z1ggy,
Random pic to help you: http://media-curse.cursecdn.com/attachments/84/309/c6a82426bb90e536ddcbb67762dcd272.jpg
Upper right, it says research and it has a number next to it (189). This is the amount of research you have unlocked on your tank. Each tank this will be different. There is another number above it that says convert experience (32,xxx). This is the accumulated experience that you can use for ANY tank. This accumulates MUCH SLOWER. Using this on lower tier tanks is a waste. Using this to research upper tier tanks or better to bypass stock components on new upper tier tanks is worth it.
So for now, click on the research button and you will be presented with something like:
http://cdn.techdragon.info/images/uploads/2012/09/research-world-of-tanks.png
Above the tank is how much research you have available. Each component costs research to unlock and credits to purchase. In this example, the guy has only 3k research it is not enough to research anything left (final turret (needs that before the final gun), final engine, or the next tanks). After unlocking the modules, he still has to buy them with silver to mount the modules on the tank.
NOTE, your ammo load out defaults to crap when you change turrets or guns. You should be running mostly AP ammo, very few HE, and probably no premium shells (make sure you check the dropbox for silver instead of gold for premium ammo) in low tiers. The reason for no premium ammo is you will lose credits left and right if you spam premium and trust me, you go through a LOT of ammo quickly in low tiers.
Don't worry about consumables (normally small repair/extinguisher/first aid) until you live long enough for the 3k credit hit to be worthwhile. I run them in all my tanks now but will still probably run at a loss in tier 1 if I burn a repair and first aid.
Sorry if I covered more than you needed, but feel free to ask.
