The graphics would have been great in 2001. Now, not so much. Maybe I am shallow, but I don't like outdated graphics.

Don't feel bad. I would go out on a limb and say almost 90% of gamers are just as shallow, though most of them won't admit it. Sure people are going to say gameplay >graphics but lets be honest, it's 2008 and it should really be gameplay = graphics. I want my game to look sexy as well as play good, and we shouldn't have to sacrifice one for the other.

If the gameplay is really damn good, and I will be easily able to overlook graphics shortcomings.

Imagine 100 person battles with ridiculous graphics. I know my computer is not exactly top of the line, and I would most certainly lag. If I died because of that I would be so much more pissed than if I died because somebody better than me ganked me.

Sure games can look great at highest settings, but I never once was actually able to play WoW and pvp with the graphics set anything above low-medium. What's the point of the prettiness then?

I think they truly are trying function over form here.

I had forgotten all about this game. A guild mate back in the day in wow (like second year wow was out) was raving about this. He was in the alpha and wanted our guild to sign up when they did guild invitations. Sounds interesting and the graphics have improved a lot from what I saw years ago from my guildie. But I dunno, I'll be busy with WAR for a long time to come I think.

dont mean to sound like a jerk, but after the lofty goals and epic failure of age of conan i cant say im too optimistic about games that offer to provide these types of features

Actually, publishers no longer want to sell you real gameplay, unless they can charge you a monthly fee. Although a streamlined main title with several full priced ($40-$60 each) add-on packs (aka DLC) which are required to complete the gameplay is a growing trend.

graphics == higher sales

gameplay == lower sales for next title (since you will still be playing, modding, replaying this title)

Look at most of the current big sellers. Pretty graphics, but short gameplay. Well that $50 (or $60 for consoles) is shot to hell. Which title will this week's $50 get blown on?

Bumping my old thread in light of some new info on how CB is going. They are slowly letting people into closed beta as needed, so those of us who have signed up shouldn't get their hopes up. The link provided let's you read the first impressions of those who are currently playing DF. I'm getting excited! IT'S NOT VAPORWAREZ.

http://forums.darkfallonline.c...?p=1967700#post1967700

Here's some snippets from the AI post:

?The AI is very cool, and just needs some tweaking. You can get it trapped trying to run away from you in some cases, for example. Otherwise it presents a big challenge. One guy trying to take on 4 goblins is not simple - the goblins will melee you and then sprint away to kite you around while the other ones shoot you, and the second you go for them instead, the one that was running will pull out its own bow...?

?Intelligent AI? This is something I've not experienced until entering Df. It's as if fighting the mobs mirrored fighting other players. They actually work together attempting to kill you rather then serving as your training material.?

PVP post:

?Furthermore, the everchanging surroundings allow for great stealth/ambush tactics. Crouching behind an abandoned cart alongside a large road, waiting for your target to pass by and quietly landing a few arrows in their back was a very gratifying experience.?

?Group PvP is going to be neat. It's already dangerous going 3v1 because the '3' side will constantly hit eachother in melee or with spells accidentally. A skilled solo player can definitely pull off some cool stuff there.?

?And the sound effects are everything they should be, from the blocking of a wooden shield, the tinking of metal on metal, the character's vocal grunts and the spattering of blood... on everything. Even when I don't have arrows sticking out of me already, I can tell something is shooting at me and usually from which direction, when I hear the whizzing of an arrow fly past my head.?

The need to work on the character models a little more.

I do not want to spend hours on end looking at a guys ass eat his pants, and the tits (female) are just stupidly big.

The long anticipated fps/rpg vaporwarez had been announced to go into testing with Beta being released in October.

Some info on the game from those unfamiliar with the title.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bYYT6Wg3Gg

More specifics on key features courtesy of ZzZGuy from a older DF thread.
-You can build cities
-Capture cities
-Hire NPC guards
-Sail war/cargo/pirate ships
-Wage naval battles
-Become a pirate and raid player ships and settlements
-PvP anywhere, anytime. (it was mentioned on the site that there are "fair" penalties, i would assume this is like in EvE where you CAN attack anyone anywhere, but if your in a high security system the NPC cops will bust your @$$ hard)
-There is no level or class system for weapons and equipment, you can pick anything up when you first start (getting your hands of good stuff is another matter i would assume)
-FPS style fighting, no clicking a target to attack, you can jump to the side to dodge, you aim your spells, and you are 100% in control of your characters movements
-No classes, so if you want to go from alchemy to mining, you just start on that trade.
-10,000 people playing together.
-5 Races
-You can still play like you would in wow
-Or start your own craft making business complete with a building and NPC helpers.
-You can trade
-Almost everything is player made (like in EvE, but i would assume the real high end weapons you will still have to farm mobs)
-10,000 people per server will make for massive PvP battles. (i just hope they can avoid the lag issues EvE has with 500vs500 fleet battles, if not then that will kill a major part of darkfall)
-LOTS of mounts
-Fighting while on mounts
-No hovering names
-There is race specific magic and hundreds of spells
-Looks like stealth is more realistic (as in you stalk someone and strike them when they are not looking). A trailer mentioned that shiny armor will reduce your stealthiness.
-Player characters will show damage
and some Q&A's at http://mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?game=4&bhcp=1

You can check out the new gameplay trailer on youtube(6 parts). If you're iffy about the graphics, they purposely used a older engine so that 100v100 pvp wars will be lag free.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJSm674ql5s

Check out their official site at http://www.darkfallonline.com/ and goto the forums to see how you can apply for Beta!!@!!!!oneone!!eleven!

and only 2-3 of those features will actually make it into the game - if it even comes out at all.

I loved Shadowbane when myself and my guild were really active in it, both during and after P2P. Hoping this can deliver a similar, though superior experience.

My last and final DF update:

http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=87239
January 22nd 2009 Launch Date Announced for Darkfall Online.

Athens, Greece ? December 5th, 2008 - Audio Visual Enterprises SA and Aventurine SA in a joint statement today announced that their highly anticipated MMORPG title Darkfall Online will launch across Europe on January 22nd, 2009. North American players are also welcome to participate in the European launch of Darkfall which will precede a North American launch.

More details to be announced as they become available.

Just 2 more months and the wait is finally over. On another note, here a review from a comic site http://beta.thenoobcomic.com/df_preview/intro.html

Wow. Now to see how much stuff that's on my list makes it into the game.

How did they solve their money problems, looked like a sure bet they would go under a year or so ago.

Hmm, I'm not going to school next semester. Should I spend my time after work freelancing or playing Darkfall? This is going to be tough.

open beta is just server stress test, not supposed to be fore extra bugfixing (though that may happen). i see no reason why a one week open beta (aka free demo) should be any indication of a games bullshitworthiness. If anything, it shows they are confident in what they have put accomplished so far. Reactions out of closed beta have appeared to be positive from what i have seen.

I'm more skeptical of the release date then the quality of the game.

Says on wikipedia

NA TBA
EU January 22, 2009

Hopefully this is for retail box version, and you can still download the game from NA if it is delayed there (such as problems finding NA publisher).

Same, no updates on the DF forum about the game and we're less then 2 weeks away. Had to find out about simple things like the size of the client (which is 18gb!) and the starting stats of each race from beta leaks... and then we hear we were suppose to have Open Beta so people can test the game before buying but there has been no word yet... Starting to lose faith it'll make the 22nd deadline .
