy tanks. This has more glory than fighting with a group sharing credit.

- If your team is losing, insult it. This encourages them to improve for next time.

- If you and another teammate are capping the enemy base, shoot them, and you get a medal for getting all the cap points.

- If you're a light tank, hide in the back - you can't kill the large enemies.

- Upgraded guns are to be avoided, because the sells are more expensive.

- A great way to get easy experience is join a battle, then alt tab or go do something else for a bit.

- Stay out in the open, obstacles can get in the way of your aim.

- If you get shot, the enemy is likely 'hacking'. Tell them you know what they're up to in chat to encourage them to stop.

I'm considering grabbing some gold now as well, for the Type 59 and a decent number of garage slots. Unfortunately premium tanks don't come with their own slots (pointless tax on those already paying for your game, but I digress), and as I don't have any free ones that won't be needed on the grind for free tanks/garage slots (KV, KV-3, IS-4, T34, T30), and as garage slots occasionally go half-off... I would just end up with a bunch of gold burning a hole in my pocket, as I would have literally nothing to spend it on.

It seems odd paying money to a Russian company that will in turn contribute to a U.S. veterans association, but I fell for it too. I needed a reason to buy more gold to get premium and this was enough.

I might even convert some XP to throw the better 122mm on my IS. I really hate that tank. The matchmaker hates me - 36% win rate with 31% survival rate. WTH? My team always seems to suck when I play that tank.

A quick switch mod enabler can be found here, but for many mods you have to recreate the normal folder structure (hint: disable ALL mods before applying any update!): http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products-jsgme.html

Hitbox skins can be found here. People frown upon them, but really they only give you an advantage when you're new: http://www.koreanrandom.com/world-of-tanks/skins/hitzones

A hugely fun mod that adds damage over the enemy/friendly tank is here but this is a pretty in-depth mod. I like his "15OTM-B" version that is linked somewhere in this thread. http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/34047-druids-icon-mod-version-67-compatible/

For researching the next vehicle, you probably always want to research everything that carries over on the vehicle BEFORE it, if possible. You can always buy the new tank and continue to research that module on the old tank (daily double XP FTW) if you keep it for a while. It's always less painful to play an upgraded tank than a fresh tank with basic modules.

thanks for the tips everyone.

also, omg I'm AWFUL at this game, jesus. These matches are hilarious, always like 1 or 2 guys on each team getting like 10/14 kills. And everyone else getting owned. I feel proud if I kill 1 enemy!

So when you die, do you have to wait for the match to complete to get the exp/credits? Is it bad manners not to wait? Or can I exit and start another?

Nothing wrong with leaving and moving on to the next tank. It can be useful sometimes to sit back and watch somebody playing one of your tanks, but the general expectation is that you'll leave and get working on your next tank. Doing so can significantly speed up your grinds.

Before I start, if you know which tank tree you want to pursue or know which tank you want to finish up with, we can help devise a route of research for you. Should lighten the load a bit and point you in an optimal direction for progress, just for example: picking up the 100mm D10T gun whilst you're on the KV-3 can be beneficial as you can use it quickly/immediately on the IS tank, giving that a keener edge whilst you work your way to the 122mm's.

thanks for the tips everyone.

Tier 1-3 is for all intents and purposes a fustercluck. Most people have 50% crews on tanks they will keep for a couple of hours tops so they charge in, die, leave the match (it is safe to do so, addressing one of your questions. The only time it might be bad manners is if you are in a platoon. Always discuss that before moving over) and move onto the next tank.

Personal recommendation: Play all 3 free starter tanks and make them Elite (research everything). This should unlock the start of every tree for you and save you a little hassle down the line.

Expect to die hopelessly in Tiers 1-3, probably even Tiers 1-4 so don't worry. At tier 5 you might be having enough credits for 75% crew training which *really* helps. Prior to this, you are switching tanks too often to make good use of it.

Generalisation warning:
German tanks have the lowest damage guns but pack a good RoF with high penetration and the best accuracy. They have good acceleration in general but often lack top speed and have poorer turning abilities. Armour can be an issue as they lack sloping until Tier 7/8 (Prototype VK3002DB (7), Panther (7), King Tiger (8))

US tanks have moderate accuracy with good damage figures and penetration, usually with the best RoF. Very light armour but the most manueverable tanks in the game. They have solid acceleration and moderate top speeds.

Russian tanks have slower, less accurate firing guns which pack one hell of a punch. They can be lacking in penetration at some points in their tree. Reasonably agile, nipping fast and pack good acceleration too.

As for Mods, I use the below mods:
Minimap Increase Mod - 50% and Big Icons (I think the standard minimap and icons are too small. Mainly because I game on a 47" HDTV)
Nordis Crosshair Mods - Full 7.1 update. Adds a nice number count to your reload times and I like the clean cut labels
PoGS Contour Icon Mod - Sidebars/Alt key labels, pre-match/Tab labels. There are a lof of mods here to choose from. I pick the one that tells me the tank, it's tier, top average penetration and all of the relevant armour values assuming that it is fully upgraded
OverTarget Markers - This is a very nice mod that I found after making my previous videos. It can be set to permanently display player names, tank names and health, including an 1,000/1,200 health counter that will flash -200 for ex. if it gets shot.

None of those mods are necessary but definitely help improve my gameplay experience.

Oh wow thanks for the detailed reply!

So I'll hit your points in sequence:
I didn't think very hard about these choices (mostly picking tanks that I find exciting IRL, haha) so if something is particularly shitty or I'm missing out on tank destroyers, let me know...
American: M2 toward Pershing
German: PzkpfwII toward... panther or tiger. Leopard interests me too.
USSR: T-26 toward KV and then IS. Not sure which combo of KVs to take *shrug* (So I'll keep that gun thing in mind)

So far, as you suggested, I've been playing all 3 nations b/c getting enough $ to buy tier 3 isn't happening any time soon... haha. I've got fully upgraded (except radio) PzkpfwII and (just now) fully up'd T-26. Sold off my leichttraktor to make room. Somehow my record w/the russian tanks is just way better. I just pulled 4 kills w/my half-upgraded T-26 in tier2/3 match! Tier 2/3 matches with the PzkpfwII have resulted in me getting owned hardcore. I feel like part of the issue is the rapid-fire 20mm cannons... just bounces off Tier3!

But yeah dying hopelessly is about the size of it. I've had a few good runs, esp in the T-26.

As for mods, I got nordis and the druid icon mod which is a form of OTM (both on the earlier suggestion of forum members). I'm gaming on a laptop screen so I haven't decided about the minimap size. PoGS sounds interesting but I knwo I wouldn't use that info yet, heh.

So two questions...
1) when you say make them elite, should I keep playing them more to get "free XP" points?
2) my frame rate *dies* when there's a good bit of smoke. Like drops to <1. Can I disable smoke?

edit: but overall the game has been a lot of fun I have no idea if I'm any good at it but whatevs

You're welcome.

IMO, the US Medium branch is the best medium branch by a long shot. Most of them are very capable, despite lacking any form of armour. After studying the current US Medium Tree, I'd probably go for the M4 Lee (terrible tank), M4 Sherman, M4A3E2 Sherman (Jumbo), T20, then M26 Pershing. The big reason I suggest this progression path is the M4 Lee also leads off to the US Heavy Tanks and offers a clear progression where you aren't taking a side-grade.

German tanks: The new Tier 7 Panther which I have not driven is apparently poor. The Tiger is most certainly the weakest tank in the Tier 7 Heavy category, even though I loved mine to pieces and loved my KT/love my E-75 even more. The Leopard is a very, very nice scout tank but that's all it will ever really be, except in Tier 4 max matches where it will dominate. The VK2601 that comes from the Leopard is very good too. Also bear in mind that this branch comes to a dead end at Tier 5.

Russian tanks: Their heavies were once considered OP. In reality, the Russian playstyle tends to lend itself well to most newer players, offering a solid mix of mobility, armour and a gun that when it hits blows chunks out of stuff. The progression here is definitely KV (my Guide on this will help a LOT), KV-3 (research everything on here, use the 107mm or 100m gun mainly) and then onto the IS (using the 100mm until you feel confident with the first 122mm or obtain the second 122mm)

If you are bouncing or know you will bounce a lot, switch to HE. If the autocannon types don't have HE or just feel hopeless, fit the best 'normal' gun you can. Sometimes HE really is the way to go. I saw a Patton with the real 105mm use HE on an IS-4 get completely slaughtered by members of my team for not using AP. IS-4's have magic bounce armour and absorbing tracks so AP is liable to bounce, especially if you're scrapping for your life like he was. 3 shots of HE finished it off and imo he definitely took the right option. (Details: Patton: 100 HP, IS-4: ~400 HP, 1v1 duel with Patton being last man standing, IS-4 having a JagdTiger and Arty left)

1) Grinding experience on an Elite tank is only useful if you want to spend real life money (or 'Accelerate crew training'. The experience earned (unless using accelerate crew training) is 'locked' to that tank and you use gold at the rate of 1 gold = 25 experience to turn that 'locked experience' into 'free experience' which you can use on anything.

2) See link. With an i5 2500k clocked at 4.3ghz, 8Gb of Corsair Vengeance running at it's rated timings and speed (1600mhz) and a 1Gb HD6870, I get drops in framerate too, down into the 20's with smoke and other random strange drops.

Pro tip: Do not use free experience to buy tanks or upgrades for existing tanks. Once you've grinded the experience for a new tank, use free experience to provide that new tank with an instant boost, like tracks or a new turret/gun. I'd probably suggest saving free experience until a Tier 5 tank... however I know that in reality I'd be itching to improve something first!

I found this link for zoom lag which might be an even bigger issue for me:
http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index...l-remove-fps-drop-when-zoomed-in/page__st__20
But I guess basically lots of ppl are having issues so I'll try some of the various fixes and see if one of them doesn't do what I want.

Seems like removing the gun smoke effects would make things a little harder to see since there'd be less indication of what is shooting at you?

Also the PzkpfwII has no regular cannon and hte autocannons all have no HE. Doh! haha. It's not that bad I think i'm getting better w/it.

--Ok I'll take your advice on the American line & go pershing by way of sherman.
--You make my two original German options sound really sad What (besides leopard) is good in Germany? TDs? Do you make as much $$ doing scouting? If leopard/tiger suck then I should probably hit leopard, have some fun w/that, then try something else entirely?
--That said your comments make the russian KV stuff sound even more enticing.

And yup I've been hoarding free xp. I was going to save it up for precisely what you described and I'm the hoarding type in games so I'll have no difficulty resisting the urge to spend it

I think the Luchs is fun, it's not that fast but it turns like few other tanks, good to zig zag (I made the comment tonight it turns like Mitt Romney).

The German TD's are a good line.

The arty are slow to play, but with the good guns can hit the whole map.

The panzer 38's aren't bad, Panzer IV is a nice sniper, 3601 and 3002 are nice, tiger II and up also.

The Leopard was a popular scout, but the newer tanks seem popular for that, and I like the t-50 and t-50-2 perhaps better - fast and nice turning.

Yeah, I have issues with zooming in too. Sad because I spend a lot of time zoomed in.

Good German tanks: VK3601(H) apparently, Tiger (I still love it but most hate it), Tiger P (a Tiger with hugely better armour), King Tiger (best T8 Heavy), E-75 (probably the best T9 Heavy), VK4502B Ausf P (a niche tank. If you can master the heavy front armour and very odd turret location, you'll be a monster), E-100/Maus (both solid tier 10 tanks).

The KV is the first Heavy people get. It is very flexible with it's loadout but very slow and vulnerable. Most people keep it for credit grinding and abuse the 107mm gun for a lot of the time or the 152mm gun for very specialised BOOM making.

For the smoke effect FPS problem, you can try a compressed textures mod. I don't know if this is updated for the current release, and I don't know if it actually helps.

Yeah elcs linked to that post as well. I'm not sure that the compressed textures modify the behavior of smoke b/c the post has a separate item for smoke. That post has a file which mods out explosions, smoke, tracers, and environmental destruction effects. Seems like a bit much to be removing; i really only want smoke gone.

Or if ditching smoke is too close to cheating, they should release a "shitty smoke" version like in CS 1.6. Looked godawful but didn't rape your framerate.

edit: if i exit the game before the battle is over, is there any way to see the 'after action report'? I know you get a little msg in the msg log indicating how much xp/credits you got, but I'd like to see how many dudes I hit and so forth too.

edit2: wtf, im face to face in my pz35t with another pz35t. I have the best cannon weapon, 41mm penetration. Distance is like 10-20m. I'm firing into his front armor which is 20mm thick. I'm bouncing constantly. His shots are all penetrating me though. ugh
