Went ahead and grabbed 30 days of premium. Really liking the game so far. I got the St. Louis cruiser now. Seem to do pretty well damage wise. But cant win in the thing.

What is the rule of thumb when to use HE or AP rounds?

BBs can pretty much use AP all the time. Cruisers use it against other cruisiers when you have a shot into their broadside; then aim at waterline below their exhaust stacks. That should get you some nice Citadel hits. Always fire HE at and with DDs.

Last night i engaged a Murmansk at close rage in my Omaha and I got 5 citadels for ~24k damage with AP. He was firing HE at me and only did like 2k. Try not to expose your own broad side for the same reasons.

St Louis is a close range brawler and will wreck DDs if you ripple fire (hold mouse button) so you can adjust your aim on the fly, but they are slooow and have a crap gun range so you'll get focused down quickly by other CAs and BBs if caught in the open.

Rule of thumb: Use HE, ignore AP unless you're in a BB fighting another BB.

Other than that and some other edge cases, HE is better 95% of the time.

Also the St. Lous with HE is almost OP for its tier. It can out DPS battleships quite easily.

pre open beta patch it was always HE unless in a BB targeting a cruisers or BB. haven't looked since to see what has changed.

That still seems to work for me. Cruiser guns are too small in most cases to pen with AP (well you can probably pen a DD, but due to the manoeuvrability of the DD's it is better to hit with HE and cause a fire which will do more damage than your AP would). BBs can use AP to pen most other BB's (some BBs have better armor than others so there are some that you won't get a good pen on, that said, when you do pen, you cause so much more damage, and against cruisers, you can many times one volley them if you are closer and the shot hasn't lost as much velocity).

As much as I hate the Arkansas, there are times where it just wrecks. It really is a close in puncher (i.e. less than 7km). I had a battle last night where it was basically me and 3 cruisers against 5 enemy battleships. We were hidden in/around some islands, and I tried to make it so that only 2-3 of them could shoot at me at once, but for the most part, they were focusing on killing the cruisers because it was DPS they could get off the field easier/faster than me in 1 BB. Our cruisers were dodging like hell and doing a decent job of it, which let me get in close using the islands and I one by one just wrecked the enemy battleships. I was doing 4-8k damage per shot, and I wasn't broadside/shooting every gun at once, but firing single guns since it lets you be more accurate.

Accuracy is calculated per gun and they don't effect each other.Single shots aren't more accurate than broadsides. The only benefit would be to range using one shot, and then to fire everything else

I didn't appreciate the St. Louis until getting into a South Carolina and having to wait 30 seconds per volley. The St. Louis is like a gattling gun. Can fire over and over and over. I have killed a few South Carolinas with it one v one.

Also tried out the first Japanese destroyer. Those things are fun. But holy crap if they number in the 4+ range on either team get ready to be torpedoed to death.

As much as you want to believe that, I have not found that to be the case in practice. I almost believe they take into account ship movement and recoil from both being hit and firing into the algorithm that spits out the accuracy. I have found that I connect with many more shots when shooting single volleys than a full broadside (above and beyond the ranging effect/information you gain by watching the previous shot land and adjusting the aim).

I also find this.

I get far more hits in my wyoming/new york BB by firing the guns one at a time. Ill only do a full broadside if im about to die or the enemy is going behind an island or something.

How often do they have sales?

I'm running out of ship slots, and I'm starting to sell my useless ships (e.g. Tier 1 for IJN/USN).

Also where do you aim in BB duels? I was in a Myogi against a NY at 8-10KM, and I got about 8 hits with AP shells and it did all of 1000 damage.

Yikes, yeah that ain't much damage. When firing AP, I aim at about the waterline, or perhaps just a scoatch under it when I'm close (~7km or less). When firing HE, I just aim to hit the ship.

The citadels are (typically?) located underneath the gun turrets and smoke stacks. Try aiming for those spots, again around the waterline or so. IMO it's basically luck (R-N-Jesus) if you hit those spots from any farther out than 3km or something, but whatever.

Based on what you've said, the guns should get progressively less accurate when you fire thanks to the recoil. The opposite happening means means you're probably more accurate because you're adjusting your aim as you volley. It would also mean a full broadside would be the most accurate, and as we all know from battleship broadsides that's simply not the case.

There are benefits to volleying vs broadsiding but most of the time, vollying just gives the other ship time to angle their armor or take evasive maneuvers to screw up your shots.

If I'm broadside and firing at a broadside, it's one large salvo. If I'm narrow and shooting at narrow, it's staggered single fire.

Now there are some exceptions like a BB trying to take on a speedy DD, but generally with the game accuracy this seems to work the best.

posted here a week or two ago about how easy the game was, was finishing in the top 3 all the time, sinking 1-3 ships a game was tier 5 in a very short time. Now Im seeing the PAIN, lat night in a tire 5 destroyer i was ONE SHOTTED, yes a single shell (not shells, not torpedo) i have a screens shot, hit with a SINGLE SHELL and Tier 5 Japanese Destroyer is 100% gone. Not complaining, but wow! I am really having a swing here. From top 3 to bottom 3 (actually probably average mid pack) Anybody doing anything Like Quickybaby/jingles on WoW, I need to watch some skilled players as my tactics are not working anymore.

I am curious: Compared to WoT ... what "staying power" do you think WoW will have compared to WoT? I am getting WoW already ...

Sounds like you got detonated? That happens when you take a hit to the magazine. I've had an Atlanta one shot my Murmansk before o.0. And if I understand the match maker correctly it supposedly balances you by player skill which I think is leading to the "streaky" wins/losses. Some nights I'll win every match, then I'll have one like night before last when I went 1-7. One match my team lost even though I sank 4 or 5 ships.

The matchmaker dosent take skill into account.

Its pretty random sometimes. I see matches where they have a CV and a tier 6 BB and we have no carrier and tier 5/4 BBs. I can only assume every ship has a matchmaking weight of sorts and it balances it by giving us better destroyers/cruisers etc. Or maybe after a certain amount of time of being unable to find a suitably balanced team it just says screw it and throws anything together.

Guess I was wrong.

There is a lot wrong in that link too though. Is that how the devs want it to be or how it is? Not putting a lot of stock into a Q&A from 3 years ago.

Is the match maker going to guarantee aircraft carriers in every battle or will there some times be battles without them?

Matchmaker will guarantee only that CVs are balanced between teams, if any is present in certain battle. - Posted 13 December 2012 - 07:38 AM

I'm getting better at BB's. Just had a game yesterday where I one shot two ships (including a Cleveland, which totally changed the game in our favor as those are nasty).

I'm on the New Mexico right now (Tier VI USN BB). It's a beast. Not looking forward to the Colorado, as it is somehow worse. How does a Tier VII BB have LESS HP than a Tier VI? Also has less shots, worse dispersion, worse maneuverability, same speed. Only thing it has better really is damage per shell (but it has less of them and they hit less often) and better AA. I think I'd rather if I could just grind that XP with the New Mexico instead. Oh well.

I havent quite got the hang of the BB class yet. I think the long duration between shots and the trajectories have been putting me off. Also how slow they are compared to cruisers and destroyers. Granted im only on the South Carolina which I think is a giant turd given how many get killed by my St. Louis. Hoping to move past it and down the line quickly. But American cruisers and Japanese destroyers are too much fun!

IJN BBs are faster, at least up until tier 8ish from my experience. Myogi, kongo and fuso are all better than their USN counterparts in terms of range and agility. The St Louis is just a ridiculously overpowered ship at its tier, it's not really its fault the tier 3 BBs are all pigs.

Yeah, the ST Louis is ridiculous for its tier.

Kongo is certainly better than New York. I'd say Fuso and New Mexico are more competitive. Same caliber guns, same amount of shots. Fuso is faster, New Mexico has better armor.

Also, right now I'm saying the fire prevention skill (Second level skill, -7% fire chance) is super necessary to all BB's (and probably cruisers as well).

I'd definitely say get that skill for BB. HE rains down on them all day unless it is another BB shooting at them.

St. Louis is ridiculous. Keeping it for the fun factor.

Destroyers are just sick when played right. I fear them more than anything on the map right now.

Think my main focus is going to be going down the US cruiser line for now followed by Japanese destroyers. Will play US BBs for the bonus.

By the way, the Atlanta is hilariously awesome. Paper armor and short range, so can be hard to use right, but it can tear things apart.

If you fire all the guns in succession, by the time you fire the last one, the first one has reloaded. This is a great strategy to take out destroyers that are hard to hit because they maneuver all the time. It is a non stop stream of HE rounds, like a machine gun. Just walk them in

Started out not liking the Phoenix. But Im warming up to her. Doesnt have the DPS of the St. Louis. But has better range, armor, and speed\manueverability.

Driving a cruiser I have been using AP against cruisers gets me a lot of big hits. AP seems to be mixed against destroyers. HE is still the favored round against BBs.
