Maybe its just me but the artillery complaint/debate often reminds me of complaint/debates of stealth in the MMOs like DAoC, WoW, etc., Its going to be a constant issue no matter what they do methinks.

Balance is always an issue and has been since the dawn of computer games

Even when things are balanced, they aren't. The nature of gamers shines through.

Very true Elcs. A warning... lot of lag on the server today. Everyone is complaining about it. Makes driving and shooting really hard.

Edit: Not to mention the often booting back to the garage during a fight. Grrrrrrrrrr!

I'd say arty should be removed as individual units. IMO it's be much better off as an area affect attack done by off-map units, targeting say a 2x2 grid area for 15 seconds or so. Low/moderate damage on a direct hit with a tank (depending on tank type and arty level), but a decent chance of track damage on near misses. It should be a support unit to soften up large groups of enemies or help root out entrenched enemies, not a direct combat unit.

Obviously though they're trying to make arty the "snipers" of WoT.

That should be the role of Tank Destroyers.

On a heavier note my Guide to Heavy Tanks has been released and is available here.

Should be, yeah.  But a lot of the arty mechanics and maps seem to heavily favor arty at the moment.

I'm thinking at some point artillery range will have to be shortened or maps made larger to deal with the artillery issues that players now face. That may be preferable to a nerf on artillery damage per shot.

TDs should be the snipers, BUT:

1. Detection is really screwy. Sometimes you won't detect a tank until it's right on top of you. On the other hands, TDs, which are supposed to be harder to spot sometimes are not. And you only get one shot before everyone and their cousin knows you're out there.

2. Targets a long range warp around so you can't shoot them unless they're standing still. Light tanks can close in on you at Warp 10 and you won't be able to get a good shot until they're right on top of you.

3. TD guns are equivalent to their tank counterparts in most matches. They should be better, for balance reasons. So you're really not going to be destroying anything more than what a tank could.

4. TDs are extra crippled by track hits compared to tanks. Worse, they have less armor than tanks, so a near miss by artillery is much more likely to take out your tracks. Worser is that you can't shoot on the move at anything not dead in front of you, which means you're sitting still and arty bait. Worserest, most arty can one-shot you. Two at best. If your track gets hit, you're going down to that second arty shot.

I know *how* TDs should be represented and used in the game, but honestly right now they're just self-gimped tanks. You could probably be an equivalently good sniper in a comparable tank, but what's the fun in that when you have a turret and working tracks?

Do not hide back at base and expect light and medium tanks to scout for you so that you can snipe at the enemy and avoid repair bills. Move your backside, join with a few other tanks in a battle group formation and be there to steamroller the opposition.

that was my favorite part, until

If by the time you reach Tier 7 in any tank and you don't know how to use your tank effectively, then perhaps World of Tanks is not for you and no guide can save you.

Part 1 is good advice for a Heavy Tank. We've already discussed how many times we've seen this phenomenon and it should be made known that it is not the best thing to do generally.

Part 2 might be a bit blunt but if you've gotten that far (usually several hundred games, 700+?) and not grasped several of the main concepts then it might just be true.

Well, so much for me getting you pictures of my IS. D:

The community was really looking out for my Heavy tank Guide and after 3 Forsaken World Beta Exclusive blogs, I had to post a World of Tanks one.

I am not particularly happy with the blog and I am still accepting pictures to go up on it, only three pictures doesn't seem enough to back up such a topic.

I agree with all of the above. Their main advantages (stealth, heavy front armour (better than mediums) and a big gun) are rather lacking in game mechanics. The armour works but if you're tracked by the random shot from someone you can't see when you are 100% perfectly still (right mouse mode), have a camo net and have binocs... anything can remove you from the face of the map.

Warping can even be an issue to a player with binocs at a range of 200m. So sad.

When the mechanics work, I have found my JagdPanzerIV to be rather lethal... but that does not happen often.

What is really getting to me is waiting 45 seconds for a match to start. I almost alt tab every time I load now because thats soooo long for me....damn I am getting very impatient with this game.

I never heard of this game sounds interesting. does this game have a good player base ratio ?

About 4,000-7,000 players on at a time.

We are currently stress testing the US servers so we get to around 140-150 concurrent games and then the server starts randomly dropping games back to the garage for 0 gains but 0 losses.

It's not too bad until it drops you 2-3 times in a row or you get dropped from a match where you are near the top

Bought a Leopard tank today. Everything is fully upgraded except the last radio. This baby really flies. Best speed is on a flat paved road at 68kph. Driving in towns is really hard because you get going so fast you cant make those sharp turns. With premium I'm getting 10k-15k credits per fight. Not too shabby. I need to add some extra modules once I get the last radio upgrade. And yes, I die 90% of the battles but its worth it when you see the end game report saying how many enemies you spotted and how many artillery you kill. Half the time I can usually kill one and sometimes I'm getting two arty kills. Real different play style than the KV3 I currently have as my other main tank.

Remember, even in a small tank like the Leopard, you can RAM other light tanks and potentially kill them. Low to medium tier arties will go poof when you ram them too. If you're running low on HP and are scouting, FULL SPEED AHEAD at the first arty you see!

I'm getting pretty bummed. I was really looking forward to advancing in the TD class. Then I got the Hetzer. It has a decent gun (7.5cm and the 10.5cm), but I keep getting thrown into matches with Tier 8-9 vehicles. So I line up a perfect shot, and boom, 2 percent damage. Then I'm instantly killed by artillery. So I end up getting 50-100 experience, with the next TD at 12k experience just to unlock. Just venting, I'm sure they will get the balance and game matching mechanics better soon.

For those who are wanting to play the game but haven't gotten an invite through the beta signup, shatteredcrystal.com has free codes that you can get instantly. I'm at work right now and can't get the actual link but I imagine if you search for "World of Tanks" on their site you can find it quite easily.

I hear ya. I love my Marder II but the Hetzer was a rude shock. The best thing I would advise is that you follow a group of other tanks (shouldn't be too hard with such a low top speed)

The other thing is to rarely go for headon shots. It helps if (assuming you followed a group) position yourself at a slight angle to them. Then - when the enemy points their front armor at your teammates you are in position for a side shot. Or wait to see if they start the Circle Dance and try for a rear shot

You can also play the 'Mosquito' role. my team was going up against a Tiger II. Since I really can't do any damage to them I settled for continuiously shooting their track. I hit them there about 7 times keeping them immobilized while our artillery slowly blasted them to pieces. Even though I did no damage other than the track I still got 11,000XP and the sniper award for my work. Granted they couldn't get a bead on me due since they were stuck at the crest of the hill I think track hits give decent XP and help your teammates kill tehm faster

I move every 1-2 shots if their arty is still in play. Seems to slow down how long it takes me to die from them

Won't always help but it makes the pain a bit less

I do have a question though:
I seem to get a large mix of hit results. The first shot will 'go right through them' while the next won't penetrate their armor when I am pointing to roughly the same spot. Does anyone else run into this a lot?

Well all damage and penetration values has a deviance of +- 30%, so this happens alot.
