Maybe its just me but the artillery complaint/debate often reminds me of complaint/debates of stealth in the MMOs like DAoC, WoW, etc., Its going to be a constant issue no matter what they do methinks.
That should be the role of Tank Destroyers.
On a heavier note my Guide to Heavy Tanks has been released and is available here.
Do not hide back at base and expect light and medium tanks to scout for you so that you can snipe at the enemy and avoid repair bills. Move your backside, join with a few other tanks in a battle group formation and be there to steamroller the opposition.
If by the time you reach Tier 7 in any tank and you don't know how to use your tank effectively, then perhaps World of Tanks is not for you and no guide can save you.

that was my favorite part, until

Well, so much for me getting you pictures of my IS. D:
TDs should be the snipers, BUT:
1. Detection is really screwy. Sometimes you won't detect a tank until it's right on top of you. On the other hands, TDs, which are supposed to be harder to spot sometimes are not. And you only get one shot before everyone and their cousin knows you're out there.
2. Targets a long range warp around so you can't shoot them unless they're standing still. Light tanks can close in on you at Warp 10 and you won't be able to get a good shot until they're right on top of you.
3. TD guns are equivalent to their tank counterparts in most matches. They should be better, for balance reasons. So you're really not going to be destroying anything more than what a tank could.
4. TDs are extra crippled by track hits compared to tanks. Worse, they have less armor than tanks, so a near miss by artillery is much more likely to take out your tracks. Worser is that you can't shoot on the move at anything not dead in front of you, which means you're sitting still and arty bait. Worserest, most arty can one-shot you. Two at best. If your track gets hit, you're going down to that second arty shot.
I know *how* TDs should be represented and used in the game, but honestly right now they're just self-gimped tanks. You could probably be an equivalently good sniper in a comparable tank, but what's the fun in that when you have a turret and working tracks?
I never heard of this game sounds interesting. does this game have a good player base ratio ?
I'm getting pretty bummed. I was really looking forward to advancing in the TD class. Then I got the Hetzer. It has a decent gun (7.5cm and the 10.5cm), but I keep getting thrown into matches with Tier 8-9 vehicles. So I line up a perfect shot, and boom, 2 percent damage. Then I'm instantly killed by artillery. So I end up getting 50-100 experience, with the next TD at 12k experience just to unlock. Just venting, I'm sure they will get the balance and game matching mechanics better soon.
I hear ya. I love my Marder II but the Hetzer was a rude shock. The best thing I would advise is that you follow a group of other tanks (shouldn't be too hard with such a low top speed)
The other thing is to rarely go for headon shots. It helps if (assuming you followed a group) position yourself at a slight angle to them. Then - when the enemy points their front armor at your teammates you are in position for a side shot. Or wait to see if they start the Circle Dance and try for a rear shot
You can also play the 'Mosquito' role. my team was going up against a Tiger II. Since I really can't do any damage to them I settled for continuiously shooting their track. I hit them there about 7 times keeping them immobilized while our artillery slowly blasted them to pieces. Even though I did no damage other than the track I still got 11,000XP and the sniper award for my work. Granted they couldn't get a bead on me due since they were stuck at the crest of the hill I think track hits give decent XP and help your teammates kill tehm faster
I move every 1-2 shots if their arty is still in play. Seems to slow down how long it takes me to die from them
Won't always help but it makes the pain a bit less
I do have a question though:
I seem to get a large mix of hit results. The first shot will 'go right through them' while the next won't penetrate their armor when I am pointing to roughly the same spot. Does anyone else run into this a lot?
