Unfortunately you won't be able to punch into King Tigers until you get the JagdPanther (tier 7) and the new 8.8cm Pak 43 L/71 which has a 203mm average penetration.

The JagdPanzer IV is extremely good with the 8.8cm gun it can pick up but will only be able to punch through Tier 7 Heavies via side armour (front is quite unreliable).

I really like my JagdPanzer and I just got it last night. The matches didn't seem to be much worse than the harder ones I would get as the Stug (King Tigers and such). I imagine once I get the 8.8cm it will be even better

I even took down a King Tiger all on my own last night! Granted I pinned him against a building and shot him repeatedly in the rear while he had to face my front armor - but still!

Interesting side note with that:
He seemed to have real difficulty hitting me. Since we were touching the whole battle his gun looked like it was running partially through my JagdPanzer. When that happened he could not hit me. He had to make a run up the building wall to get a better angle to actually hit me so it looks like you might be able to get so close to certain tanks that they can't hit you

Probably at release or in a month or two. Haven't heard/read any official word.

The JagdPanzer IV is very good. It really struggles against the higher tier tanks with the 8.8cm (which is imo the better gun for it) but it can certainly provide excellent support to any advance/defense.

Re: your Tiger II incident. The JagdPanzer IV is unusually low to the ground. If you can get close enough to certain tanks like you did, they either fire over the top of you or hit you at such an angle it makes it almost impossible to penetrate (HE 'might' take you out but I don't know).

For reference:http://www.elcomesoft.com/2010/11/tank-destroyer-guide-world-of-tanks.html - Top picture... JagdPzIV sits next to a Maus.

I am slowly grinding my way from the JagdPanzer IV to the JagdPanther, but I seem to do better in the JPIV than I have in any other TD before. It has enough armor on the front to survive a few rounds, the 88 is deadly against KVs and lighter, and it has enough speed an maneuverability to get from place to place. I do carry a significant load of HE rounds, though. At range, against higher tier tanks, you will need them to do any amount of damage. Usually 3-5% a shot. But if you have a camo net and crew trained in camo, you can engage enemies at long range and they will not spot you even when you fire. I also have binoculars and coated optics to maximize my own visual range.

I don't want to move to the JgP until I can buy one fully upgraded and convert my crew. I don't want to play in gimp mode.

Does it usually take this long to get in to the beta? I signed up like a week ago, but no word yet.

Do coated optics and binoculars stack?

I still haven't gotten my beta invites from the request form. Check shatteredcrystal.com to see if they are still giving out free codes.

I have just posted a General FAQ for World of Tanks.

It covers some of the most frequently asked questions in depth and provides some useful tactical information.

Its a pretty fun game but in its current beta state the game is pretty shallow. Its simpler then an FPS which to me FPS's are practically mindless. I hope the MMO elements once released add some depth. Currently the game is just team death match over and over, but a team death match were you dont get to respawn, you die once that game is over for you.

That being said I have the second most powerful russian tank and own face!

Agreed, it's definitely not a MMO. It's just a variant of a FPS that has some XP and currency aspects to it, but it's not really any different than the two most recent Call of Duty games in that regard.

That said, it's still fun to play. Because of the speed at which tanks move/aim, there's very little twitch and much more strategy involved in it, which benefits those of us who don't have the reflexes of a 12 year old who has been playing Halo since he was 4.

I have to believe the M3 Lee is the new worst tank in the game. I think it's mostly because it needs to be played like a TD and people insist on playing it like a tank. But either way, they seem to exist in the game only to allow Hetzer drivers to get a kill now and then.

I screwed up by jumping the gun on my JagdPanther and not having enough money to get the good gun or engine. It took me a bit to realize I was losing money each time I played it. I'm back to my JagdPanzer IV which is fully tricked out.

With the success of my guides, I have decided to take another track with my WoT writing.

It's all been rather serious up to now and I thought... "I was tempted to try and write a short story for Games Workshop (WH40k) so... why don't I write a diary on my exploits in World of Tanks?"... So that's what I have done.

I have created a War Diaries blog and I intend to write a new chapter every couple of days to update you on the exploits of me and my tankers who tank all day and tank all night.

Some of these diaries will reflect the noob and hopeless moments, others reflecting on the sheer awesomeness of some tactics and many will encounter the absolute sheer funny moments that can occur.

I really hope you enjoy reading these tales and follow me as the tale unfolds.

This guy goes into much more detail than we did re: camo.

http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/17699-visibility-and-camo-test-updated/

Those results are shocking...

JagdPanther (Penpenn with camo net (with ~26% ave camo skill) 341m

Panther (without camo net ~38% ave camo skill (2*95/5)) 341m

IS (without camo net, 0% camo skill) 305m

Lined up side-by-side seen from Ferdinand (without binocular)

JagdPanther (Penpenn):
With camo, no bush: 337m
Without camo, no bush: 331m
With camo, in bush: 335m
Without camo, in bush: 340m

seen from Ferdinand (without binocular).

We should head back and take off the camo nets and compare...

Basically their results say camo makes you very slightly easier to spot...

Ahh...

Visibility is based off vehicle weight (mass). Russian armored vehicles are tier per tier lighter then their counterparts. So it is really no surprise this is yet another area the Russian tree is placed out in front of the pack.

Stupid way to implement visibility...

Essentially putting on modules adds weight and increases the change of being spotted

Thus your tricked out stealth TD with camo a rammer and spall is more likely to be spotted than a similar TD without the modules

/facepalm

That is terrible if true. The camo needs to offset that penalty and then some so that you come out ahead in the very least.

That's got to be just a glitch. It says quite clearly in the game that visibility is based of of tank height, not mass. Tank destroyers, being shorter than their tank counterparts, should be more difficult to spot. Even then, the game being kinda unrealistic in the first place, they should just make TDs harder to spot overall. That's supposed to be an advantage of choosing TD over a tank. Hard to spot, long range accurate LOS gun, but toast in close combat.

Follow the adventures of Technical Sergeant Betts and his crew in my US Tank Commander War Diary, here.

My attempt to write a diary or journal based upon events in a World of Tanks match, trying to make it sound like a real life event rather than a simulated game. Will also be following another tank later down the line.

I'm finally getting a handle on this game. Getting old sucks, reaction times are embarrassing. I'm finally getting mutiple kills in some matches. I went the Russian TD route and tend to defend the base and SPG's. I did manage to slip on to the enemy's base one match and hide between several blown up tanks and held on to win for our side.

Is there a way to exchange gold or credits for experiance?
