How far away were you, over distance AP decreases. Are you aiming at the curves in the turret or the angled armor on the tank or aiming at the flat surfaces. I have glances with the 128 on my Ferdi on a KV before. It is annoying but it happens. Last night in my KV, I bounced an American T34 big gun from the REAR. He ate a derp for that one and then I promptly died.
I was something like 150m away. Yeah AP dies off w/range but c'mon, 99mm is my "minimum" so rolling anywhere near 99 should be fairly rare. I was aiming for the flat part of the turret where it meets the hull. I figured if I hit there, I should pen. If I hit the mantlet dead on, I should pen. If I hit the hull, I should pen (esp w/those 3 weak viewing/mg/etc ports on the front). So maybe I was pounding dirt into the tiiiny curved part? I think my aiming circle was just about as big as his turret.
I swear the random rolls sometimes don't feel that random*. Like I must've had some ridiculous bad luck against the KV to be rolling like low-pen & hitting on the curved parts or something. But it works in my favor sometimes too. Like I pen'd a KT *frontally* with my vk3061 from 250m. Three times. In a row. After that I couldn't even damage it w/HE, haha.
I'm sooo tempted to just drop 15k free xp on the long88. Godamn 203mm of pen sounds amazing!
*Yes I know how mathematically retarded this statement is, but I know anyone who's ever played a game dependent on a RNG knows what I'm talking about with this.
edit: And I'm generally not claiming broken mechanics or unfair bias or anything like that. Just needing to express some frustration at getting my ass kicked by a KV!!!! Ugh
