You and everyone who really misses EQ1 should check out this project. I really hope they recreate the old EQ before some of the newer expansions really messed it up.

If I never played EQ should I try this? Or did I miss out on the greatest legacy of American history and never will I understand it?

(edit) damn, it wont have a mac client. just windows. I thought EQ was available on Mac as well? yeah i know i can bootcamp but I had dual booting

I believe the official EQ game does have a Mac client but this is just a bunch oh guys hacking an old client.

It may be a bit hard to get into as a newbie. I'm sure most of the player base will be veterans.

EQ1 combat was pretty basic. 8 spell slots, about 4 abilities on a fighter.

In EQ2, I had 8 hotbars for my defiler. 10 buttons on each one. I had 80 buttons on my screen I had to click.

Did it make it more complex? No. All I did was watch my hotbars lightup and whack em as they did. Dots wore off so quick in EQ2 (the longest one was 24 seconds, most were shorter). Spamming buttons doesn't make things more complex. Strategy in combat is what makes things more complex. The strategy in older games like EQ1 has already been mentioned, anti magics, aggro radius, roamers, runners, etc. Just a different type of strategy. Modern days MMORPGs require more to do in combat but all it equates to is whacking buttons continuiously, thats not strategy.

Are you serious?

Depending on the class, fighting in EQ was very complex.

I played a druid & monk to 60 in the SoV - SoL period, and later a shaman & SK to 65 and finally quit when Gates was released. Quite serious, yes. Even WoW's combat system trumps EQ's, as it should since it's a second generation MMORPG.

Always nice to see another EQ1 player out there. I was also a long time player, and I have tried a few MMOs since then and none have fit the bill. That has included, DAoC, EQ2, Vanguard, and most recently WoW. I'm level 60 on WoW currently, and am bored. I long for the days of Kunark and Velious, but I don't think anything will ever be as good as that.

*sigh*

Based on the forums it seems like mostly vets. It sounds like they are a ways off from launching, though, so who knows how much popularity it will gain until then.

It seems like they are putting some serious effort into getting things right, though. Also, and I just skimmed through the forums, but I didn't see any mention of what SoE thinks about it. They should probably address the IP issues with SoE directly, or at least with an attorney, before progressing too far.

Maybe I'm missing the suckiness of WoW because I have mostly stuck to grouping with RL friends but I think it's a pretty solid game. I played a variety of MUDs, UO, EQ, DAOC, EQ2 and think WoW is a solid game with a relatively broad appeal. It has it's wrinkles and a fair number of asshat players, but the fact is with 9 million people the sheer number of asshats is going to be greater than a game with 1 million.

I remember the good old days of EQ1 with a mixture of fondness (social aspects, interesting stories, competitive instances, trading old items) and horror (corpse runs, camping mobs for drops, economic implications of items that never degrade...). I was younger with a lot more free time to spend on the extensive overhead that a "quick" EQ session required. One of the greatest appeals of WoW is the same casual approachability that some hardcore gamers hate, but with a wife, career, 2 kids and a house to maintain I prefer the quick fix that WoW provides.

I guess it's what you make of it, WoW has a pretty rich lore, interesting character build options, a fairly involved combat system, etc... I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not at least giving it a shot.

Naw never was made for mac's. I'm from a Apple family throughout the 90's and built my first PC just to play this game so my friend could have his computer back haha.

I have to agree with the most of you that the best times I have ever had in an MMO was in EQ1. Played it for yrs. And took about a yr after I quit just to stop thinking about it. I played on the Tunare and Cazic Thrul servers. Lower Guk holds some of my favorite memories along with Velious. Or buying and selling gear in Eastern Commons for weeks trying to earn enough for that Fungi Tunic. Got to see the 4 Wardens once and thought that was one of the koolest things I have ever acheived in a game.

I have yet to experience a MMO these days thats makes me daydream on what I want to do when I get back on(best way I can think of saying it XD). They appeal to the masses of kids, while EQ1 you had to be 18+ to buy the game and working in a video game store at the time I can say alot of parents denied their kids in playing it. They don't go for adults anymore but to kids with the simple and easy gameplay.

Played WoW for 3 yrs and finally quiting 2 weeks ago, I can say it mounts to nothing in gameplay, creativity, bonding with other characters and your own, economy, and the difficulty in mobs. Quests are easy and repetative which made you never want to read any of them past lvl 5. Groups are useless. Camping items is considered illegal in Blizzards eyes and they ban people for it. Economy sucks.

Why did I play it for so long? Because it had some charactistics that reminded me of EQ1 preZG, AQ, BC and the urge to see all the instance they threw at us and conquor them. Once those came out everything went down hill. Everything and everyone is so detached from each other it makes playing them feel like a job just to get a group and when you get that group, 3 out of 5 don't know their character or whats goin on.

Someone mentioned before Horizons. Great concept and effort in that game, problem was there was no one to back it up and couldn't work with the casual player. I have to say one big thing I have seen different from all MMO's to EQ1 was the GM's. GM's actually came to you to talk to you so you knew they were there and gave you a sence of importance. Also weekly to monthly GM events, even random GM encounters(them as lvl 1 spiders goin around killing all the noobs) which were very interactive and went with the story.

Heh. I re-created a 5box crew in EQ1 a few months back when the monkbug hacks were live and unhindered. I level'd 6 characters to 65 in 2 days with 1200 AA's and tons of open boss raid gear and then left the accounts alone. I may re-activate them someday and go 6 man the anguish orbs for their 2.0's since I was only able to do the 1.5's while the hack was live.

http://www.wegame.com has some great gameplay videos, made me almost want to play around in eq2 again since it seems some people out there remember how to have fun with it.

there's also some great TF2 vids on there. Kind of an interesting way to see some gameplay video before buying a game since these are mostly from the players perspective. Just something I found, probably old news but its nice to go back and watch some of them.
