no idea, i think the ones above a player in game refer to have far from your tier they are but no clue for the symbols on the player list in game.

@lupi (or nik)

What do the 1, 2 and 3's mean in the screenshot?

Those are platoons (groups, teams, whatever you want to call them).

Everybody with a 1 is on a team together. Everybody with a 2 is on a team together.

Etc.

In game, there are green and red marks above tanks. Some are triangles, some are squares, some are diamonds, some are 2 hash marks, some are 3 hash marks.

The triangles are tank destroyers. These tanks will be dark gray tank silhouettes in the team list on right/left sides of your screen during a match.

The squares are artilery. These tanks will be a red silhouette in the team list on the right/left.

The diamond is actually just a single hash mark, as you'll see below. These are classified as light tanks. These will be light gray silhouettes on the left/right.

The two-hash (diamond with a diagonal line down the middle) mark tanks are medium tanks and will also be light gray.

The three-hash (diamond with two diagonal lines) mark tanks are heavy tanks.

These marks do not indicate what tier they are. As an example, you can be in a tier 3 medium tank or a tier 3 light tank. You can also be in a tier 8 medium tank. The tier 8 medium will absolutely destroy a tier 5 heavy tank because it can still do damage, will have TONS of armor, and will be fast enough to run circles around a heavy.

Very interestingly, you can press and hold the Alt key during a match to see the name and health status of folks around you. Play with it, it's very good to use when you need to quickly decide what strategy to take.

I had a Maus on my team... with my PzIII. lol Almost everybody just followed him to enemy base and we just capped it. :awe:

I think the medium tanks are a lot more fun to play with than the heavy tanks... until one blows you up of course. :hmm:

Agreed, the medium route is the route I've chosen. I made the decision after earning my KV3, so I'm only in a T-34-85 right now.

The T-44 is an absolute BEAST and I cannot wait to wipe the map in one.

EDIT: OP suggestion: Collection of Anandtech Players names so we recognise each other there. Mine being ElcomeSoft,

So far, the T-34-85 is... pants for me... but I have only had the time to upgrade the gun and my crew barring Radio Operator. Decided on the gun upgrade (85mm ZiS I believe) for the significant damage, accuracy and penetration increase. Means I can sit back and snipe a bit and go toe-to-toe if I pick my ballles right.

Biggest issue in my T-34 was it's low damage, despite high penetration. The T-34-85 seems to address this but it's stock manueverability is pants and not suuposed to be much better with a new engine and suspension.

I have seen T-44's in action and they are often left alone when the enemy has multiple targets of opportunity. Fast, agile and packing a punch similar to that of a lower tier heavy and the penetration to go with it.I can't wait.

My T-34, despite having most of it's crew stolen for my T-34-85. is my money machine. Even without premium he's pulling in a good 9-12k a round at the moment... as long as the matchmaking is not stupidly stacked against me. I can go toe-to toe wit the lower tiered heavy tanks but don't really like to spend more than about a minute circling them, they tend to catch wind of my ploy and try to aim their gun at me, acceleration and top speed are kinda poor if I'm turning too much so they can catch up. Fortunately in that scenario, my weight of firepower is added to by allies and they sink fast

A fully upgraded T44 is a heck of a lot of fun to drive, but it's really hard to consistently make money in one. Full repairs runs about 17k, and a bad round might net you about 9k. A mediocre round gets you 13-17k. A really good round might see you pulling in 25k+. That's fairly rare though, for me anyway.

As far as my map size comment: a match with light on light or heavy on heavy feels fine with the current map size. When you have the full compliment of vehicles with a game containing vehicles from tier 2 to tier 8, the size of many of the maps isn't quite enough to really allow mobility to be a force multiplier for the light boys. Not to mention with many of the maps you only need to move for like 10 seconds as an arty unti from the starting position to have range to 99% of the field.

I was looking on the forums, looks like there may be larger maps and 30 v 30 matches planned for future implementation.

Indeed. There will also be 15x15 team battles. It'd be great to have all 15 people on my side actually know each other, talking on teamspeak, working together instead of 15 individual retards.

I guess this game doesn't need a realism mod. Arty was responsible for a TON of infantry and tank casualties in WWII. The vast majority of infantry casualties, I know that for sure.

Artillery could be deadly to tanks if it landed right on top of the turret. Really a long shot. Arty was responsible for about 70% of the infantry casualties. But I really doubt it accounted for much tank casualties. Unless direct fired like an 88 using AP shells. I know the American lines were overrun in Italy once and they used 105mm arty as direct fire as a last ditch effort to stop German armor. But imo the arty in this game is quite unrealistic.

While there are bogs in the game (rare), there are no transmissions and there are no bridges that can be broken.

Then the Maus will be overpowered

It's a pain in the ass to earn and it has its own weaknesses. It's big (easy to hit and very hard to hide in), slow (can't run away), can still get tracks blown off, is still relatively weak to mid/high tier medium tanks, will still take damage from weak heavies like KV/KV3.

It's not OP.

It was a joke. In real life the Maus was plauged with tranny and pressure issues. And it couldnt cross many bridges in the Reich due to its weight.

I'm going the tank destroyer route so far. (Didn't know I had to get the PZII to move up to Med tanks) I'm still figuring the game out, but since I started playing Saturday, I've been playing every spare minute since.

Artillery should be very damaging on just about anything in the game if hit directly, those shots pack a lot of KE and TNT. After all, there's a reason why when elements of the herman goering division almost wiped out one of the landing sites they had to retreat once the naval guns started locking in on the as well as usn destroyers beaching at dday to provide direct fire support.

If you're going to play an artillery tank, you need to understand that your shell is going to be coming in at an angle. If your shell lands on the ground at the center of your targetting circle, try putting that circle half behind the tank you're firing at. That should put your round coming down on the top of the tank.

If you put your targeting circle right on top of your target tank, your round will land right in front of them or hit them low in the tracks.

Basically, think about your trajectory before you fire.
